Here in South Africa we call them Elf also, shad are caught anywhere where there is salt water even in estuaries. Lots of times they are in the foaming water, we use alot of floatation for the bait as they tend to feed higher up in the water column when they are deeper, they can be very fussy at times only eating a sardine belly or a whole sardine, sometimes we have to reel in the whole sardine as if it where a lure for them to bite, we also fish 2 hooks on a 3 way swivel cause when they are on the bite we can catch upto 2 at a time. South Africa has a daily limit of 4 Shad per day.

Great video mate. We do a run to Fraser Island each year chasing tailer, always excellent fun. Eating wise 3 out of 5 . We bleed immediately and , cryovac to take home to the family, as long as you don't wash the fillet it will freeze fine. I lost on in the freezer for 18 months and it came out perfect. landshark outdoors of Florida did a fantastic catch and cook on “blue fish” and showed that for these type of fish, just as you said, eat ‘em fresh if possible. But his method was to bleed by slitting the gills and ice them immediately so that they don’t start to go mushy as fast as they might otherwise.

how cool. glad this came up in my recommended, even though i’m a novice and still learning on lighter tackle (7ft medium action rod, 20 lb or 8kg line); i didn’t know anybody would use salmon as bait! that blows my mind. Ok, so as a novice, my initial thought was why would anybody waste delicious salmon as bait?! Haha then again, where I’m at, my location, salmon is more expensive and considered a higher delicacy. I then realize that other places in the world like yall’s location maybe has so many salmon that you can just catch one yourself and use it for bait. How cool!

Hi Paul, 40g each of brown sugar and salt per 1 litre of water to make the brine. Soak fillets in brine in the fridge overnight, remove from brine and allow to dry in the fridge for another day then smoke for approx 1 hour. Keep your eye on the fish when smoking, you don't want to dry it out.

As a perpetual novice and land fisherman this couldn't be more apt for me right now, having just added an 8ft Uglystik to my artillery, specifically to target in-shore Herring/Salmon/Tailor. Good advice. Being in South Australia I may never catch one. I got bitten off by something off a jetty over sand that in the 20 seconds of me seeing the flash and hook up it was gone. It wasn't a kingfish, or a trevally. Next time, I will be armed with gang hooks or a short wire trace eheheh.

I'm curious about having the hook point coming out the flesh side of the slab bait. I was always taught have the hook protruding out the skin side it makes it tougher for the bait to come off

Excellent info there.. Covers anythg a person need to know about the Tailor. In Turkei (İstanbul) we call it "Lüfer", aka king of Bosphorus. It is a beautiful and elegant fish. The way it fights when he is caught is uniquely different just as you described, shaking his head consistently in order to get the hook out of his mouth is a level of intelligence isnt it?. They say the bluefish caught in our waters taste the best compared to other regions of the world. Probably because of sea temperature or saltyness level. It is a highly expensive fish here, we catch it by trolling using needlefish as bait.

Hi Barca, In Australia you can buy them already ganged. If you are not in Aust, you could buy some online or gang your own. Use 4/0 hooks, you can open the eye of the hook with pliers, put the next hook through, and then close the eye again, and so on :)

I recently discovered your channel. I’ve been enjoying your videos. I’m recently retired and getting back into my fishing. I notice you use Alvey reels sometimes. Perhaps you could do a tutorial on Alvey? Not to promote them, more on technique and differences from spinning reels. I have been bothered by tangles around the reel, and wind blowing off the reel when it’s windy. I often feel the Alvey needs a proper ring guide closer to the reel (not just that metal curl thing). Hi Neil, You can do a dry cure by making a mix of 30g salt and 30g brown sugar per kilogram of fish. Mix this together and rub it over the fillets. You can add some spices of your liking as well. Cure for 24hrs in the fridge, rinse off and pat dry. Allow to dry for several hours on a rack in a cool place and then smoke. Time depends on the thickness of the fillets.

Mate, they freeze perfectly. They retain ALL their moisture and succulence. The trick is to spike them, bleed them immediately and pat them dry. Freeze them and then cook them whilst frozen. I've been a tailor fisherman for 40 years and that's all it takes to eat perfect tailor for months after their season. Yes, they smoke perfectly too, even from frozen, just brine them frozen for 6 hours and bung them in the smoker for 25 minutes.
