Cats are super intelligent and naturally caring. One time my ex's toddler squeezed the cat's fur too hard and the cat meowed and gently bit her hand. I was impressed he didn't bite hard enough to draw blood despite being clearly pissed. I then told my ex's daughter to be gentle and doing that hurts him. And she listened! Whenever she was with the cat again she would always show me that she was petting him softly

Nah cats don't know how fast they use their paws. Especially if they use their hind legs. These amazing creatures can jump 2 meters with those hind legs. When I put my hand on my neighbor's cat's belly, she kicks me with her hind legs and it really hurts lol. Why am I petting her belly? Because she sometimes allow me to pet there. if you look at the cat's body language it actually moved its head at the start to allow the baby to pet it, but when the child started flailing the cat either felt uncomfortable or thought they were playing. first it tried to push the baby's arms away but when that didn't work it gave her a few little slaps and left. ears weren't flattened and it wasn't pulled back, so there was no aggression or even defensive signs

It's true! I have a cat who, when giving warning swipes, has her claws out even though she means no harm. It's very natural for them to not even think about the claws most of the time, so if they keep them withdrawn it's a sign of a very conscientious and gentle cat.

Yea cats are a lot smarter than we think they are. The cat most likely knew the baby didn’t mean any harm and it was in fact a young human and so the cat wanted to show the little one to not do that. Either that or the cat was just extremely friendly and wanted the baby to stop

Maybe the kid did cry, maybe not, but I absolutely agree with you: this is good parenting. He didn't have an overly emotional reaction or worse, acted dismissively towards what happened, but immediately began soothing the baby. She or he can react the way they felt like reacting without having the parent influencing their emotions, yet being there to comfort them all the same. That's perfect for their development.

i love when cats do those "stop it, naughty baby" baps without using their claws. definitely a thing they specifically do with kittens. my cat used to do that at my puppy occasionally too. then one day she swiped at a neighborhood dog and the poor dog had a big red claw mark across his face. they can go full force so easily and they choose not to (tho of course it's no guarantee they won't scratch next time, so i'm not advising trusting them near a baby's face per say.) i just admire when cats are totally pissed off yet still so intentional and careful to not hurt the baby. just giving a firm parental no. it's really sweet tbh

Cats inherently understand social interaction and how serious they are, they also recognize the babies of their but other species too and find them annoyance but not a threat. Cat won't hurt stuff unless threatened or seriously annoyed, same like my dog won't viciously bite me when I'm bathing and cutting his hair but friendly warning bites "hey! knock it off!" rather than "you die now!"
