I disagree with negative comments below - this version captures the mood of what I would expect what someone would feel if they were singing those words - they are dark, filled with regret, depressed, perhaps hopeless, imprisoned, half dead. I think it is a beautiful version. It gave me goosebumps. Way to go Chan! as usual, beautiful

for all those complaining about the "change of lyrics" - I have a recording of Leadbelly doing this song many years before the Animals, and Cat's lyrics are much closer to Leadbelly's. He claimed he learned this song in prison from a man who said he learned it from a girl who sang it in a whorehouse he had frequented. Legend has it that the lyrics were originally about a girl in a whorehouse called the Rising Sun, and always sung by women. Check out Nina Simone's version.

"Rising Sun Blues" ( The Original Title ) Is an AMERICAN TREASURE!!! It is also A LIVING DOCUMENT. The Spirit of this song is that it is open for ALL to pour their SOUL into it. That is why you will hear many versions of lyrics. To date, every version I have ever heard maintains a few of the original lyrics and The Spirit of the song. With this in mind ........ this version is simply STUNNING!!!!!! The first known recording was by Georgia Turner in 1937 - Produced by Alan Lomax.

I love Cat Power, her voice, her songs but I wonder if this cover was really a necessity. Slowing the tempo, here, sound like a dispensable artifice.

The lyrics were amazing the way they were. She has a great voice, but I really hate this cover of the song.

@@skinnyrichie7881 This was 7 years ago. I completely renig the statement. Coming back and listening to it as an adult, I appreciate the emotion so much and the cover is beautiful. To even have commented what I did in the first place was ignorant of me.

I love Cat Power but this cover is bad. You should not change the lyrics of House of the Rising Sun, they were very good as they were.

House of the Rising Sun is a traditional song. There are countless versions, with variations in both music and lyrics. You have to know what you're talking about, friend.

God!... This has to be THE dreariest cover in musical history!.... Just slowing a good song to an almost standstill, is neither clever nor enjoyable... 4 minutes seemed like 30... ZZZzzzzzzzzzzz
