Since your pulling the tank anyway, it's a good time to move it back and add another battery box. An 18 spd will be way nicer for you too.

Yea, move the tank back and put in another battery box under the door. The truck will look uniform that way.

I like a deep headache rack with a box built in it for storage. Side boxes are nice but if you run off road they are easy to get torn up. Also have to be acreful to not forget you had the one open on the passenger side and drive off with the door down! Yeah it has happened. lol

My 4 year old watched the video with me this morning. I think you have another fan! LEDs are good and are here to stay. No warm-up time. Bulbs that last practically forever. And they're pretty cheap nowdays. I'd say go for it, but it's still going to cost something, even with the power company covering some of it. Thanks for the video! Oh, you should spray some flex-seal on that timing cover! Guy on the commercial says it'll work on anything lol!

Hi Jeff, Buyers makes some really well built step box tool boxes as well as under body tool boxes. I've used both on a water truck we set up several years ago. The under body was used for the pump box behind the drivers side fuel tank.The step box on other side was a good option as we did the same thing you are thinking about, moving the fuel tank back behind the cab instead of under. The step box tool box wasn't as long as the fuel tank (28 in) but it served it's purpose we needed it to. Moving that tank back gave us a bit more leeway, less weight on the front axle from moving it to in front of the drives.In 4 years the rubber seal on the pump box was changed once due in most part to being opened and closed 40 times a day.Other than that they've been bullet proof for what they're used for. Can't complain about them they are water proof with the seal system they got. Also being aluminum the chloride from the road treat they use here in Alberta hasn't rotted them out. Great videos you supply us with thank you for what you do to keep us entertained. It's much appreciated. Jay Thomson Foremost Alberta

Jeff, You may look into a product called LPS3. It a rust preventer that you can spray on. It sprays on like oil but dries like a wax. It has worked real well for me on my salt truck and lasts years. If you do get some, avoid the aerosol cans because they clog...just buy it by the gallon and spray it out of a squirt bottle. For your lights, you can just buy LED bulbs (T5) and they are direct wire (no ballast needed) You just take the ballast out and wire 120v direct to the tombstones. I think the last one I converted cost about $35-40 for the LED bulbs and is brighter. Cheap and easy. Good videos!

sounds like the kenworth is getting some really nice upgrades and some maintenance. 10 spd to 18 spd...nice upgrade for all the heavy hauling your do. i like it when both fuel tanks are under the cab. i would probably do the opposite....i would move the driver side tank forward and move the actual battery box back. then add a stainless steel tool box behind the passenger side fuel tank. great video jeff.
@danielsprowl19987 жыл бұрын
It looks like Kenny II getting some TLC with those upgrades. I also would move the right fuel tank to the back since you have to take it out to put in the 18 speed transmission. Nice build on the frame rails. Like I said before. The liquid sodium crap they treat the roads with now is basically "metal termites" to vehicles. It just chew's everything up underneath. Hope you feel better. Santa gave me a good old case of the flu for Christmas this year instead of coal. Love the Pittsburgh Power hat. Be safe out there in the wild west. And have a Happy New Year.

I'd vote for moving the tank back to match the drivers side but if you went with a box and left the tank under the door, the top opening box is the way to go. You can put so much more in one and stuff isn't falling out every time you open it. I've had one on my truck for three years without an issue with leaks unless I leave it open. Got a cheap tool box and bolted it in to hold my tools and everything else goes in around that. There is even room for my electric grease gun... That outhouse just went international... I thought it was just me but you noticed how much difference a little eye liner can make.....

Jeff i bought a transmission jack best investment ever. Them 18 speeds are so heavy and the jack makes changing a clutch or transmission so much easier. Blaylock turbo are awesome have ran them for 20+ years no troubles at all just a major increase in power.
@metaagyel6207 жыл бұрын
Nice videos Jeff, I enjoy watching them. Fuel tank forward helps take weight of your drivers and puts weight on your steer axle. Also having them forward keeps them out of harms way of a tire blowout or a broken snow chain. If you don’t need both tanks, shed the drivers side tank. The Step style tool boxes and the sloped top boxes that mount in the center of your cab guard stay the driest.

Hey there Jeff! Thank you for the reply on the lowboy ramps, yours look exactly like what I'm gong to build! Thank you for the explanation too, clarifies a lot of my questions. I feel like a celebrity actuall being named in your video, haha! As for the box issue, one of my freightliners has a peterbilt hinge faced step box that I mounted under the right hand door. It works nicely, but is limited on space. I use a nice aluminum top lid hopper style box which is mounted crosswise on my headache frame, it works great as you can open the lid and easily find things inside of it and keep it organized easily. I realize you don't run a headache rack so one of those "highway products" top loading hopper boxes mounted behind your fuel tank might be a good option. Your videos are great! Happy new year!

I've pulled a number of tranny's out of trucks, my preferred set up now is to start with the steer tires up on 6-8" blocks. Gives more room to move around under there and work with a jack. I remember working at a freightshaker stealership when Eaton/spicer had a clutch recall...I don't know how many I changed, but I would be given a work order, go find the truck, pull it in, and have the flywheel tagged at the parts counter for resurfacing in 45 minutes. It would take me about an hour and 15 minutes for reassembly and adjust. Flat rate was like 10-12 hours, good times. Good luck on not having to pull the front cover for the leak. As for the tanks, I like symmetry. Love the vids man!

Jeff symmetrical tanks & step boxes are the way to go. However if I had to choose between the tranny jack & a tool box,.... the jack would win hands down. Her in the northeast we have been protecting our frames from salt & calcium with a product called “Fluid Film”. I believe it’s more durable than LPS3. Finally I put LED’s in my shop, Way better. Start great in the cold, much brighter, & I put fewer replacement units in. Keep the vids coming! Best part of my weekend!

I would opt for the fuel tank staying put, and puttung either a top or side loading box behind. Anything with any weight is hard to take in and out of those step boxes (tweaks the 'ol L5!) Plus the latch catches all kinds of crud..and chains and such get stuck in the gaps on the ends. I always kept stuff I didn't use very often in them. Durn nice shop!!!

Long time no comment. By the look of that bulkhead connector at the valve cover riser..... which needs to get replaced, not just resealed... You need to check the connector on the ecm for oil. Engine oil will travel through the wiring harness and fill the ecm over time, when that happens it gets fried. Been working for a Cat dealer for 20+ yrs. I personally, would keep the twin turbos. I haven't seen anybody truly happy with the results of messing with their C15. We've had customers come in and have us put their engines back to OEM at huge amounts of money.

Looks like you'll be busy for more than a week. I think that timing cover will have to be removed and please be gentle if you use silicone, I've cleaned out many oil pump pick-ups clogged with chunks and giant snakes of silicone after repairs were done by "professionals". Nice upgrade to the 18spd, you'll enjoy driving it more with less wear and tear. Beautiful job making the ramps! If I didn't have more surgeries coming I'd love to come out and help work on the truck, perhaps when I'm back on my feet, thankfully I can fly free! My son is a jet mechanic and I get flight benefits. Whenever you show the drone footage I drool, I hate living in NYC and pray I don't die here, life always got in the way when opportunities came my way to move. Our plant (GM) went through and switched out all the light fixtures from high pressure sodium lights to LED fixtures. The new led fixtures have a sensor on the side of the fixture, if it detects movement within its working range it will turn the light on. They told us the cost savings on having the light fixtures turned off while people aren't working in the area is tremendous. Might be a little overkill for your shop as we have 1000+ light fixtures compared to your handful but you wouldn't ever have to touch a light switch again LOL! But in all seriousness LED might be the way to go, energy savings plus not having to change light bulbs/ballasts = winning.

There are LED tubes that you can get that let you eliminate the ballasts without changing fixtures, just some marettes and good to go. Costco actually carries them in our area. also, I vote move the tank and put a factory style battery box under the cab for storage.
@BigJfan7 жыл бұрын
If you're going to move the tank and you don't already have a fuel cooler,it would be good time to add one. I have a six foot double side door polished aluminum side box on my Kenworth. It sits on the mounts for the fuel tank. Never any signs of leakage. The eighteen speed comes in handy at times but I find myself driving it more like an eight speed. If you have to buy a trans jack, go with an OTC or Lincoln. Either one will make the job easier as well as safer. Happy New Year
@Jpaydirt7 жыл бұрын
I wondered about a cooler after feeling those tanks, where do they mount
@BigJfan7 жыл бұрын
Jpaydirt My Peterbilt has it mounted on the right side of the frame next to the rear of the transmission. It's plumbed into the return line. Very important to the C-15 engine due to the heui injection. It also allows you to put a resister in the fuel temp sensor tricking the ecm to inject hot fuel amounts instead of cold fuel amounts gaining up to 50 horsepower. The cooler also extends injector life as well as the o-rings and seals. Most effective during the summer months. If you don't run the cooler, make sure to keep the tank as full as possible.
@BigJfan7 жыл бұрын
Just a thought. If you're mounting the tanks across from each other: make sure that the cross members are sufficient in that section. I had a Brockway that someone added bigger tanks to and it cracked the cross member behind the cab repeatedly. Kenworth makes better frames and has bolted cross members so you should be all set but after seeing the deflection of the frame on my truck just from standing on the step changed the way I think. I also looked into the frame manufacturer in Vermont. They seem to be legit from the people I know who is them.

Well having owned 4 of those KW's over the yr's and driving several others along with a lot of bed work, my choice would be to leave the tank were it's at, I had an aluminum side box with a barn door hinge to the front made by Magnum which was there for many trouble free yr's and still there. I've had those KW combo step tool boxes and they aren't really that roomy and we're a pain in the ass removing Wing-Nuts to open and close. I found over the yr's that top access doors turn a box into a shit catcher that a lot of guys in a hurry just fire stuff in slam it closed and they end up being like a chest deep freeze with stuff on the bottom you can't see and end up digging for something that may be buried. Mine had a mid height shelf and was easy to organize and sealed well with never a leak. Jeez, I've pulled a lot of transmissions over the yr's and the worse one to get out from underneath I dropped off the jack skidded to the rear and slipped it out between the tank and front drive axle. You also have the ability and machines to lift the rear of the truck up a couple of feet off the shop floor for even more clearance...just saying....I was always one to do things the easy way with the least amount of disassembly. Question...is your mailing address current on the company Web site ??? ☻

Great video I think your asking for headache by going to single turbo on that particular engine! I don’t recommend it ! With the miles on that engine and the oil leaks you have might want to ck your crankcase vent/ filter for restriction or blow by and ck those wire harnesses close for oil fouling that can cause some headache down the road too! Can’t go wrong with a diamond plate tool box lol! Thanks for sharing looking forward to see your progress 👍

leave the tank and get an underbody tool box (side open). I've never had a problem with water or debris in mine in the 10 years I've had it. best reason for the side open is that when the door is open you can set stuff on it like a shelf. I think mine is a Deezee.

The tanks both back on the frame I always thought looked nice, especially on the longer trucks. 18 speed, RTLO is the way to go, they shift fast and smooth, it'll make it a real racer now that you've got the tuning dialed in. Load it like a freight car, drive it like a race car! That chloride is horrible stuff. I started using some salt neutralizer spray which helps, but it's bad stuff no matter what you do.

Personally I like the symmetrical look side to side. I will say moved a fuel tank back and added a factory box on a Pete. Don't know that I would do it again a whole lot of thing had to get moved along with the tank. New longer fuel lines, diverter valves, air dryer and air tanks. Think I might would go with a nice box for the passenger side. You should be able to pull your air tanks and bring you transmission out behind the tank. I would prefer to just pull the air tanks. Maybe throw a block of wood under the back if your air ride likes to settle just to keep the frame high. If you can find yourself a good 13spd way cheaper than the 18spd I would go that way. Although I don't haul as heavy as you I find I rarely split the bottom side. Actually the only time is in reverse to get a little more speed.

I think a decent trans jack would be a great investment, those Roadrangers are too heavy to fool with.

LED equivalent lights are much better, when a ballast goes out on one, we change out 1 row across in the shop. So we replace 4 at a time. Little less costly i guess all at once. But what a difference!

My 98 900L had tanks back and the battery box steps and I think they are the way to go. Another improvement would be to go to 8" stack/mufflers. Oh by the way Pura Vida from Costa Rica.

read somewhere that they don't much use scrappers anymore - that true?
@Jpaydirt7 жыл бұрын
Every tool has a purpose and moving huge amounts of dirt is scraper stuff, nothing can beat them for cost per yard they are used in CA heavily

I switched the shop over to LED about a year ago. I replaced 8 footers with a single 40 inch fixtures. 12 of them. I ended up with more light Lumen wise for about 40 percent of the power consumption. instant on in cold weather I am done with florescent fixtures

Me to I bet I have spent $600 bucks on ballasts
@BigJfan7 жыл бұрын
I'm tempted to switch over to them myself. My main concern is color blindness. In my experience trying to wire trucks under led lights is that it becomes difficult to tell a yellow wire from Green or white. Have you noticed that or did they come out with a better spectrum?
@thegreenerthemeaner7 жыл бұрын
Dan Bronzi Use the 5000K. They are brighter than 4000K and don't have that "yellow" effect.

I switched mine over in the last several years. Bypasses all the old ballasts in the existing fixtures then installed LED tubes with the hot pins on one end and the neutral on the other end. I also did some other LED retrofits when the power co. had a rebate program. At least with mine, you had to be sure and get Energy Star rated bulbs (they had to show up in the list on the EnergyStar web site) to qualify for the rebate. But that covered better than half the cost of the bulbs at the time.

If you don't mind the hassle of moving the tank, it'll be the better looking way to go IMHO ... always preferred the symmetrical myself.

Good morning. I agree LED lights are the way to go. They should last about 15 years, and way cheaper to run. I think you had the last 2 pictures reversed. The horses ass is way better looking than ol' Hillary. You've got a lot of work ahead of you. Better get at it!
@billgross14587 жыл бұрын
You should put a tack box on the frame and not move that tank. And you want a drop in box or a door on top. I have had both. The side doors are a problem and one raining day when you are bent over trying to get something out of the box and water is running down your backside you will understand.

Many yr's ago I tried Hemlock and got pretty decent service, there was lots of side loading and turning on the deck as it wasn't a detachable neck. The planks were 3" custom cut.

Move the tank.OLD SCHOOL in his comment has the right idea shiny toolboxes attract the wrong people.Definetly put an 18spd.in since your going to pull the trans.anyway.If your going to give new Kenny more giddy-up I myself would go with the 20918B to go with the hp.and torque increase.Just my two cents.Anyway Happy New Year Jeff hope it starts off with a good bang pun intended.!!!!
