I'm almost done with my cathedral window quilt. What do you do when you're almost finished but you've lost your steam? Quilting encouragement needed to press through 🤓 The Cathedral Window Quilt is one of the quilts that I've always wanted to make.....My DREAM QUILT for sure! So-Why can't I finish it?

I came to this one from the full tutorial, so knew it was finished, but the backstory is even more interesting -- thank you for sharing! You’ll get it finished and your daughter will cherish it. My mother made me a Cathedral Window quilt as a HS graduation gift...took her 17 years to complete, but it’s completely hand sewn. Some of the prints were scraps leftover from making me clothes. She was an excellent seamstress, worked a full time job, raised five kids and worked the farm too. . She has passed and I miss her everyday, but I have my quilt and it is proudly displayed in our home.

I smiled when you said King size. I have a bag of Cathedral Window units from the 90s. I drove myself crazy trying to be perfect. I then started college and went on to a master's degree. Someday I will work on it again. I will probably be teaching my great-granddaughters the method because they will inherit my fabric collection.

This quilt is stunning! You CAN FINISH IT!! I started a king size, watercoIor Irish Chain quilt in June, 1999. It was almost complete but I put it away after a week because I did not like 1 of the fabrics & it has sat in a corner for 22 years. I pulled it out last week, decided it looked pretty good afterall, & finished it. I love it now & am so happy to have finished it!! Just get her done my dear!!

You go girl!!! Now you encourage me, please. LOL. I started my Cathedral Window Quilt about 6 years ago!! Took me a couple of years to complete the back, which I partially machine, and partially hand sewed. Then it was put away. Enter Covid and I retired. Ok, now was the time to face this project!! I finally finished hand sewing all those squares in. YES!!!! But I had a serious problem. The joints I had hand sewn kept coming unsewn!!! So now I am painstakingly machine sewing them down, again dragging my heels!!! HELP!! I’m so ready to be done. And the log cabin quilt for my grandson in law who graduated from fireman’s school!!! Lol

I want to encourage you and my self. My husband passed 2 years ago. And I haven't been able to sew. I keep a sewing machine in my living room and I visit quilt shops and watch sewing shows so I will pray for you to finish your quilt and please finish it a king size.

I had promised my daughter a quilt for nearly 3 years- I had the blocks made. I have health problems and knew I’d have problems getting it together due to its weight as it was a king scrap quilt with scraps sewn on fabric. By the time backing and batting was added it was really heavy. My husband helped me but it together and after I got started it went together quick. I had to tie it because I couldn’t quilt it on the machine, but it turned out pretty. Don’t give up. Get your pieces sorted out and organized and get started. You’ll be amazed how quick you can get it done and the satisfaction of finishing is wonderful. If you have a friend that can help - even better!! Good luck - don’t give up!!

I have two sons who also got married during the COVID lockdown - within 6 weeks of each other. I knew I could not finish one much less two quilts so I decided to make them each a quilt for their anniversary. I had them pick the quilt block pattern and color. One picked the Ohio star and the other picked a folded corner block. Anniversaries are just around the corner and I ended up sending the tops off to have machine quilted! It was a labor of love! Can’t wait to see the finished results!

I think it's lovely even in the 'unfinished' state! I watched the video of it done, as well, which is gorgeous, as well. But just wanted to say it would have been perfect with the 'empty' windows--since they are symmetrical, it works. And I think them being off center adds a modern flair, IMHO. Just an idea for someone to do it intentionally! Beautiful.

I'm with you, only it's been about 6 years since I started mine. I've had sooooo many projects before and since. I still pick it up and do a few squares every now and then. Just keep plugging away here and there. Before you know it it's done. I just finished a quilt for my middle daughter that way. It took me about 15 years to finish a baby sampler quilt as you go for my youngest daughter. This was my first quilt. She loves it.💝😵😍🎊🎉

So glad to see that you finished it. I have a quilt that was cut and pieces by my great grandma who passed even before my dad was born and my dad’s mom also worked on it. We found the pieces out at their farm after she passed. My grandma on my mom’s side and my sister finished piecing and binding the quilt. And I’ve been hand quilting it for years. I may finish it by the time I have great grand kids. I started it in my 20s. 🤪

This is beautiful & my dream quilt too. I have the pattern, I decided after speaking to a friend that it is a huge undertaking. I never thought of using the sewing machine. That is amazing! We met, dated, engaged & married in a 9 month period, 36 yrs ago. Mom had no time to make a quilt. We had 4 bridal showers in that 6 wks time. We received our wedding quilt on our 1st anniversary. My favorite and mom's favourite to make, Grandmothers flower garden. We still love it. Then my dad started a star and cube which he promised to me. He did very well with it but was interrupted with cancer, it leaves you with reduced insurance & concentration. Mom helped him finish it. I have learned through the years if you are making something and you give it to someone before it is finished, it is difficult to get it done, you lose your drive. You lose the surprise of giving the finished work. Press on you will be rewarded.

The quilt is awesome. So glad you have the patience to do that. I have a quilt I made for my grandsons graduation in 2020. He still doesn't have it. We were in the process of moving. We moved in late last year. Spent almost two years in our RV. I got it back from the quilter just before we left. All I have to do is cut the excess of and do the bonding. I haven't found it yet! Really long story. So I think you did great!

I can sure see how you could've lost your interest in such a huge project! I made a very small baby sized Cathedral Window quilt all by hand over 40 years ago. You are SO close to finishing! Would it be possible to commit to adding your 2" SQUARES maybe 2 a day, or 4 a day? How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Don't put a time limit to finish it, just plan TO finish it. And... you will finish it! It is absolutely an incredibly beautiful quilt! Love that pattern! Love your honesty! Keep us posted.

I have a quilt that I started quilting and I don't like the design I chose. I took it off the frame for a while. I have put it back on the frame twice now but still can't bring myself to finish the quilting. It is on my frame again and I going to get it done. I love the quilt and I know once I finish the quilting and wash it, it will look great. Your quilt is beautful and it needs to be finished. It will be something your daughter and son-in-law will treasure for years to come.

That looks wonderful! It will surely be a treasured heirloom for many years to come! I just finished my very first hand quilted large sized quilt that was supposed to be my “summer project” back in the 80’s courtesy of my aunt. I was supposed to hand piece all of the blocks that summer. Never completed more than one. My aunt lovingly pieced them into a quilt top and after my Mom passed away, we found them. This was now 2000. When pandemic hit I decided I will learn to hand quilt this top and finish this work in progress from c. 1984. I would get discouraged and somewhat bored and at some point after starting it let it sit for a couple months. I am used to machine quilting and finishing a quilt much quicker. My aunt, who is 96 years young, shared this advice with me - and here are her simple words of wisdom. Just set aside 30 min - one hour each day to diligently work on it and you’ll soon be finished. So tonight actually I finished sewing the binding on and I can say the longest WIP is finally done - except for the label. So just set aside 30 min - an hour to diligently work on your cathedral window and it will soon be finished! (I would love a tutorial of it also and I just want to also say I am totally envious your local Goodwill has a craft section!)

Hi, Tracy ,what a beautiful labor of LOVE!!!...it truly was. I saw this video here on Jan 24, 2022, after watching the tutorial. Now let me tell you my story, I am currently 65, my first quilt, the Sunbonnet Sue I made for my sisters 16 Birthday ( she will be 58 tomorrow). The 2nd quilt I attempted to make was the fan quilt, fast forward working as an alterations specialist( yes sewing is in my blood) for the next 40 + years, I retired in 2019 at 63, in the fall of 2019 I said i wanted to finish the fan quilt top. It was sewn so WONKY, there is a lot i learned in 40 years, i ripped and ripped and resewed almost every square( because i literally was surprised I had all the squares I needed, I had to take out and recut some pieces to replace, and to search thru fabric to find fabric I had from the 1970's!!!I do not throw any thing away!!!! Luckily i had them. I finished the top before Christmas of that year. I was so proud and its beautiful, I did not machine quilt it as of now, that time will come. I was so motivated , that by the middle of February I finished crocheting 2 afghans that i had started in the late 70's early 80's. Now for my Cathedral window story, first of all, my all time favorite Quilt, I had started it around the time of the fan quilt( middle to late 1970's) I purchased muslin and sewed my squares by machine , like you did and tacked my center corners by hand....sewed all my squares by hand, sewed all my print squares by hand( I don't want any repeat fabrics) , I had a good size piece finished.... your story reminds me I really want to finish it , the problem is the muslin to find what I used !!! I hate for 3/4 of the quilt to look different than the original 1/4 part...and I started reading all the encouraging posts. I thank all of you !!!

I think this quilt is beautiful! My "unfinished" task is my sewing work table that I bought so I would have a place to cut fabric, etc, to make masks. I finished some masks before I went to see my Mom and later a USMC friend in Washington DC. It's more than 10 months since I last used it. My sewing machine (and table) have long ago been put away, but this cutting table is now a place for lots of sewing notions, fabric, and all sorts of other "stuff" .... I walk past it multiple times a day, but just don't feel like organizing anything. Hard to sew again because of the mess! (and I just buy generic blue throwaway masks now ... And have tons more fabric to use for more quilts.

What a beautiful quilt!! I did a cathedral window pillow, so I know how much work goes in to it, and king size WOW! I read your comment that it is your daughter's dream quilt too, so it is extra special! I took on a sewing project last year as a gift for a loved one. I knew she would appreciate it, but I VASTLY underestimated the number of hours I would need to complete the project. It's been a cloud in my head. In all my free moments I get the thought "I should work on it." I did 2 things, 1) I enlisted the help of some sewing friends -we worked together for a day and made the task go much faster. And 2) I worked on it in small increments, doing little bits at a time, which seemed less overwhelming. I am happy and relieved to say that I finished the project today! It feels so good! You can do this!!

My third attempt at a quilt was a cathedral window! I’ve only gotten a strip the size of a table runner finished! It isn’t perfect, but the colors are still so beautiful. As for unfinished projects, I have about a zillion dragons I’ve been making. None are finished. I am the queen of unfinished projects!

I have several unfinished quilts. Before my mom died she wanted to make a quilt for each of her 19 grandchildren back in 2002. Well I decided to take on the challenge to make one for each of her grandchildren. So far I have completed 2, 1 ready to be quilted and 3 quilt tops. I have a long way to go. What held me up from getting started was her death, my mom taught me how to sew and every time I would look at my sewing machine I would remember my mom. Now it brings me joy and I am on my way and thinking of my mom always. It might be a neat thing to finish the quilt with your daughter and share a memory

Tracy, Tracy, Tracy. Finish that quilt by order of the quilting police! You cannot hand that gorgeous quilt to the UFO devils. I have a few as well that I have to finish. Three reasons to finish that quilt. 1. Your daughter and son in law are super nice people who are hiding their disappointment in not getting their wedding gift. 2. If you don't finish it now, when you reach my age, you will be hurting for time to get all the things done that you ever wanted to do. 3. If you don't finish it now, soon the stork is going to be arriving and not only you are going to have another project to work on, but your time is going to be taken up with that new being in your life. Oh and how about that beautiful white quilt be enjoyed now by the kids before the baby does his/her job of staining it!!!

I have a store bought quilt for a double bed..my bed is a queen so....building my stash on a budget to extend this quilt, I have 8 hanging towels to make for a dear friend for her birthday in June[have had everything needed for months]..have 2 sundresses cut out for the last 6 months...I am blaming the weather and my arthritis..lol...determined to attempt to finish before the end of June so I can attempt some projects I WANT to do...good luck with motivation!

@ Annie Ruth - Yes, I like this idea too. You could call that segment of each weekly tutorial, "Cathedral Countdown", with a little signage/chart/thermometer that shows how far you gone and how far to meet the goal. Viewers can view your chart and along with seeing your progress, they might be challenged to have their own countdown and share in the comments where they are also in reaching their goal.

This pattern is my favorite also. When my grandmother passed away years ago she had one started and pieces in all the steps but no pattern! This was back in the 80's, so no Internet and I did not know any quilters at the time. My college room mate and I spent a long time trying to figure out how it went together. We finally worked out all the pieces and I made some small pillows for my family. You really should finish this quilt for your daughter and her husband. I know it will be a treasure for their family. I suggest you take all the left over pieces and make a table runner or something using Christmas fabrics and give it to your daughter. The quilt is beautiful!

When I was a Junior in highs school I cross stitched 12 blocks. Now I’m 66 and have lost 1 of my blocks. This is one of many WIP. Your quilt is beautiful. It will be an heirloom.

My mother made a Cathedral Window Quilt, for a double bed, back in the early 1960s. That quilt was so heavy that no one wanted to sleep under it. It wasn't a warm quilt either. What ever become of that quilt, I don't know. It was beautiful. I don't know if she ever washed it. It would have been hard on any machine, or person, to wash it. I have made samples at quilt shows; but, I have never wanted to make large Cathedral Window Quilt; because, it takes a lot of fabric, it is heavy when finished, it is not warm to sleep under, and it would be very hard to get it clean. But, Cathedral Window quilts are beautiful. However, one day I want to make a Stained Glass double bed quilt.

I love the "Tracy way" and I love this cathedral quilt. I love the thoughtfulness that you put into making this quilt. Your intention was to make a king size quilt for your daughter's wedding. Then, the pandemic hit, crushing many of our hopes, dreams, plans, and aspirations when it did. The motivation to finish this beautiful project was the anticipation of bringing joy and creating something so special for your daughter and son-in-law. Last year, almost all of the joyous occasions felt a bit dampened by the weight of the pandemic. This summer, things are much better, but we're not really feeling like everything is going to be back to the normal we once took for granted. So, maybe, a way to motivate yourself to finish is to focus on the joy you will give and receive when you give this to n your daughter and son-in-law. If you feel like a queen size quilt will not work for them, finish it anyway and then give yourself some time to allow your creative "Tracy way" to make it work (add a beautiful border??). Set small easily attainable goals and build on those accomplishments. Before you know it, you'll be feeling that inspiration to get you past the finish line. You got this! As for our interest in seeing a tutorial on this, I definitely would love to do this--after you've finished and d feel satisfied with this quilt. 😉 Last but not least, I started embroidering a Peter Rabbit themed quilted blanket during my first pregnancy. I didn't finish it at that time because the baby (now a grown man) had hiccups for 2 hours every night for the last 10 weeks of the pregnancy and I just couldn't finish it. Two years later, I pulled that unfinished quilt out of my closet and finished it just before our second son was born. My motivation was to get it done the second time around even though I was disappointed that I didn't finish it the first time. I hope that at least one of the comments from us viewers helps you feel inspired. If not one of us, maybe you will find motivation from your grand daughter 🥰 Last but not least, you have a new quilting sewing machine that you got last summer. Maybe there's a fun feature on the new machine that might make the project all the more enjoyable. Best wishes for finding the fun and motivation as you finish this beautiful cathedral quilt!

I can identify with you, I have a project that is a rag quilt, my first one, it has beautiful colors, light pink, white, tan, dark pink, and I started on it about 3 months ago, I got about a 3rd of the way and stopped......I kept thinking about it, and thinking, and thinking.......😫 Then finally, last night, I finally said enough!! I'm going to pick it back up, I worked on it until late, I'm about 2 thirds of the way now, you have to just make up your mind that you are tired of thinking about it and just go start it again, I watched some quilting videos and that got me motivated😊 you can do it, it's too beautiful not to finish it❤️.

I made a queen size for my daughter. Took 2 months and so many long days. I am still clipping loose threads since I made traditional way. My blocks were 9 small white squares . 6 blocks accross 7 rows. The last 2 rows were nearly killing me. I used my juki 2010 on diningroom table and rolled it longways. You do get to a point where you are just done, over it, need a break. But they are beautiful!

I made a baby-sized cathedral window for my nephew. My sister wanted a fuzzy, almost cuddle, fabric on the back, and that was probably the hardest thing I had ever done to a quilt! Only because of the work and time that went into making that cathedral window.....and then to cover the back?!?!?! But I did it and she loved it. I did not put anything inside the colored squares, but I think that is a great idea to do! The one you are making is GORGEOUS, and what a gift! It will be a family heirloom! Can't you see your great-grandchildren looking at all those individual no-repeats one day? It will be worth it! Sew on!

Bless your heart, Tracy! What an immense sewing project you took on for this amazing wedding gift. I started a quilt, a jelly roll race quilt that has 2 1/2" square connectors in between each 2 1/2" fabric strips. Used almost all of 2 jelly rolls. Intended on making 2 matching pillow shams afterward. The quilt size got out of control, so I decided to cut it down to a queen, and then use the trimmed off part for the pillow shams. Got it finished but not quilted yet. I need the floor space to be able to sandwich it together before quilting. I was also in the process of reorganizing my upstairs when a serious heart condition landed me in the hospital 3 times in 2020. Needless to say, I've not gotten my house reorg finished or the quilt either. A lot of what I'm wanting to give to Salvation Army has yet to be boxed up. Covid stopped a lot of charities from taking donations last year so everything has been stacking up. I've never felt so overwhelmed in my life! I know it's just a matter of diving in and starting again. You and I just go into our sewing rooms, turn on the music, and start sewing. Just starting the project again is half the battle. Prayers to you! A lifetime of happiness and joy to your daughter and son-in-law!!!

Oh wow, does that bring back memories. I too made a cathedral window quilt about 30 years ago that was suppose to be a king that ended up being a twin 😩. I did save more fabric in case I wanted to expand it. I also used a different piece of fabric for each window. My quilt is called “My Charming Cathedral Window”. It didn’t end up the size I wanted but it is beautiful and an heirloom. All my windows are hand appliquéd in place like the olden days. I didn’t realize the time commitment I was making when I started this quilt. I did win an award at a quilt show for it.

I made a dachshund quilt that’s unfinished. I need to quilt it. All the piecing is done. I totally understand what you’re feeling. I am getting back to it. I think, like you, I worked many late nights after work and got the top done and finally put the batting in and pinned the back. I rolled it up to start quilting and it’s still in my table 😂.

What an incredible and loving gift. Your love along with your talent has been poured into that quilt for your daughter! What a blessing! What a tribute! What a blessed daughter/son-in-law! People who do not sew/quilt don't really understand (as one can only do through experiencing or doing the same thing) the amount of time, effort and let's be honest, the expense that goes into making a quilt... or a bag... or you name it. I understand and can clearly see that making it has been a labor of love but still a labor! You've come this far... you have to finish it! Imagine the feeling of accomplishment you would have! Not to mention the joy! On the flip side, if you don't finish it... it will nag and haunt you! You will feel bad about it. You know yourself; set a goal that works for you to get it done. Maybe that would mean a certain number of hours spent on it each week or each day; you decide on whatever works for you. Give yourself time for breaks from it and other projects that can be completed much more quickly. Slow and steady wins the race! Maybe your daughter would like to help you complete it? Good luck! I'm rooting for you!

Covid was what allowed me to finish 4 quilt tops using fabric I bought years ago for 1 quilt. After 2 different starts & taking apart, I finally came up w a quilt top I was happy with. The other 3 were scrappy quilts that I saw from a tutorial. At least yours is backed already!!! Yes, I'd love to see a video of you finishing it. Thanks for posting the unwrapping on the wedding day. I put a quilt down for over two years before I picked it up again - definitely could see how much I had grown in my quilting - I did complete it and sold it - someday I will make another - my method now is to set a timer for 30 minutes to an hour to work specifically on a WIP until complete - you can do anything in small bits until your “mojo” returns for it - it is a stunning quilt amd would love to see a tutorial on it
