I do a lot of sea fishing.And I still say Rod's channel is the best Angling channel on You Tube.Relaxed and informative.

Hi Mick. Excellent video. Doesn't look like a smooth hound venue but, clearly, it is. The only problem with smooth hound fishing is the oftentimes long wait for / in between bites. Lure fishing beats the boredom at times like this and the weight of the extra gear is worthwhile (so long as the walk from the car to the venue isn't too long and / or arduous!). The rig making session was really helpful...thanks. Stay healthy. Cheers. Ken

Many thanks again Ken - yes it can be a long wait for bites, but if you know the smooth hounds are there, then its odds on that at least one will take an interest - just have to be confident of catching. It helps if you've caught a few before and know when they are likely to feed at a particular venue. Southampton Water is a bit underrated for hounds.

What an absolutely brilliant video. So well put together. Great insight into what you are doing, locations, tactics, tips for bait and tackle. Wonderful how you adapted to what you saw around you, which lead to a wonderful story with the schoolies and ultimately the smooth hound. I’m in land locked West Yorkshire and am very envious of new and old anglers in your area that can look at these videos as a reference guide to locations and conditions. Absolutely first class. Finally a word of recognition for the camera man or woman, who tirelessly follows you and journals your expeditions, thank you. 👍🏻

Nice to see you fish a local spot for me,where I have fished too. Those smoothhounds are excellent sport and vary in size a lot. Brilliant rig tutorial, very interesting as normal. Thanks.👍

A good venue - my next vid out is from Ensign way adjacent to here. Small smooth hound caught at the end of November! Looking forward to the end of spring again, when I'll be back in this area after smooth hounds.

Dam!! You caught a bass on a lure. I went up by the rocks as far as the no fishing sign for sunrise then down to the BP jetty. Blanked using 2 SG panic preys, a toby & a SG seeker. Then caught my first lure bass at leep (the same size as the seeker)

A lot of Southampton Water looks suitable for lure fishing - I've got all the gear for it, but rarely give it a go. Well done on your catch - have caught at Lepe myself fishing lures.

Good session that Mick👍 Looking forward to the next one, didn't think there was access near Proctor & Gamble. Had a few hours at Grays Wharf today, one small Sole 😎 and was lucky to get that! the crabs were really out in force😞

Thanks Chris - access via St.Clement's Walk. Well done - at least you got one - it seems more difficult than usual for this time of year.

Nice Video! Very local to me and I fished Ensign Way on the 4th and had some great Smoothound's. I've always had better luck with fairly large ragworm baits on 3/0 hooks for the smoothies along that stretch. Admittedly you have to fish your way through the crabs but ragworm has got me more results than crabs. Thank you.

Right on - but I'm grateful to catch one in daylight Andy! Not as keen on night fishing as I used to be. Would love to beach a decent tope. Thanks for watching again.

Excellent video and fish , do you find the size of the tide makes a difference in Southampton water ?
@rodsangleuk6283

Not really, but I tend to fish neap tides. Locals may have a better idea and record of catches over time. Thanks for watching James.

Just a bit surprised you fished there for smooth hounds, I guess you would be better to go to Selsey or Park Shore (Calshot) or Lepe, these locations are not far from where you were. Also I guess it is better to fish at night for bigger ones.

Yes I agree - however I now much prefer to fish in daylight and this venue has not let me down yet when it comes to catching smooth hounds.

Well done again sir :-) Despite being on the other side of the world now in NZ, I really enjoy your videos which remind me of the places I used to fish while I lived in the UK. I love the way you think too :-) We have "Smoothounds" here in NZ, they are known as Rig and our season on the South Island east coast is October to Christmas. A couple of comments for your consideration: 1) I don't like the pulley drop down rig for the reasons Dean Booker explains in his video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIbSYXR3Zdllf5Y. In a sideways tide, the snood doesn't stay out behind the weight. My favourite Smoothound set ups are either the up and over rig made with the Gemini Pulley clip (see: www.planetseafishing.com/how-to-tie-the-up-and-over-rig/), or a Bagnall bar - both of these cast as well as the pulley drop down rig and keep the crab right on the bottom. Come October here, I never tire of waiting for one of my rods to buckle over with the first 'Hound' of the season :-)

Thanks a lot Ian. Interesting comments about pulley droppers - I've yet to use a Bagnall bar, but its on the to do list for plaice fishing. I tend to use up-and-over rigs for ray fishing, but over the years have caught more on pulley rigs and pulley droppers.
