Thanks for this. I noticed it took about 5 seconds to hit 930 mbps on the speed test with Cat5e. On the Cat8 test, it took 3 seconds. While a minor increase, overall on an total network at home it can speed things up.

we bought a router because our factory sky modem struggled anything over 4 wireless connections, i had a cat5e hanging about and didnt think much as i didnt know much about ethernet speeds buti soon found out if i wanted to download through the new wireless router the speed and connection was awful, i bought a cat8 and its as if im using the factory modems wifi, i know multiple wires and general radio interference would of been somthing but since going cat8 even if it is over kill it definately has made a differnce in my downloads and PING, both cables are 5m long so lenght wasnt the bad factor in that respect

I have an on going problem.. I don't know if other people have this problem with BT.. I paid for 300mb download speeds.. I was only getting 70-100mb.. so I upgraded to 900mb speeds now i'm only getting 300-500mb... been on the phone to them multiple times.. had engineers out to visit.. still they tell me there isn't a problem with my line... wondering if i need to upgrade my cables?

@Angry Cupra Those speeds are for wired connections & TechNia is right, what modem you use will have a huge effect. It sounds like you have an older version of modem. I had a similar issue cause ive been with Comcast for a long time & the modem I had was an older version. When I found out I just went5 and purchased an newer modem & decided to no longer rent one from them. You can get a new modem for cheaper than what it cost to rent there's for a year. The set up has become a lot easier as well as far as getting them to recognize your personal modem.

how long were the cables? To measure differences the cable should be over 50 m. Cat is certified for 100 m cable. Bur at home you never have cable length over 30 m. Cat 6 or seven makes no difference at home. CAT8 is total overkill, and to expensive. With Cat7 you are future proof at home. If you have Cat5 or 6 installed recabling makes no sense.

My home is setup for 10gb speeds. Asus GT-11000 pro > TP-LINK TL-SX1008 ( 8 port 10g/5g/2.5g/1g) > D-LInk DMS-106xt (10g uplink, 5-port 2.5gb lan > GT6 Mesh wifi (2.5gb uplink). I have Cat 8 on the important runs to my 10gb switch and everything else is either 2.5gb or 1gb using cat 6a. I have about 15 devices total and then a 10g uplink NAS. My mobo only supports 2.5gb and no room to install a 10g nic. I was saturating my previous network that's why I upgraded to the Asus pro router which has a 2ghz processor and 256MB NAND flash and 1GB DDR4 RAM. Going 10g gives me a lot more head room to grow and this router handles traffic much better than before.

What you need to do is a proper test of CAT6 vs CAT6A. CAT6 is rated for 1GBps and CAT6A is rated for 10GBps both at 100m length. However CAT6 apparently can do 10GBps up to 30 to 50 meters. The real question (and test to do) is whether CAT 6 does indeed offer 10 Gbps up to 30/50m!!!! ….and how does the speed of CAT 6 degrade every 10 meters to 100m (I.e. can you get higher than 1GBps at 100m?). Now That is a proper test to run!!!

You need to understand the ratings system & what the differences are in each rating. Ethernet Category (referred to as Cat) is the specific standard used by manufacturers when constructing Ethernet cable. It defines how a category of cable should perform over a defined maximum distance. 100 feet is nothing & that's why most homes will have 5 or 6 installed but in large buildings you have thousands of feet of cable being ran. The ratings aren't about getting higher speeds over short distances, they are designed to maintain signal strength over longer distances. For me its about cable strength & longevity which is what you get with higher rated cable.
@TheTechNie
@TheTechNie Жыл бұрын
That's right but for most users 100 feet is a good enough length and the speeds tested were in excess of 1 Gbps which is also higher than what most households would have.

@@TheTechNie so if my router is pushing out speeds between 500mps and 700mbps but my plan is 8Gig. Would replacing my cat 6a cable that connects my modem to my router, with a cat 8 cable, would that make my router push out faster speeds?
@TheTechNie
@TheTechNie Ай бұрын
@Joe-lc3sv No it won't. You need a faster router, not a better cable. The cable from the router to the modem is probably not that long so in terms of cost maybe a couple of bucks to upgrade the cable, but you will still be limited by the router's speed. Here is a fast router - amzn.to/4dSgGDV This has 4 1-Gbps ports so you can use wired connection or 5.4 Gbps wifi.
