Expectations were very low for this one. Must have been a combination of seeing all those jars of pickled herring floating in the supermarket isles for years and the smell of herring rotting in the sun.

You wanna try herring at its best, Elias?? Smoke them! No, not like that. The cigarette papers keeps tearing ;) Smoke them in a proper smoker with real wood chips. Depending how you do them, you will have either Kippers or Bloaters. KZbin have plenty of videos on it. Anyway, once smoked they last really well and taste amazing, even cold. Kipper meat, cream cheese, a little dill and puff pastry, mmmmm! Edit: I dont understand why fried food wouldn't be good for a person. Sure, you swim the food in loads of fat and it will be bad. even more so if you're eating that way a couple or more times per week. But I fry my meat with barely any oil (try coconut oil with fish!), just enough to lube the pan.

Yo man, next year. I was checking all those methods out after I did this sort of try out. The whole cultural staple of these fish makes total sense to me more than ever.

man those sabiki rigs almost feel like cheating though, when you're out on the ocean 20 miles from shore and you run out of bait, nothing beats just dipping a rig into the water and watching baitfish just gravitate towards the thing :^)

Pickled Herring is absolutely amazing! I eat it on bread with a dab of mayo on top. (Sild = Herring) Here in Norway we (I, some people) have a "sildebord" herring-serving, consisting av various types of pickled Herring. The one you made, with different types of spices, some with tomato sauce, it even comes with sour cream sauce! Freaking delicious! You can try googling: Julesild, tomatsild, rømmesild, kryddersild and hit it with some google-translate ;) The one you made would be called "sursild". An other option for this fine fish is to cure them, with salt, matybe som esugar and smoke them (cold smoke), fatty, smokey, boney and absolutely awesome ;)

Aloha Elias, I think this is one of my favorite catch n cook episodes from you. I like seeing underutilized fish being put to good use. We don't have live herring here in Hawai'i so the only place I can get herring is either frozen whole at a local market or pickled from Costco. I LOVE the pickled herring from Costco. I have actually grilled the thawed frozen herring eaten with just a little shoyu. I don't mind the bones. Local sushi shops serve a pickled herring called iwashi (ee-wah-she) which is one of my favorites. I would like to see you try your pickling recipe on mackerel. I LOVE pickled mackerel too. Keep up the great work!

Trust me I would love to be able to catch some Herring and go striper fishing. Don't get me wrong the herring have come back pretty decent this year but not like it used to be matter fact my friend and I just picked up the Fisherman's Digest and it's still closed and the game warden we talk to said it's going to be close for the foreseeable future because they don't have someone assigned to specifically study the herring

Eating sardines, herring, mackerel all my life, pickled; in tomato sauce; in mustard; smoked; in water; in vinegar; probably every possible way other than raw. And I'm from a landlocked country with no access to ocean. Astonishingly there are people, who taste these things, whether they are eatable, while entire nations and countries would be laughing or shaking their head in disbelief, since its their main source of food.

As a kid my family used to net smelt (another bait fish) in Lake Erie, in the early spring. Those fried herring looked like large smelts, which always fried up crisp and tasty. They looked delicious. Hope you didn't get botulism poisoning with the pickled fish. We'll find out shortly, I guess....

I like watching your channel. The last and first time I caught a fish was when I was like 10. The epic battle took like 30 minutes and it was a 5 cm gudgeon :D. I recommend cutting pickled herring and marinading it in soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, some spicy mustard and sugar for a few days ;) Edit: Oh, yours is already cut so just marinade after pickling ;).

I loved pickled herring. Made my first in 1970 along with pickled sunfish. Commercial pickled herring is way salty. remembering fishing tidewater and tidal Croton River in April. We use to snag them with treble hooks. In the early 70's I used my fly rod and a white winged buck tail. I recall we cooked them on the camp fire of oven until they flaked. Have to tried cutting and frying up suckers the way Isaack Walton recommends . Delish in early spring or October.

Great video. Always enjoy watching your video. Elias. I'm New to Herring fishing in NYC. Just a little confuse. Is catching herring actually illegal in NYC? Because I was checking the limit per day/person. Then found out there is NO possession for Herring. However, I see many catching buckets load of them. Is that means we can get summon for catching them??? Any comment is appreciated. Thanks.

Hello from Sweden the land of the Herring. Well, kinda. Its very common here anyway. Having it pickled around easter, midsummer and christmas is a tradition, served with just boiled potatos, chives and some sour cream. There is a number of ways to pickle it. Onion pickling being among the most common, similar to what you did. Tho mustard pickled herring and another variant where its pickled with tomato is also common. In the summer you can find it smoked and fried as well. Personally im not a huge fan of pickled herring. Prefer the other methods. I wonder if there is a recipe for a swedish "Sillamacka" its a pretty simple sandwich anyway. Google it and you can probably figure out a way to do it just from the pictures.

herring you fry like this= 2 butterfly fillets together, skins outside and inbetween either fresh chopped dill or strong mustard. not as much oil as you used and fry well. serve with boiled potato and a cold light beer. when i fry them i gotta beat people back from the pan so they would not eat directly from the pan. you can also salt them, especially the females w eggs in them are delicious.
