Күн бұрын

In this video we feature venison, black walnuts, pine nuts, maple candy, apples, chokecherries, acorn four, bear fat, leaks, blueberries, and mushrooms. From there we could add game that was currently in season including waterfowl such as ducks and goose as well as grouse.

before i thought hunting was cruel and your videos changed my mind! i realized that we have to control the population of animals and its also for food and families and survivals. its a circle of life . now i find hunting interesting and you have amazing educational knowledge thanks to your video for changing my whole view on hunting!

Much respect for the firearms handling. At first I questioned why he didn't have one in the chamber when he stood to shoot that duck. Clearly I'm not a duck hunter (yet), I quickly realized it makes a lot more sense to keep the chamber clear when your dickin' around in a canoe. A lesson I will remember forever!
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 7 жыл бұрын
I'm learning too! With a bow, things are simple, but when you have two guys in a canoe you have to be a little more careful. I was hesitant to even shoot in the boat but we found a nice spot where we could keep the bottom nn the ground and not worry too much about spilling over. Takes a little bit of trust between two people as well to make sure you're not standing up and messing around.

Highly informative and entertaining. I enjoyed the quips and jokes. Back in the day, when I hunted waterfowl, I can recall being skunked and coming back empty handed many times. Sometimes I think ducks have a sixth sense. That's the nature of the hunt. Looking forward to future exploits.

Thanks Fred! I think they figured us out near the end. At first we just sat in the open in the canoe and they were still coming in.

I have been checking into this kinda stuff for my little trip. I have discovered that nearly every tribe on the continent used to plant crops, even the nomadic tribes. The would plant as they moved and move through and harvest. Several had huge gardening operations that they worked at different villages.
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 7 жыл бұрын
Wes S I believe that. We're the same people as them and you and I would easily come up with ways to get food easier and more reliably than just hunting and gathering. Farming, domesticated animals and so on. it's fun to try to play primitive man, but there are real limits to how easy it can be. Maybe you'll bring some planted crops along with you?

This is the thing, nothing I grew last year is left. I would be starving to death if I did not have access to a grocery store, just like most of the population.
@WesS2016
@WesS2016 7 жыл бұрын
The foods we take for granted, red beans, potatoes, tomatoes, squash, corn, Bananas, just to name a few are all crops grown by the peoples of pre-European Americas. And most people can't grow these foods at all let alone in quantities high enough to support their own caloric requirements. I agree completely with your hypothesis that Alone is just about who can starve the slowest. Two on starvation medical within just a couple of days of each other. And the winner was just days away from being pulled himself.

Here is a paper on land management practices. Years ago I worked for the local National Wildlife Refuge, they did cuttings for woodcock to encourage their habitat. Along with that we did prescribed burns. We also, as I have mentioned a few times, keep blueberry fields pruned with fire. So, along with agriculture keeping the landscape in a fresh state and not just a grown forest will yield new plants and encourage game. In part timber cutting can open up a stand of timber and the raspberries and black berries that shoot up are amazing. Once again, we are restricted from performing such free burns as a land management practice. There are ways to encourage a more bountiful harvest, but it is lapsed and we rely on the imported grocery stores with imported fruits like avocados and bananas. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2826204

Yes they do forage for food, and do things like fish, but then they just go back and huddle under a Walmart tarp, and do things like sleep, and talk to themselves for as long as they can take it! Watching the show is like watching paint dry! That's why I refer to these shows as "Un-Reality" shows, as what moron, save for someone like Robinson Crusoe, or Tom Hanks and Wilson, who were cut off from the world, and stranded on Islands, would just hunker down under a tarp in the wilderness for the rest of his life??? Any normal, or should I say intelligent person that could walk would try to make his way back to civilization. The winners of these contests also become "Un-Celebrities," (since the show is is Un-Reality, and basically just plain dopey and stupid), who cash in on their new found celebrity status by suddenly becoming designers of ultra expensive knives, and by making appearances, and posing for photos and videos at events like Blade Show and Shot Show. You are not missing anything by giving up your TV, at least not in the case of Alone!

Hi ya WB! Correct me if I’m wrong, by watching Jeremy pull out the guts...they all come out together, no more guts left n cavity other than heart, lung and liver? I’ve heard headaches can cause one to up chuck, I can shoot but I’ve never hunted, I’d like to try and get a duck by way of being in the water the way Indians did, but I bet it’s against the law, but hey, if shtf, I’ve got that knowledge under my belt. Well done my friends! I enjoy your videos for many reasons, not the least for your honesty. Our ancestors were tough people! Could you perhaps build caches in your hunting area? One thought I had was that rendered fat keeps better and just needs to be kept cool vs. cold. I live in my hunting area so storage isn't an issue for me. BTW, the last few episodes of Alone really drove home your point about starvation contest/body fat.
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 7 жыл бұрын
They sure did and it looks like the show can't ignore that reality anymore. I wonder what they'll do for Season 4. I think you're right about food caches. I was reading about Natives and corn and they would slash/burn, plant and then return months later for harvest. They certainly didn't just go hand to mouth and hunt and gather...they used agriculture too!
@hillbillynick2000
@hillbillynick2000 7 жыл бұрын
The Wooded Beardsman Yes, yes they did! The colonists didn't recognize it when they landed but North America was one huge farm forest. Lovingly tended for generations. Almost moves me to tears thinking about how the First People would have felt seeing it destroyed for field crops. Look into feral gardening. There is a book by that name (written by a Canadian!) that is a primer on it. Also some ethnobotany books about various tribes that I plan to pick up when I can. Caches are very important, you can not tell season to season what is going to happen to different foods.

do you feel you could produce enough food off this trip without using the food storage that you took with you or was it not enough diversity to sustain you
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 7 жыл бұрын
Tough question. I think we came out roughly even on this trip and even a little heavy, but that's only because we really did bring a lot of food in with us. Could we live off just what we got there? That's the real question. We could have gotten more cranberries, but they were starting to go, and likely some cattail root to get the carbohydrates, then those ducks and grouse for the fat and protein and we could have fished as well for pike. I'd say it would be cutting it pretty close.

Easiest way to collect enough calories to exist would be work minimum wage flipping burgers for a couple of hours and buy a sack of rice or flour. Trouble is quality of life not finding enough calories so live in your camp eat ducks and fish washed down with rice and then paddle back every now and then to flip burgers long enough to buy the shells for the shottie and a sack of rice problem solved.

They'll cure it by drying it. You can sundry or cold smoke - which is air drying but using the smoke for flavour and preservatives and to keep the flies off. Once it's fully dry, it can last months to years.

Q: How do you gauge the 'quality' of roadkill... Would the absence of flies be a good starting point..? 😳 😬

Smell and texture are your best clues, that and environmental conditions. If it's summer, forget it as you'd need to have seen it get hit. But in the fall, you get the benefit of cool nights. If the meat is squishy and falls apart easily, it's no good. Meat should be firm and have no odor. If you cook it and it smells bad, it probably is.

The burden of life is to kill. Unfortunately we all either do it ourselves, or someone does it for us. Coming to terms with this can be difficult since quite a bit of our food comes to us pre-processed.

Even around here there seems to be more to eat around than up North! Odd, but true. Yeah, I have family there and grew up in North Bay, so to me, it's always home.

I think that comes back to what you said about people settling where the land is of great abundance. It almost seems that where the physical land gets rougher the less you can scavenge, But 15 min out of town everything is available

ok but there again is the difference between survival and self reliance survival is a short term situation and is simply a matter of getting by. Self Reliance is long-term our ancestors were self reliant big difference not to say they didn't have times where just surviving didn't come into play. furthermore time spent in nature is always a good investment the return is what it does for one's soul no necessarily what of or or how much you get to collect along the way. sometimes it's just something to start a fire. then there's days where you will feast like a king can't have one without the other it's just how the game is played. that's why knowing when and where and being able to store those resources in time of little instead of much is important. And having the ability to have the mind set to be able to roll without is key must be able to let go of the day to day modern society mind set i.e the mundane when playing mother nature's game.

Well said! It all boils down to what you want out of "the game." And that's different for everyone. The issue is when people say they are doing one thing, but are actually doing the opposite. Like actually doing survival and call it thriving. Busts my chops.

I've never left a youtube comment before, but here it goes. I'm a little bit confused about what your channel is trying to portray. I love the show, but there are so many shots where you are eating things like pasta, or using calories from outside of the wild, so what is your goal? Are you trying to show people how to survive in the wild? If so, you're not actually completing your goal. Are you just trying to show yourself surviving in the wild with outside sources? If so, then you are not tapping a huge audience that you would be able to gather by actually surviving purely in the wild. Also, you guys are dedicated to working in the Canadian wilds. I suggest that (if your funding is conducive) that you work in other environments. For example. I live in California, USA, and many of the skills that you are obtaining are useful here in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. I strongly suggest that (again if funding is adequate) you come out to California, and go out in the wild here, and show people an environment other than the Canadian north, and show them how to survive. It will involve a whole different bit of knowledge, but I'd be happy to show you the differences. Anyway, thanks for the show, and I hope I'll hear from you. I won't spend much time actually using youtube as a communication channel though, as I've never done it before.

The whole channel is about the outdoors, mostly about eating wild foods with a strong emphasis on wilderness living (still food focused). In season 1 of our challenge we learned that it was almost impossible to get enough food from wild places, in Season 2 we pushed the limits and did better. Essentially we've come to a place where we use some meal replacements to get by. It's still an idea...to eat wild foods for an extended period of time, but we are working toward it.
