Ralph Fiennes and Tony Revolori lead a legit bad b*tch cast in this instant classic directed by Wes Anderson. If you like masterfully curated design and cinematography featuring colors and textures that make your insides fizz like soda pop, then you'll love this full movie reaction to The Grand Budapest Hotel.
*excuse the runtime but this movie is so good I practically made a full length commentary 🥴

One thing that strikes me about Mr. Gustave is that just like Zero later in life, he was also "deeply and truly lonely". He had no family, no close friends until Zero came along, and so he hid his loneliness with sex, luxury and vain people, which also explains why he was quick to make Zero his sole heir, to have someone who can carry on his legacy.

This is one of my favorite movies. I first watched it having no idea what I was getting myself into, having no frame of reference for anything Wes Anderson had done, and it blew me away. What Ralph Fiennes did for M. Gustave in this movie is what Meryl Streep did for the character of Miranda Priestly in Devil Wears Prada. Gave 110% and made an already good film THAT much better.

The thing is that every filmmaker, musician, author, whoever, has a distinct style. They may implement that style in different ways, but you can still see it at play no matter what they create. That's why the hatred (by an admittedly select group of "film fans") is so baffling to me.

@@kldawson53 The hate is weird, you have to go out of your way to seek out a Wes Anderson film, His style is not something that has leaked into the mainstream and is replicated everywhere. People have this weird demand that every film produced has to be to their liking and anyone doing something they don't like is some great offence to them.

Wes Anderson was inspired to this movie by Stefan Zweig's literature. That's why these scenaries look like a fairy tale version of a post-Austro-Hungarian country.

post one world 1? When you read Stefan Zweig's suicide note written after ww2 (he'd managed to get out of Austria before the war started) after seeing this movie it does almost feel like you can hear M. Gustav's voice reading it. It's very calm and polite

I think the old women who visit the hotel know he might not really mean it when he says 'I love you' and that he says it to all the other elderly women who come to stay, but they go because of the illusion he creates. He makes them feel attractive so they come to enjoy being in an illusion.

‘Fucking phenomenal’. It really was:) Visually, musically, thematically, humorously, writing-ly, it was all marvelous. Not only as an adjective for great, but as a description of how it made me marvel to think of the breadth of human experience it covered while being-on a very surface level-silly and pithy, on a surface level. It also embodies something that’s so difficult to describe, but that very powerful: the ache, the sting, the sadness of loss-not only of M. Gustave and Agatha, but of the Grand Budapest. And not only their loss, but their loss far enough back in time and in such circumstances that few, save for the book and the Author-will ever even know they existed. And yet, to me, the film somehow portrays these things while also being somehow comforting. Somehow, the story conveys that even though they’re lost, it’s still good that they existed.

bill murray is notoriously hard to get into a film. you have to phone his number, wait for it to go to answering machine, make a pitch and hope he calls back. hence why you rarely see him in anything other than fairly major roles. wes anderson is one exception. no matter what the film or role, he can merely leave a time and a place and bill will be there. he is the only filmmaker who can rely on bill murray to play relatively unimportant side characters. bill murray is just the most notable example of this, basically every big name actor who has ever worked with him is eternally willing to fill any role he wants them to.

I love Wes Anderson. And I don't disagree with Family Guy's description of his movies as: it's like you ate a pot brownie and woke up in a Hallmark card.
