Fishing for Murray Crayfish. It was a nice day to be in the boat with Trent Freer, and we caught quite a few crays over the day, but the biggest Murray cray we caught, just amazed me not only with the size, but with the speed it could snap its big white claws shut, and with a bit of coaching I got it on camera. I also got to keep all my fingers too, which is always a good thing.
I love catching Murray River Crayfish, with their big claws and all the spikes and armor, they look prehistoric.
We released all the crays that we caught, and there were Murray cray nets pulled in that did not contain any crayfish, I edited these out.
We were fishing for Freshwater Crayfish, (Murray River Crayfish), scientific name: Euastacus armatus, and sometimes called Spiny Crayfish. They are the second-largest freshwater crayfish in the world, the largest freshwater crayfish in the world are also in Australia, down south in Tasmania.
The mate I was with is Trent Freer, who also has a KZbin channel, his channel is all about fishing in Australia, and he has caught some amazing fish. The link to his channel is below.
Link / @trentfreersfishing
You can only catch Murray Crayfish in the Murray Crayfish season in the allowed areas of designated rivers. I am not going to put season dates on here as they may change over time. There are the minimum and a maximum size limit, and also limits as to how many you can catch and also possession limits.
Hope you enjoyed the video.

These crayfish tell their friends about being abducted by strange aliens onboard a ship and being probed and analyzed before being released. Of course their friends don't believe them.

I live in Arizona and we catch the same size crayfish in the canals down stream from the Palo-Verdi Nuclear Power Plant. We fish for them at night because they glow in the dark. The meat kind of makes your gums bleed and your hair fall out but they taste pretty good. Well, I'm off to my chemo-therapy treatments. Happy fishing mates.

DimmuMaule Thanks for making me laugh! I was watching a nature show one time about a river over there in kangaroo land, where these adventures set up camp one late afternoon 20 or 30 yards from shore when in the middle of the night some unlucky buzzard woke up to a Crock dragging him into the river by his leg! He survived, Christ can you imagine! I guess some empty beer or soda cans sure would of been handy just to string em together so you could hear the sumbitch coming! Good thing to know, sleep tight!

@@dodgyhodgie734 Yeah, that'd be why I said "matter of TIME." & yes, someone will eventually sneak a bunch of these across the pond. It is, as I said, a matter of time. It'll likely start in a body of water or river naturally low in predators specific to crayfish, & snowball out from there. 20 years is a pittance in the overall picture.

Australian Murray River crayfish (Fresh Water) are the second largest fresh water crayfish (fresh water lobster) known to man. Gavin Clark Anytime. You are blessed with such fantastic Ocean Lobster size, fresh water crayfish. Please keep doing what you all do to protect insure future generations of the Murray Crayfish. BTW, can you legally keep females without visible eggs? How do the crayfish taste?
@GavinClarkdiy
@GavinClarkdiy 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can keep them if they don't have eggs, but there is a strict cray season and you need to be inside these dates, They also state which rivers and where you can fish for cray, there are minimum and a maximum size limit, and also limits as to how many you can catch and also possession limits. Now you ask what do they taste like? Well for the size of them they don't have a lot of meat, but it's sweet meat and has a taste of its own.

I think they take so long to get big that it becomes not worth it to farm them. Farming is all about having a high output:input ratio, and these bad boys just don't add up. They're great for catching them in the wild, where mother nature raises them for 18 to 60 years, but not great for farming.

I live in Tasmania; we have the largest species of freshwater crayfish in the world. The Tasmanian freshwater crayfish live to around 70 years old and can measure up to 40 inches (1 metre) long stretched out and weigh upwards of 6 kilograms (13 pounds). They eat mostly rotting wood and leaves and invertebrates. The Tasmanian freshwater crayfish is the largest species in the world and the Murray River crayfish comes in at number two. Both species are rare and protected.

Here we call them crawdaddies. Just fyi, release females with eggs right away. Stressing them tio much can cause them to release them and/or eat them. The eggs also dry out pretty fast which kills them. Wasn't sure if you knew. Great video. ☺

Hey mate! I just watched a NatGeo show about the Cassowarie bird. I'm so coming to the land down under! in a short segment they talked about feral pigs. The first time ever I've seen that. I also had zero knowledge pertaining to Australia having a rain forest. I thought most of your land was like Arizona, where I live.

Gavin Clark I used to go visit my mom in Texas as a kid and we would just tie a chunk of bacon on a string and the greedy crayfish or "crawl dads" as we called them would not let go until they were on land,but... The biggest ones there were not as big as the smaller ones you guys caught in the video. So, do you guys eat them and if so are they similar to lobster? Thanks, great video
@GavinClarkdiy
@GavinClarkdiy 6 жыл бұрын
HaHa When I was a kid we used to catch yabbies (similar to your crawdads) with soap on a string with the same result. Yes, we eat the Murray crays, it's sweet meat and has a taste of its own.
