@@rrrrcccc7155 I think sometimes it's traumatic just being in a shelter for some animals. The constant influx of other animals' scents and sounds can overwhelm some cats and dogs to the point that they just shut down. He definitely lost a home he was happy in. I've seen this happen with cats whose owners pass away. Many of these cats will stop eating and hide away. They clearly feel immense grief. They do much better when they have an animal friend or can be fostered by someone who can give them lots of attention.

When a cat is profoundly depressed in this way but understands love in a home, they’ve usually had a loving home and somehow lost it. When they’re terrified, that’s usually a sign of abuse. In both cases, this foster mom knew what was needed: love and patience ❤️

This broke my heart as Jovi's behaviour reminded me of my Katy. My friend had been approached by Katy several times in his front garden. She had obviously been abandoned during a snowy period, as well as abused. I agreed to take her in as I was already offering end of life care to several animals, and, to be honest I felt that she would probably only last hours. I had to give her a shower, she was so dirty that the first water flowing off her was black. She obviously loved being warm, and after drying she took herself to my bed, curled on a blanket close to the radiator and slept for the next 48 hours. She didn't even wake when I went to bed. To my surprise she got stronger, but she too hid her face just like Jovi. When I took her to the vet, there was evidence that she had been kicked repeatedly, including her head. The vet was, unfortunately, correct that she had brain damage, and she suffered major mood swings, during one of which I was so badly bitten I needed hospital treatment. I've had her 3 years now. She is gorgeous, sometimes loving, often moody, but then she is a cat after all. She is in charge of the house, and, no matter how much he tries, my Toby is still totally controlled by her, just as I am.

@@ajrwilde14 that would be ideal but not realistic. Cats or dogs are fostered because they have suffered trauma and need a special kind of owner to get them to trust human again. It’s a huge task that not any owner is capable of. And you run the risk of the new owner not knowing what to do and “return” the pet. Fostering is a special task that can be done by a special type of people. That’s how I see it anyway.

The shelters I have volunteered with aren't terrible, but they're definitely very scary for some animals. If an animal has never been with other animals before, suddenly being with many is more than they can handle! The shelter where I volunteer has the cats separated from the dogs, so they can't hear the barking, but of course not all shelters have enough space and money to do that. I would say the good shelters are less like a prison, and more like a college dorm where you have to share rooms. No one wants to live in a dorm forever, even though for most people, it's not so bad for a while. But for some people, maybe if you've had bad trauma before, or have really high anxiety, it's incredibly stressful, and not a good place for you.
@kahssie
@kahssie 2 жыл бұрын
This feels like a problem that stems outside of the shelter, iirc its a behaviour of cats that have been abandoned/were left behind after their carers passed. It's depression and grief a lot of the times, or on the other end theres also sadly abuse. Just happy to see this lil guy doing well now
@njones420
@njones420 2 жыл бұрын
I know they are there for good reasons, and the people who work their love the animals, but I agree, my cat was traumatised after spending just 1 day at a kennel, and has had anxiety issues ever since, any odd noise scares him now. He was a very confident/happy cat before then The constant noise for other dogs and cats (they're really loud places), the hundreds of confusing smells. I suspect many cats would be like this after any extended time in one. Pushing your face into the blanket at least cuts down the sense of smell and sight... :(

Can I just say? We see the miracle of Fostering. If he stayed at the shelter he would have been against that wall forever, I can garuntee that. And he would have probably been euthanized. I hate it, but that's the reality of the situation. But because this amazing woman decided to take him in, foster him, show him love, and then allow him to find a home... this is why we need more foster homes.

This is so cute! 😍😍 This reminds me that last year I remember one day I was talking with my mom in the kitchen suddenly a cat came and sat near the window. After weeks, we would feed that cat everyday it turned out that, that cat was a mommy and I named her pussycat. Today she with her 2 kittens (9 months old) come to our house everyday and they even let me pet them they would just come up to my lap and purr peacefully they are just too cute also I became friends with them because of patience and love. This proves that animals are very more loyal than humans they are just adorable!! 😭😭😍💙✌✌🙏🙏 Love from india 💖💖
