Very informative. Thank you. 2 quick questions: - do you use wire with the Nomad lip lure? - I’ve seen commercial fishermen jig for kings - what type of jig do you think this is?

You think it’s possible to ever catch these off the beach? I do a lot of beach fishing and didn’t know if they ever cruised the beach during certain times of year?
@OBriantFishing6 ай бұрын
Highly unlikely, but it’s possible when they push the bait on the beach during heavy winds. They are definitely on the beach, I always catch them within a mile of the beach this time of year

In Texas they're caught off piers and jetties all the time
@OBriantFishing5 ай бұрын
@@joelambert6816 yes, just not in Florida. They catch them off of some of our piers here, but not right off the beach.

Had about 20 break offs yesterday fishing king in 60’ with live bait 50 braid / 80 leader. Are they able to slice the leader when they roll, using dorsal?

It's possible, were you using wire?
@SethDunbar123 Жыл бұрын
No - 80 mono. Realizing that if I hook on the left side for instance he could slice across his teeth. My buddy swears 80 is enough and was frustrated we’ve didn’t boat the fish.

Anything but wire tends to be difficult with those fish. If you do stick with mono, at least fish long shank hooks to keep the line away from their teeth as much as possible@@SethDunbar123

How do you rig up a smoker choker with a live bait?
@uncommonsense93956 ай бұрын
If I'm slow trolling live bait and my bait doesn't want to go down and I don't have down riggers is it OK to add some lead to the line kind of like a bottom rig to keep the bait at a lower level or is it better to use planers? I don't even know if planers work at 1-2 knots.
@tailwateroutfitters6 ай бұрын
Yea absolutely lead is great. I'm not a big fan of planers. A great option would be a trolling lead. They're long, skinny and have swivels on both sides.

@tailwateroutfitters Жыл бұрын
200lb is overkill. 30lb or 40lb is plenty

all the reasons you gave for star drag are easier and more consistent to do on a lever drag, its so hard to to tell where you are setting the drag on star after you have moved it. the soft tip of a kingfish specific rod keeps the trebles in the fishes mouth, youre not worried about breaking, youre worried about the hooks coming out of their soft mouths.
