In this episode we show you how to harvest and cook an escaped/exotic pea hen (pea fowl/pea cock) which is legal in Texas since it is considered an domesticated animal. We cook the giant bird in a dutch oven using a dry pluck technique to preserve all the nutrients and fat in the skin. We pair this up with some left over cat meat from stew as well as mullberries we collect ripe from trees near our camp.
Unlike Naked and Afraid, ALONE, or Survivorman, there is no limit to the tools we are allowed to use. Living off just WILD foods is harder than you think!
In this episode we set live traps for nuisance and fur bearing mammals which are legal in Texas including possum, raccoon, rabbit, skunk, armadillo, feral hogs, javelina, badger, fox, porcupine, bobcat, coyote, gopher, ring tailed cat, soft shelled turtle, red eared slider, rattle snake, water snake.
We hunt FERAL hog too!
We fish for catfish, alligator gar, long nose gar and drum, crawfish, crawdads, or yabbies, ghost shrimp, bluegill, rio grande perch, armored catfish, flathead catfish, blue catfish, alligator, freshwater clams, leopard Frog.
All wild foods are on the menu!
We seek out wild edibles including prickly pear cactus pads or nopal, cactus fruit or tuna, wild onions, mulberries, wild grape, Texas persimmons, pecan and anacua, mulberry, tasajillo, turks cap, yucca pods, cats briar, oion, chili pequin, duck weed, ground cherries, desert hackberry.

I know your joking, but we do have peacocks that roam freely around the San Francisco Zoo. And I know they'd be very upset being compared to the common turkey after spending all that time foraging for dropped french fries around the cafeteria, preening their feathers while blocking the view to the penguin exhibit and constantly yelling at an ear-splitting volume. Very upset indeed.

When the Spanish came to Mexico they found the domesticated turkey which the Aztecs called guajolote. The Spanish, mistaking it for a Peacock called it Pavo. Both names remain, but a live turkey is called guajolote and cooked turkey is called Pavo - as in Pavo con mole. When Peacocks were brought to Mexico the Spanish had to rename them Pavo Real. “The Real Peacock.”

I love peacocks, but I am a big believer of hunting invasive species, ethical hunting all the way! Great job guys, I’ve never thought about eating a peacock, but I’m sure it would be tasty! 👍
@lambot3g

my understanding is that essentially all bird species are edible. Obviously quail tastes better than gull, but boiled it's all safe
@TheOzflyer
@TheOzflyer 6 жыл бұрын
lambot3g yeah, that makes sense. As a hunter myself, I stick to the common deer, pig, goat, duck...,ect, which are the most invasive in my area (Australia), and the occasional kangaroo ends up on my plate, they are native of course, but with the high numbers of them, our government issues permits to control population. I’ve seen KZbin videos of people hunting and eating fox, and I have a feeling these guys in this video, may have eaten fox, that’s just too close to dog for me, even though it would be safe to eat, I can’t get by the psychological barrier.

The way I was told to cook this bird is: Get a cedar Plank nail the bird to the board, douse the bird with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and chili powder. Throw the whole thing in a dutch oven cook for 4 hours over medium flame. Take it off the flame and let it rest for 30 mins. Now throw throw the bird away and eat the board.
