Catch Me If You Can: Fake check
What’s happening in this Catch me if you can clip?
Frank Abagnale Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio) is trying with very little success to use his checks in different banks. When he sees how airlines pilots are treated, he decides to pretend to be one as well. In order to know more about the job, he goes to Pam Airlines, acts as if he was writing an article and asks about being a pilot.

What’s Catch me if you can about?
Based on a true story, this classic movie directed by Steven Spielberg, tells the tale of Frank Abagnale Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio), a young man who successfully managed by the age of 21 to con millions of dollars by pretending to be a Pan American World Airways pilot, a Georgia doctor, and a Louisiana parish prosecutor. Tracked for years by obsessed FBI Agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks), the young mastermind was able to slip through his fingers multiple times, enjoying himself in the process. The con artist's foremost crime was check fraud which he carried out so expertly that by the end of the movie he gets recruited by the FBI to help them with check forgery cases.

I was the guy who put text examples of problems into my TI-83 calculator and reviewed them under the guise of using the calculator for said problems. ;) But it turns out that later in life, after barely graduating from high school and working a variety of trades that I did skillfully...I have something called autonomic dysfunction/POTS and likely had it in school. I was too exhausted to grasp the work properly and cheated as needed to get by. It worsened and put me on Disability at 39, unfortunately.

Nah realistically the dude got pinched constantly. He spent a good portion of his life behind bars or on probation. The difference is this was back in the 70s/80s when you could quite literally fail upwards in America. The sex, drugs, and rock and roll generation quite literally doomed America to the path its on now. Good luck out there and I hope you stay on the straight and narrow with good connections to already established people. Otherwise enjoy the breaking wheel.

@@DJ-sn2wn Which was done BECAUSE of the rampant drug use in America during that period. That whole policy quite literally started in the 70's. Look at the good its done instead of pot/coke now its fent/meth and a dependency on psychological pharmaceuticals... a million times worse. Add that with the repeated market collapses and bail outs, sprinkle in JFK/MLK, radicalized fem!nists, 9/11, the patriot act surveillance state. Volia a complete departure from traditional America. Usually it takes a few generations for corruption to take hold of a well financed global power. The Boomers speed ran it in a few decades.

@@mrocean8139 I believe it. The pod tracks down people that knew him back in the day. Multiple people that spent time with Frank in his early 20s. The story in the movie and books is a mix of exaggerations and inventions. For example, his booker (aka business partner who got him speaking engagements) was present when Frank heard someone else tell the story of the prostitute who accepted a bad check in exchange for both services and cash. "We both got screwed that night". That was a joke someone else told, and then Frank incorporated it into his bit. It was never an original Frank story. The booker was on tour with Frank when they both heard someone else tell it, and then, viola, its part of Franks speech at the next gig. The pod is full of stuff like that.

People here dont understand that the reason he got away with cons before is because there's no advance technology at that time. And con artists are not common. I've once read a 1985 Sidney Sheldon novel about a female con " if tomorrow comes" this is brilliant novel as well. If you read the novel this year you may have a lot of criticism because of course the story is outdated

Trust was basically everything people had to go on mostly at the time. Sure there was some technology and training to avoid false cheques, basic scams and robbery, but the end of the day the entire cheque system relied apon genuine signatures, something that is far too easy to emulate and copy and face to face dialog with is open to social engineering.

Except that story is a complete fabrication. There's a whole book about how Abagnale's greatest con was convincing everyone that he was this brilliant conman. The truth is that he did impersonate a pilot a few times and forged some checks; most of the other stuff in the movie or what he tells in speeches is complete fantasy. He obviously does have talent but its mostly based on charisma and tall tales.

Back then in the sixties seventies it was that good even through to the ninties it was good and those with old contracts still have a good life, all the new kids suffer though. I mean there were less planes, less flights and flying was a luxury. Now it is often cheaper to fly than to go by train.
