CAT 980 DPF ash level! Day in the life diesel mechanic! I did it all wrong!

Today, we go over a CAT 980m loader with a code E997 DPF ash level high. Showing the process using cat ET and sending the filters out to be cleaned. This video is for entertainment purposes only! Enjoy 😉

The ash service regen is the engines way of baking the dpf in preparation for the filter cleaning. You still have to pull the filter and have them cleaned. Then after you reinstall the filter and DOC you reset the ash service clock and rerun the ash service regen. This resets the clock on the filter, and resets the “clean filter” pressure so that the computer knows how long to keep the regen going till the filter is considered clean during a normal regeneration. You did it right, but you have to still have the filters blown out. The ash that is getting cleans out is still there.

Seems redundant. Why would they want you prebake it before you send it out to have it baked n blown?

When you do the ash service regeneration you won’t have to have the filter baked. It is a way to do the cleaning out in the field. Cat had a setup that you could bring to the job site to do the blow. Not sure if the tool is still available anymore or not but the ash service regen is still there todo the bake on the machine that way you don’t have to pay for the bake, just the blow.

I like the idea that you ran a regen after installing a new dpf. My only suggestion would be if there is a way to artificially increase the soot amount and then have the operator run the machine as is does a “working regen.” The reason I say this is because I’ve seen the machine complete a service regen w/o issues but when the machine wants to run a regen while it’s working they won’t. Great video! Thanks

nice work again, have you thought about getting a little smoke machine? you could pop it into that doc inlet temp sensor port after putting the filters on and check leaks immediately before it gets too hot

Ash Service Regeneration is like a forced regeneration, it still has to be baked and cleaned cause obviously soot ash doesn't just disappear, I think CAT just has the ASH SERVICE REGENERATION to prepare it for a cleaning.

The code you had was E997 2, you can do the regen and get away by not cleaning it, but CAT gives you three option for the code: The DPF from your machine can be replaced with a new DPF The DPF from your machine can be replaced with a remanufactured DPF The DPF from your machine can be cleaned by your local authorized Cat dealer, or a Caterpillar approved DPF cleaning machine, and reinstalled

I feel like we’re beating a dead horse at this point but I’m also a cat mechanic and the ash service regeneration was made to be used right before you pull the DPF and have it cleaned. You did not screw the customer over. The only way to remove the ash is to physically pull the DPF and have it cleaned. Also I’m assuming your cat ET is an aftermarket Dealer version?
