So I called CatSpot this morning, he said the white flakes are some coconut fiber that got into the machine accidentally and after this batch should not be in there again. And he did confirm what you said, that the clumping agent is still bentonite clay. Thanks so much for passing along your research to help us make informed decisions.

Just a consideration: walnut shells have sharp edges (no matter how finely they're milled). They're notorious in skincare for being too abrasive and irritating to the skin. So I imagine ingestion would be equally so, if not worse. I know you said walnut shell litter is not perfect, but I thought this should be mentioned since you were concerned about ingestion of the other types.

Okocat. I do foster, TNR, rescue. All the cats love it. Pine pellets also, I like some of the ideas below from commenters who use them. I've used the walnut, I like it, but the Okocat and pine pellets are cheaper, which is important for those of us involved in animal rescue. Also, I make sure my cats have choices, including if I'm switching litter. I do this with food and litter, it tells me alot about what each individual prefers and I try to work with that. Thank you for sharing your great ideas, and especially that you've tried them yourself! Good experience.

I use pine pellets in sort of a homemade litterbox. The pellets come in a 40 pound bag which can last me about 6 months, so less plastic is used, and I can recycle the plastic bag. I made two litterboxes so that my cat has one upstairs and downstairs. The litterboxes are two 18 gallon totes stacked one inside the other with a ton of holes put in the bottom of the top tote. I used a soldering iron to make the holes so that the edges of every hole would be smooth. When my cat goes in and pees, the pellets turn to dust, though a pretty heavy dust at first so doesn't plume or anything, and when she starts moving the pellets around after peeing, the saw dust falls through the holes. There are motion detectors at each litterbox so I know when she's gone, so when I get the notification that she's gone (or really when I get a minute which is probably like an hour afterward unless I'm sitting nearby), I just go over and shake the box to make sure any remaining saw dust falls through. All the pellets that aren't sawdust yet are tightly compressed, so she's not breathing anything in. Once a week I dump the sawdust from the bottom container into the non-food compost pile and any time my cat poops I just take it out and flush it. There are special scoops for pine pellets, but I just use a glove. It's just easier and faster for me. The top tote has a lid with a hole cut in it where my cat goes in and out. The top entry "feature" just keeps the dogs from using the litterbox as a snack box.

I was going to check out the World's Best cat litter made from corn, but then I read that it could have pesticides in it--depends on what farmer they get it from, & they supposedly don't know--so it's a crap shoot whether you are getting a bag with or without pesticides. I think pesticides on the litter would be just as bad (if not worse) than the clumping litter we use now. Does the walnut shells stain your carpeting? Thanks.

Hi Jess, I wanted to watch this video again and share the experiences I've had with Naturally Fresh clumping and CatSpot clumping litters. So I've been using CatSpot for a while, even before they had the clumping, and was elated when they came out with the clumping. The non-clumping is very high maintenance to keep the smell down. I searched far and wide to find an affordable, organic, perfume free, soft-on-paws, non-tracking, dust-free, hard clumping, odor controlling litter. You know...perfect. Well, it doesn't exist, but CatSpot was my favorite. It is like $3.00/lb including shipping and it tracks like crazy because it's so fine it sticks to fur. So NOT affordable and NOT non-tracking. But I tried the Naturally Fresh walnut when I heard your report on bentonite clay as the clumping agent🙀. I was very dissatisfied with the clumping performance, the clumps stayed wet and fell apart when scooped. I did read and follow the use directions on the bag. I measured to make sure 3 inches or more. Also, white, fuzzy bacteria or mold was growing on the waste in the can (which got emptied once or twice a week). Maybe I received a bad batch? IDK I did go back to the CatSpot clumping and it looks different and seems to clump even better. There are white ? shavings ? of something in it that weren't in previous formula. I will contact CatSpot and ask what it is. Hopefully something good and they've taken out the clay? I'll give you an update.

I LOVE the tofu cat litter (not sure if that's the same as the soy litter I saw in your photos of litter that didn't work for you). I'm in Canada and buy the Piden brand. It's very absorbent, clumps, is biodegradable, has a nice natural smell, and very little dust and tracking of litter. It's a bit more expensive than some of the clay litters, but because it clumps so quickly, I think I'm saving on the amount of litter that is used. I have tried so many litters (though not walnut) and this is by far the BEST litter I've ever used!! One comment about it being flushable. The tofu does completely dissolve in water. So if you are scooping often (as you are) then you should be able to not clog. If you don't scoop often then you don't want to flush it so it doesn't cause a clog. BUT FIRST, you need to check with your municipality as it may not really be able to be flushed. Where I live they don't want it flushed due to taxoplasmosis. Because it's caused by a parasite, it's not something they want in the water system. I wasn't very concerned about this with this as my cats are indoor only cats so they aren't exposed to this. I really love the idea of it being flushable but found with two cats it just wasn't working for me with the amount I was needing to flush.

@@itsm6433 Yes, it was a pellet, and when they pee on it, the Ammonia or something in their urine, breaks it down to a powder. The litter box was not a "sifting" one. I actually got a new litter box the last year and was an aluminum bottom and the was open top. For a top, it just had a wall that went up a little, and was shorter in the front, to be easier to get in. The side was more of a guard and open top. It was great but a little pricey because of the aluminum.

I used unscented Naturally Fresh litter for years before changing to wood litter because of the red-brown dust on all surfaces. However, both of my cats, particularly one, has developed a wheeze. this past year since our switch to unscented Okocat about three years ago. I've begun to suspect it's caused by the wood dust, w/o knowing, until now, thanks to you, that it's carcinogenic. Between the walnut shell litter and Okocat, my intent was to transition to the wood pellets (no dust issue/minimal tracking) using the highly economical equine pellets from Tractor Supply, but, unfortunately, one of my cats freaked out and refused to set her paws on the pellets a second longer and boycotted the litterbox until back to Naturally Fresh then Okocat original. If I had just the one cat that tolerated the pellets under his paws, I'd still be using the wood equine pellets and see them as the safest, most convenient (no dust/minimal tracking/flushable) and most economical choice over the walnut shell litter. That said, we'll be switching back to the unscented NF litter and tolerate the red-brown dust. One of my cat's nicknames, coined years back when using NF litter, was "Dirty Boots" because his white paws were usually tinged with walnut dust. I appreciate how well-informed you are and for responsibly sharing you helpful knowledge, backed by research, on behalf of our beloved pets and us who want the best life for them. All too often, people publicly recommend unhealthy pet food brands/products irresponsibly

THANK YOU for posting this review. We had been using a “low dust” “scent free” clay litter for several years. The company changed something in the formula and two of our three cats suddenly started having serious respiratory issues. There was no change in the “scent” but when you put your nose close to it it had a chemical “plume” that did not have a smell but stung in the nose and throat. Changed to the walnut litter and the sneezing and coughing stopped immediately. Tracks far less than the clay and is easier to keep up with because you can see it. We have three cats with white paws so there get as a little brown dust on them when they first get out of the box but they can clean it off very quickly. The fur does not stain. I am sure the problem was there with the clay; you just couldn’t see it. I shudder to think of the clay and silica dust they have been ingesting all this time. So happy I bought your book and printables.

It took me about 3-4 months of using an Amazon "City Kitty" toilet trainer on my at the time 4 month old kitten "Miyu." 4 years later I still consider it a great investment. I am able to view each event more clearly as well as observe the excrement in the water. The water removes virtually all scent created, and my complex includes water so "liter" is not a bill I have to factor in anymore. After starting her switch to raw food about a month ago (much thanks to your encouragement Jess), beyond her kitten like energy returning back, I have already noticed things are moving along better. Her urine has also been a lighter color as well which makes me feel better as cat friend. (The biggest challenge for toilet training is differentiating drinking water from toilet water, which logically wouldn't make sense to an animal right away)

Honestly that's a valid point. When I was younger my parents ended up dedicating a couple rooms in the house for our cat Graycie as she got older (the second room was downstairs when she couldn't make her way upstairs by herself). Currently in the bathroom I have a squatty potty that doubles as a step up stool for my sweetie Miyu. As she gets older I would be more than happy to continue to customize our throne as she needs, heck I may get a bidet for my self as well. She already did well with an auto flusher that I ended up removing to keep a better eye on things. Honestly if it wasn't something she hadnt taken to quite well during training I probably would not have kept up on it. And believe me she still has no problem ruining a couch(or bed) when she wants to tell me something she feels is important. What may be cruel is the masochistic level of patience I have. And it isn't natural for humans to use a toilet either but there are certainly significant health benefits to not wading in such environments.

I am planning to switch from the classic clay litter, I already narrowed my choices down to two: Naturally fresh (walnut) and really great cat litter (tofu). I would appreciate some advice!
@marikah6198 Жыл бұрын
I tried only Tofu. Somehow it smelled so yummy like vanilla cookie that my cat didn’t touch it, but it might be just my cat.

I tear up toilet paper or paper towels and into pieces (not that small) and use that as my litter. I change it (all of it) every time cat pees or poops.

Looks like “naturally fresh” makes a pellet version that could work great for sifting

We've actually been using the wood pellet bedding you can get from the Tractor Supply Co. Our cats seem to like it a lot, it doesn't really clump but if you clean regularly and only put down a kind of thin layer, it doesn't stick too much to the bins. Because it's just pressed wood, it is easily compostable. Which is nice. We only have a smell problem because at some point almost all our cats forgot how to actually cover their poo. It doesn't matter what litter we use, they scratch any surface but the litter.

Hi Jess. Thanks for all your helpful content. Using Sustainability Yours made from corn and cassava currently which clumps amazingly. I haven’t tried the brand you are reviewing here, but it sounds like a good one. You are doing great work helping many kitties out there. Grateful to you!

@@jesscaticles What is wrong with the starch litter
@truenaturebc2 жыл бұрын
@@ilovenoodles7483 The problem with starch based cat litters is they are susceptible to aflatoxin mold growth, which is a health risk for both cats and humans.

Cats like sand so anything close like clay is thier preferred choice.Get an unscented one can call it a day. Natural ones are not really natural as they have to processed and packaged, better to get processed sand at thst point.

Hey Jess and Jericho! Loved the video. Can you talk a little bit more about how many inches do you think it is ideal for litter and what are the implications of using a plastic litter box? I’ve noticed you do not use a lot of litter inside the box and also that your box looks like stainless steel. Thank you so much!

Using same litter. I clean my apartment, next day all litter from bathroom near my sleeping area (I live in a small studio).Probably still will use it. Is anyone using Sustainably Yours from Petfive?

I'm thinking, what would cats use in the wild and would that not be an option to use in the litter box?
@joshuaalderson81872 жыл бұрын
i wouldnt recommend that bc the dirt and grass from outside can harbor parasites/illness and bugs. in other words it could get the cat sick and yourself.
@jesscaticles2 жыл бұрын
I agree with Joshua. The most natural cat litter would be sand, dirt, and grass. But I don't know how you would go about finding clean, non pesticide, non chemical, etc. versions of those.

Why can’t regular dirt or sand be used as litter? Isn’t that what feral cats use?

Do NOT use bentonite clay litters. I almost lost a kitten to this clumping litter and now my old cat is suffering because stupid me thought that because she was old it wouldn't hurt her.

@@jesscaticles the one I use is available only in my country. It clumps, biodegradable, flushable, no fragrance or dyes. Hi Jess. I agree, there isn't much out there when looking for the perfect litter. I like Elsey's Respiratory Relief. It clumps, and yes, it's clay, but it doesn't leave dust all over the toilet, floor and counter tops. Stepping on an occasional piece of gravel the mat didn't catch is annoying, but I need to sweep and mop the bathroom floor anyway, so it's a trade off.
@jesscaticles2 жыл бұрын
Just keep in mind it's not just the dust all over the place. It's actually breathing in silica and bentonite nanoparticals. That's the issue.
