Ohio River Action:Fishing for Blue catfish around mussel beds

This was video was shot on the Cannelton pool just 20 miles down river from the McAlpine dam in Louisville KY.
monsterrodholders.com/ I was using frozen skip jack cut in small pieces. i was fishing in about 35 foot of water on the deep water flats using both a suspended and dragging methods. Catching catfish on both type of rigs.
In the summer months on rivers such as the Ohio river the deep flats provide a great food source that blue cats love. That food source is mussels.
Find a good mussel bed on the deep water flats and you will not have to go nowhere else the rest of the day as the cats of all sizes will roam these flats in good numbers scavenging through the gravel/sand/mud mixed bottom for these small hard shell morsels.
The bluecats will eat these mussels, absorb their flesh and later either regurgitate or evacuate the shells. It’s not uncommon to have loads of zebra mussel shells that the cats have left me in my live tank after a tournament.

I am 51 yrs old in my younger days I had a nice bass boat and went to the lake or chattahoochee river I chased catfish and hybrid bass every day I had off work but I married and had kids and that took up all my free time 3 yrs ago I was in a bad wreck that messed up my leg and shoulder several implants in my shoulder and back my kids are grown and I am on disability but watching you catch those fish had put the bug back in me to get back fishing again thank you for your video today

I have to say Steve, one of the things that really gets my adrenaline pumping when I'm out on the water, is when a trophy cat makes my rod tip dance and splash on the lake's surface. I've only had one cat that had these kind of biceps on him. Lol. Steve you are such a lucky guy. To be able to have the knowledge you do and the success that you have is awesome. I would give anything for just one fishing trip with ya. As far as mussels go, do cats target these in rivers as a food source? The New River where I live in Pulaski, VA has a lot of these mussels in it. Is there any techniques to finding where the largest abundance of these mussels would be in a body of water? Anyways great video Steve. Whether your catching bait like skipjack and mooneye, fishing for daytime flatheads, pulling a controlled drift for blues, or just a catfish tip video, I love them all. When I was just 9, Daddy let me enter the local park pond fishing tournament for kids. We couldn't find any worms in the garden bed, so Mom I gave me three biscuits from a can. I didn't catch a big fish; however, I caught many of them that day. None were big enough to keep. Then last year for my 66th birthday, I went fishing with a friend. I had a five pack of biscuits in the fridge. I caught a 4.78 pound cat on my first drop cast off the pier. The gentleman who took me fishing only caught a 2 pounder on his bait choice!

Best eating cat fish are about 24 inches long. Once they get to big they get a stronger tasting. they are still good to eat though but from my personal experience for channel cat is 24 to 30 is best. Plenty of fillet and wonder full mild taste. I never eat blues, i release them. not knocking it but they were extremely rare in the Ohio for years. I grew up fishing this river in south east Ohio and when I was kid you couldn't catch much of any thing but cat fish and carp because nothing else could survive in it. It's much beter now and we need to keep regulations in place to preserve our natural resources. It's a sad day when you can't feed your self off of a great river if you desire to.

Don't matter what size .... I always soak all my fillet in sink water and ice it down 24hr before fish fry .. change water every 6 ... on last change add a bottle of lemon juice to water . Rinse again ....enjoy ... bon appetite !

Nice catch! I be catching them same big blue catfish fishing from the bank at night using a big glob of rotten chicken guts. I cast my line roughly about 20 to 30 feet away from the bank. I also use shrimp for bait, they too work extremely well for catching big blue catfish.
