Brown Trout and Brook Trout are two of our favorite fish to target so we decided to go to a creek that has both! This stream has wild brown trout, native brook trout, and some stocked brook trout and we catch at least one of each in a morning of fishing. My brother even caught his new PERSONAL BEST Native brook trout. Fly fishing for trout is always a roller coaster and this day was no different. I almost called this video "Streamer Fishing Episode 8" but decided it was such a good video it deserved to stand on its own. I truly hope you guys enjoy the video!

just came across yall's channel. It's awesome how much you pay attention to the ethics of trout fishing - don't keep 'em out of the water for too long, handle them gently, etc. Thanks for setting a great standard.

Wow, nice video guys. Nothing better than a beautiful day on a beautiful creek catching fish like that. I'm 57 and I guess living vicariously thru you guys, oh the memories. Cherish them. I too think that brookie was a native, I personally believe a lot of people underestimate the possibilities of what hold over stocked fish can do. One other note: I've found that when fishing creeks like that, that wearing camouflage long sleeves and hats really does help even when working upstream. Tight lines guys.

Yeah luckily the flows were pretty good that day so the fish weren't too spooky. But I'm glad you like the videos! I know that day will live on in my memory for a very very long time. Not just because of the fishing but behind the scenes we had an unbelievable amount of fun. Thanks for watching!

I lost two fish yesterday, got one up to the waters edge and as I went to net the fish, it got off. However, I am counting that as a catch! Three on, two of good size and another strike that missed. A fun day all and all.

Great video as always guys ! Love seeing those monsters in our smallest native nets. Proof they can handle bigger fish than they are designed for. That creek is one we have spent many hours and miles on! You guys were very blessed that day. Many have fished that creek for years and never have seen a brown like that. Also those are for sure wild brook trout from the New England strain, not Appalachian native strain. Some think it could be a hybrid between the two. Again great job and keep it up !
@hardmanfishing

We definitely enjoy using the native net! And we knew there was something going on with the brookies in that stream. I could tell that they weren't all native strain but I'm not necessarily an expert on that creek so I don't know the history or if the other species are reproducing. I'd rather be lucky than good! Thanks for watching

I find it so cool that your streams out there share Browns and Brookies. Wild Brookies are wonderful. No natives in Colorado, only Cutthroat are native. But many Brookie lakes and streams have not been stocked for decades. All natural reproduction. My PB Brookie was slightly over 17 inches at a lake at 10,300 feet. Completely wild fish.
@hardmanfishing
@hardmanfishing 4 жыл бұрын
I plan on returning the Colorado to try to catch some native cutthroats! But yeah the natives out east are the brookies for us. The browns were all stocked at some point and now reproduce on their own much like your brookies. It makes for some interesting fishing. Glad you liked the video!

Can you discuss what food source is available in the creek to support such large browns?
@hardmanfishing

Well honestly that brown probably fed mostly on other fish. Whether that be minnows and chubs or the native brook trout, I'm sure he doesn't discriminate. Once the browns hit around 18 inches they usually feed almost exclusively on other fish.

Hi there again. I’m amazed at the abundance/size of fish in such a small stream. Is this a catch and release only stretch of water? Or are u in a very remote, hard to get to reach area( of WV)? Thanks again. Great vid’s!
@hardmanfishing
@hardmanfishing 4 жыл бұрын
Nope this is not a catch and release section and it isn't (necessarily) hard to get to. I would call it slightly overlooked. Having said that we were following foot prints when I caught that fish and we saw two guys starting to fish it on the way out. I attribute most of our success to watching weather patterns and knowing that higher pressured bodies of water have to be fished at different times.

Where in this stream would the wild trout spawn? It looks heavily silted.
@hardmanfishing
@hardmanfishing 4 жыл бұрын
It is silted in some areas but for the most part it has some good gravel. A majority of the headwaters of this creek are on national park land so it is somewhat safe from heavier sediment load from mining or other activities. I have personally never been in the fall to see if I can find redds or anything like that because it is a pretty far drive from me.

How do you tell the difference between native and being stocked but then turns wild,🤔I’m confused
@hardmanfishing
@hardmanfishing 4 жыл бұрын
It all has to do with noticing differences between certain strains (subs species) of trout. In WV there are two strains of brook trout. The native Appalachian strain and the New England strain. A trained eye can tell the difference between the two and if a brook trout is the New England strain then it IS NOT NATIVE. Therefore it was either stocked by a truck, or (in some cases) stocked fish mix in with the native population and reproduce. Once fish start reproducing they are considered “wild” fish because they did not grow up in a farm. So that is how we jumped from native, to stocked, to wild fish. Different strains, fish condition, and multitude of other factors come into making the decision. Hope this helps! And thanks for watching

The PB was towards the end. It was the 11 inch native. The brookie at the beginning was planted at some point but we don't count that one.
