*JUST FYI* The colloquial name “sand flea” describes a creature that isn’t an insect at all but is a crustacean in the family Talitridae that lives in sandy areas under rocks and vegetation debris and causes no harm to humans or pets. In some areas, they are called beach fleas or sand hoppers instead of sand fleas. Sand fleas that live around beaches are tiny crustaceans that are typically about ¼ inch long. Their coloration varies from gray, brown or tan, much like the color of the sand they populate. Sand fleas possess several pairs of legs, and relatively long, thick antennae. Also, sand fleas have two forked appendages that protrude from the back of their body. Sand fleas are not dangerous but often are thought to be since many people confuse sand fleas with biting gnats and biting midges in coastal areas. The bites from these gnats and midges leave welts on the skin. Sand fleas are predators of small marine animals, but they do not bite humans or pets.

Although these are commonly called sand fleas, they are also known as mole crabs. These are filter feeders that don't bite. The sand fleas that do bite and carry parasitic diseases are a different species (tunga penetrans) that bore holes in your feet to lay eggs. They are very small and hard to see. Typically found in the tropical regions of Coastal South America but sometimes as far north as Florida.

Once at Nags Head I dug some of those crustaceans up and my sister and I told our other sister that they were sand fleas capable of bringing down a large dog or a small horse and for her to remember to shake her shoes out before wearing them. We forgot to tell her It was a joke and when she got home her farrier came to shoe her horses (like a month later) and she asked if he had ever dealt with injuries to ponies caused by sand fleas lol. He asked her if she thought her sisters were joshing her. On the same trip and after eating at The Outback, we told her that anything with astricks beside it was kangaroo meat lol. Also, through maybe the late-'90s, anytime a storm churned-up the aurf, the beach would be littered with surf clams; free for the taking. I don't see those clams anymore after a storm.

I just learned why people catch sand fleas. Chat GPT says: The "sand flea rake" you mentioned is a tool used by some individuals, particularly fishermen or bait collectors, to harvest sand fleas for various purposes. Sand fleas, in this context, refer to small crustaceans commonly used as bait in fishing. Fishermen often use sand fleas as live bait to attract fish like pompano, whiting, drum, and others. These tiny crustaceans are attractive to certain fish species, making them valuable for fishing enthusiasts seeking specific catches. Sand fleas are used because they are readily available in coastal areas and can be an effective bait for attracting fish in saltwater environments. The rake helps gather these creatures from the sandy shores where they typically reside, buried in the sand close to the waterline. Collecting them in large quantities with a rake allows fishermen to have a sufficient supply of live bait for their fishing expeditions. While most people might try to avoid sand fleas due to their tendency to cause discomfort through biting and irritation, fishermen and bait collectors see them as valuable for their fishing activities, hence the use of tools like a sand flea rake to gather them in quantity.

Not only for fishing! They are delicious 🤤. You only need to clean up, and boil it in water with vinager and salt. Them you can eat them with drops of lemon. You also can fry these little guys!

They're really quite harmless and some people think they're cute. They resemble little crabs more than they resemble fleas. Can't bite or pinch you either. Many of us have childhood memories of playing with and making sandcastles for them

Those aren't actually sand fleas, they're sand crabs and totally harmless. There are however "sand fleas" that will bite, but they typically congregate around rotting piles of seaweed and the like.
