Colorado Day 6 - The continued hunt for Rare Trout!
Cutthroat trout were the first trout species recorded by Europeans in North America. They are now divided into over a dozen sub species, most of which occupy less than 10% of their original range. The greenback cutthroat is not only one of the rarest subspecies of cutthroat, but also one of the rarest trout in the world. Recently Colorado made headlines when they recorded their first ever wildly reproducing pure strain greenback cutthroat trout. Which leads me to this video… Although the fish in this lake and it’s adjoining creek were once touted as being greenback cutthroat, these fish are actually not pure strain greenbacks and likely a hybrid of some sort. So I’ll let you be the judge… how much weight do you put in pure strain native fish? And how much does that effect where and how you fish?
I ended up catching a bunch of trout out of a tiny creek. The creek was full of a hybrid greenback cutthroat trout which was a blast to catch. The fly rod I used was a Renegade Black Series Combo in an 8'4" 3 wt. Most of the fish came off of a size 22 gnat. Any other questions just ask!

It sounds like you’ve been doing some productive research into the pretty complex history of the greenback - well done! I think the more anglers can know about the challenges and intricacies of conserving rare species the better. These fish need our concern and our help. That little stream was a jewel … but I couldn’t help thinking how fun it would be to use an ultralight tenkara rod there! Many thanks for this episode - your videos keep getting better and better!

You were making some awesome call shots. I would've loved to see that species back in the day, but certainly glad you did. The cutthroat jumping out of the water for a dragonfly was very cool and something many will never see. See you next time and thanks for the content.

Great technique at 1:55. Presumably a very light tippet to float a fly down perfectly on water that still and clear.

Love the small streams! I'm surprised the bow and arrow cast was so accurate with the wind. I usually land the flyline on the ground and let 2 or 3 feet of 7x carry the fly into the water. I had a great day once by landing the fly in the overhanging grass or bushes. When a fish came up to look at it i twitched it into the water. Lots of em jumped up a foot or more to grab it.

Super cool man, that creek was crazy. The lake fishing reminded me of how fishing for Lahontan’s went for me last year, they were just cruising along the shores and eager for dries.

Love the greenbacks! I caught one many years ago in a lake up the hill from loveland. A ranger came by and asked if i caught one. I said yes and threw him back. The ranger was happy. Big Tiger Muskie in lake too. Chomping on trout

Fishing native and wild waters is a big deciding factor for me. There is something about the purity of catching a fish in an area where the population has always lived. Fishing stocked and non native and wild water just doesn’t give me as much satisfaction

Yep you're spot on. Brook trout are technically a char, therefore cutthroat were the first trout discovered.
