Really appreciated the honesty, integrity and intelligence from mr. Fretz. I subscribed knowing I’m a non sailer but with a real curiosity and desire to sail (shore cruising) for minor cruising in my retirement. I will not be in the budget arena mentioned, but a 20-30 foot trailerable multi is so far in my sight. I’ll occasionally visit this sight for the little jewels imparted.

Talk about generalization. Best boat, is one that suits your wants and needs. Personally I would want a performance cat and less volume for less junk. A performance cat like an Outremer has many advantages of being stronger and faster, especially in light winds, so less motoring.

Gary knows his market I've heard his comments on other channels. Nice of him to share. Nikki and Jason on Gone w/wynns did just about what he said to do , bought a leopard, in summer,owner version never chartered! They still spent a ton on upgrades and prepping for Long we liveaboard. Gary pointed out that basically you will not get the " old" advantages of a multi hull with one of these cruising caravan type. They won't be giving you fast passages or be much good when you have to pound to windward for a couple of days. You will probably spend more time motoring than you really should. But the room will suck you in. So if your not looking for a real sailing experience and just a cruising experience they will be great and the level platform will be really nice in the long run! warp21drive I have no interest in a cat. The only car I have ever owned is a Mini Cooper. It seems too much like a McMansion or SUV to me, but I know lots of folks are interested in Cats. I also like our current boat and want to continue Sailing west in it.

whats the difference between a charter and owner version...usually its the hours on engine and one hull is for the owner, the other hull has 2 duouble beds...that conversion can be easily made with any charter cat - given you dont have two left hands...

Not so easy, the owners version usually has a much expanded en-suite bath located in either bow or stern that’s as nice as any luxury condo.

There are also differences in how they are built. Charter boats have glued in bulk heads where as owner version boats are glassed in.

Ferulloscoasting ! Probably cuz it was originally an Australian build and relatively new to the US market compared to the three big production cats he mentioned - there’s just not near as many Seawinds in the US as in Aus

Eric - when you find out - let me know. I know that Privilege is a "luxury" cat -- but they also seem to be devoted to interior space hacks, and I'm interested in where the budget verses luxury blend meets!

Leopard may produce the best built of the big three production builders, but the big three in no way account for the best built catamarans.They may produce the best aesthetics depending on what a buyer is looking for. But these three mass producers do not have a single model among them that makes the top ten list of best built catamarans. Gary seems to brush off all other producers in four words. "There are other producers". And I'm sure he makes 90 percent of his commissions selling from the big three's fleet. What he sells are not the best built.

Michy Nature. Michy, I have studied cats for a few years, but still consider my opinion to be at an a mature level. If my memory serves me I recall Sunreef being a custom producer of large cats in Poland. I’ve never been on a Sunreef boat, but my impression is that they build high end, luxury cats that would be wonderful to sail on or live on. They are certainly out of my range price wise. I think I’d prefer a smaller boat that could be single handed in the mid-forty foot range. For me a smaller boat gives me a more acute connection to the environment around me. In motorcycle terms, Harleys are for show and BMW’s are for go. I’m more concerned with feeling a connection to the road than being seen in it.

Lagoons...good boats...but they fall apart...how special. No thanks...will stick with my rock solid mono-hull with solid woods and materials that will still be around decades from now. The acceptance of "IKEA" boats is sad testimony to the level to which crap has become acceptable. However, his practical business savvy is well noted.
