I prefer the Apostrophe version, but this is very entertaining and is a good showcase of the talent in Frank's band.

Thanks! I love these live recordings. The lack of perfection compared with the studio recordings is more than compensated by knowing the fact that the band actually pulled these compositions off LIVE! And the solos, very often extended compared to the studio recordings. And the alternate arrangements. And the occasional small talk and audience participations. Denny Walley slide guitar and vocals, Warren Cucurrullo guitar, Tommy Mars keyboards and vocals, Peter Wolf keyboards, Ed Mann percussion, Arthur Barrow bass, Vinnie Colaiuta drums.

It was lost on the band and Frank, because they were American, but anyone from the UK knows that Broadmoor is high security mental hospital. And it was the title of the crazy poem about the garden!

Frank was beyond a songwriter, he was a composer.

I knew the Apostrophe version by heart when I came upon this many years ago; what impressed me most was Frank reciting Dylan Thomas from his poem In Milkwood without hesitation or stumbling. Amazing. And yes, you could tell that it was true audience participation. He did something similar with his Bebop Tango from Roxy and Elsewhere

Unfortunately you'll never have the experience of going to NYC every Halloween and seeing Uncle Frank in the 70s and 80s.listen to Zappa at the Ritz, that showwill blow your mind,Frank's guitar playing was from another world that night.

The poetry is indeed from people in the audience, not planned at all. I have to admit that maybe my favorite part of this is when Zappa says, "bring the band down behind me" and Vinnie does a big rim shot in response. Such a stupid drummer thing to do. :) And yeah Zappa's melodies are just wonderful. This is also really fun to hear in comparison to the original version on the album and how he would evolve songs over time and adjust them in great ways to whatever his current band is.

You sure have to listen to the original suite too, from Apostrophe. Audience participation happens from time to time with Zappa and one of the best example of that is the last track on Roxy and Elsewhere, Be-Bop Tango (Of the Old Jazzmen's Church).

One of my favorite versions. But there's no possible way anyone could really understand what's going on lyrically and instrumentally unless you're already familiar with the studio version suite.

Frank always played around with the songs live, rarely playing the song the same way twice. As for audience participation, he'd been doing that since he had to perform for many hours in New York during the 60s. Audience participation was a regular thing at his shows.

Great reaction - those little musical passages you're referring to often come from other longer compositions, in this case from an earlier piece called "Rollo" (the ending as well) This was fun but I **HIGHLY** recommend that you listen to the original Yellow Suite on Apostrophe

Yes, in this case you have to hear apostrophe first. Then you'd understand the rest of it as , not only improv but 'youd have to have been there. This is a theatre based piece.
