Thanks, Brittany. One of the most informative videos I've seen! One of the more difficult things I had to do this winter and spring was to determine how to handle the 30+ Catasetum tenebrosum seedlings that I took from a community pot in the fall. Darn little psuedobulbs are less than a half inch! I ended up keeping them misted but not watered. (They did go dormant.) Thanks to you I now feel much more comfortable about the watering practices of this growing portion of my collection.

Hi Brittany, I purchased my first catasetum alliances this summer. Upon receipt, I repotted them in sphagnum moss, they all were leafed out and had the three inch root growth. The problem is, I believe they have stopped growing. I've had them now for at least a month and they seemed to have stalled. None of the pseudobulbs are wrinkled, black/yellow, or soft, but the new growths just don't seem to be doing much. I grow them indoors in an East/South window and keep them moist. Most of their new growths are less than 6" tall (including leaf). Some are near blooming size, and one is supposed to be blooming size, but they all seem pretty small to me. Only the pseudobulb on my Monn. Witchcraft is fat (about 1" diameter and 3" tall). I guess I just expected them to be larger. I must admit, my backbulbs are really small, so honestly, my new-growths will probably exceed the backbulb size. I have some of the KZbin populars, namely the Cyn Wine Delight, Pink Bartiorum, and the Monn. Witchcraft.

I know my question is late, but related to this topic. But my questions, my catasetum leaf was growing but the white spotted, too much light or not enough lights? And some pseudo bulbs was soft. I guess I over water it. This video of your I watched it lots of time. To educate me to help myself. Just the leaf it bothers me.

just bought a cycnodes hybrid (Jumbo puff) mostly thanks to your videos. Quick question (and I apologize if you are repeating yourself) but when I water the orchid in its sphagnum moss, do I keep the moss constantly damp or let it dry out a bit? Thanks!
@HolyCityOrchids9 жыл бұрын
***** You keep the moss consistently moist when the orchid is in active growth. Letting it dry a bit is ok, but these orchids come from places that have a distinct wet and dry season so don't let it go too long without water or you could have some stunted growths. Congrats on your new baby! They are such rewarding plants to grow!

Hi Britney please could you advise me, I was given a Catasetum by a friend who asked me if I could rescue it. The Catasetum has some rot right at the bottom where the roots are. Some rot has spread to the higher area about one centimetre. Is there anything that can be done to save this poor plant? If I cut the bottom bit off with the rot ( but I have to cut all the roots as well) would it have any chance of survival? Please can you kindly help best regards Natalia

If one leaves a catasetum in potting material, should it be set in a lower light setting during the dormancy period? I ask this because I noticed in one of your other videos that you Un pot them, cut their roots and keep them in the dark like tulips. If you don’t do that approach do you reduce light? Thx, Tom

OK here's a question - put extra holes in the pots OK I did,I did,etc oops what about PH rags? I think its pots should not have extra holes is: its wants to be wet! espec they are in a saucer? your thoughts

Hi. I'm in India in a place called Bangalore where the temperature hovers around 17 to 32 degree Celsius. It's late spring time here all the seasonal winter plants are at the time of ending their lifecycle.I had ordered online a catasetum Cycnodes Wine Delight (Highly Fragrant)and it came was all with yellow leaves from the old one to the newest one. It has a big pseudobulb from which the latest offshoot was there and from where it has come is definitely smaller than the pseudo bulb. I'm afraid was I given a catasetum with some bacteria or it is the normal hibernation thing.
@kalefiend15489 жыл бұрын
why dont you want to moisten the roots, are they that delicate?, will it halt the plants growth? will it kill the plant?
@HolyCityOrchids9 жыл бұрын
kale fiend Are you asking why I won't moisten the roots when they are coming out of dormancy? I don't like to get any water near the roots when the plants are coming out of dormancy. It lessens the risk for bulb rot, as the older roots are not able to properly absorb the water. It is the new roots from the new growths that absorb most of the water.
@1jsolano9 жыл бұрын
Hi Brittany, my cycnodes has a pseudobulb tha's leafing out but still has no roots. Can I keep the sphag misted or still wait? The greenhouse where I bought it told me I should keep it moist at this point since its out of dormancy but I also wanted to get your thoughts because its got leafs but no roots.
@HolyCityOrchids9 жыл бұрын
Jorge Solano Hey Jorge! I know this is a late reply, but maybe still relevant. Keep it completely dry until roots form. Even if the new growth is a foot tall, it still needs roots to absorb the water. Otherwise, the bulb will rot. If you watch my video on knowing when to water Ctsm it should walk you through :D

Hi, I just posted a detailed question on your facebook site (with photo) and the whole post has vanished. I really need advice on what to do with my Mon. Mill. Magic Witchcraft Catasetum: all blooms have fallen off, the leaves are still green but the original root ball has been potted in very wet sphagnum moss. I do not know whether to repot or what to do to let the plant go into dormancy. Could you advise me please?
@andreasoilander54079 жыл бұрын
These are interesting orchids, and maybe at some point I would like to try my luck with them. Do their winter rest has to be cold, besides dry? I understood from your videos that you keep them completely dry in the winter. I've read a Finnish article that advised to give them some water during the winter if the bulbs start shriveling too much, but that sounded a little odd. Wouldn't the water cause it to grow too early? Is it a problem if the bulbs shrivel? How much is it safe to let them shrivel? What would you do if it looked like it's drying up too much? ps: I almost choked on my tea with the ice cream truck thing! It was so funny! I had to watch it again! :))
@HolyCityOrchids9 жыл бұрын
Andrea Soilander They do require cooler temps in order to go dormant, but it isn't cold in the sense that most people think. In their native habitat they receive winter night temps in the 50sF. If you have a garage that doesn't freeze over the winter you could even keep them there. I do not advise watering at all during their dormancy period. Bulb shriveling is pretty normal for this species, but they recover in the Spring and Summer. Really though they shouldn't be shriveling a whole, whole lot unless it is just that bulbs end of life. Bulbs get old and die, which is totally normal. If the bulb looks like it is shriveling too much for its own good you can mist around the rim of the pot to give it some added humidity. Hope this helps answer a few questions :D Now I'm craving ice cream lol
