I don't consider Catherine Howard as a tainted queen, more like an abused child who was used by those around her. Way too young for a 50 odd year old king, who was suffering all sorts of ailments. How tragic for her she did not have a good upbringing pawned off by whom ever would have her and did not have the education and sophistication of Anne Boleyn. Poor soul.

This is maybe the most tragic of the wives henry killed...she just a teenage girl that was first preyed upon by a middle aged man, then beheaded for being a typical teen girl that just wants to have fun and fall in love. Someone, somehow, should have stopped that 'man' called henry the 8th on his killing spree. No one man should have that much power.

This whole story is just insane, I mean a rape survivor who just wants to be a girl plays Queen to a madman. 15 may have been considered older then, but we understand it just isn’t old enough nowadays. Thanks for making me learn about a part of the Tudors I overlooked as well. Poor girl just was never in the right place to save herself from the grasping hands of men.

@@lechatbotte. Strictly speaking, he had only two of his wives beheaded. And by 1540, the Church of England was completely under Henry's thumb and would have granted him a divorce from Catherine. There is no record of his him seeking to divorce his 5th wife. He simply used the 16th Century equivalent "the nuclear option" and went straight to beheading.

13-year age gap? Did I hear that correctly? There was much more than 13 years between them. More like 30. Catherine was a child and a victim of her time, circumstances, and the selfishness, laziness, and ambitions of the people around her. She was doomed from the day her mother died.

I'd agree that Howard might have been abused growing up but she also made bad choices and took reckless chances of her own violation. She should have known how dangerous Henry was after what he did to Anne Boleyn like everyone else. Howard was still very young. All she had to do was wait for Henry to die and she would have ended up a rich widow and live the rest of her days in comfort with a husband more to her liking like Catherine Parr and Anne of Cleves.

Anne Boleyn was 15 years older - most likely the utter horror and trauma of what happened was never spoken of again by the family. Also She may have never been told what exactly happened or what to avoid, as she was so neglected growing up. That seems to be the standard then. I wonder if her maid/advisor Jane Boleyn, Lady Rochford, widow of Anne’s executed brother, hated H8 (why maybe she was the go between) so much in revenge to want to help them meet in private, and was arrogant or foolish enough to think another terrible carnage could not happen again. ? Maybe Katherine was not yet fully aware of the degree of deceit and treachery those around her at court. If she was blackmailed into giving jobs those who knew her before court, it would be done again! She just didn’t know what she was getting into. Snakes all around and it was too late.

@@christina3521correct. Even my great grandparents wouldnt talk much about their past or family. The family likely swept it under the carpet and didnt really inform Katherine of Anne. Not to mention Katherine was basically abandoned and not likely that close to her family. Raised by that duchess, it is unlikely much was expected of her. It is clear to see she wasn't taught just how prudish the society she was in really was. She was groomed in sexual relationships far too young and taken advantage of. She also just wasn't educated like other women of her family. She was naive and already abused when Henry wanted her. She stood no chance at all.

Poor Catherine was a babe in the woods, really. No more able to contend with the jealousies, power manoeuvres or influencers at court than she was to cope with a sick, irascible old man. Just like Anne Boleyn she had plenty of encouragement but no support from her ambitious family and was far less able than Anne. She really didn’t stand a chance. But then few aristocratic girls did in those days, seen as pawns in the marriage market to advance the family fortunes.

Some themes repeat themselves. Chump Charlie had screwed around for over a decade, however, for his wife to be approved she had to be a virgin. When his wife didn't put up with his horrible lies, even more horrible mistress, he was even more cruel to her. Then, the divorce from the lovely Princess Diana. She would still, not go along with royal commands. Henry beheaded his wives, Chump Charlie arranged death by car crash. Diana had even hand written notes that Chump Charlie was planning her death. He couldn't have Princess Diana publicly executed so he used a modern version, the oh so convenient death by car crash.

The note in Princess Diana's handwriting that she knew Chump Charlie was planning to have her killed, using a car crash. Getting Princess Diana out of the way was oh so convenient. Just as convenient as shielding Prince Andrew from his activities with Jeffrey Epstein. C'mon, it's so clear. Most people in the UK believe that Princess was taken out by the royal family.

I would add her father was not a good manager of money either. Anne Boleyn got him a job to bring in money- managing finances in Calais.

What a horrible time to live in which a teenage girl can be killed for supposed "adultery". But the middle aged pedophile who married her an abused her is applauded by the people. Not to mention the other pedos who abused her previously. Disgusting times...but the most terrifying part?to think there are places in the world where women and little girls are treated like this, even today.

I think even the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk would say the same thing to ME about cutting down on "banqueting by night" (nightly snacking), although I'd say back "With all due respect madm, I'm not one of your wards."

Catherine was a sexually abused child who was coerced into marrying Henry by her relatives for their benefit and prestige. Who can blame her for loving young, handsome Thomas Culpepper instead of old, obese, smelly, tyrannical Henry. Her life was ruined by her male relatives who guilted her into marrying Henry, and enjoyed the power that came along with the marriage, but then threw her to the wolves when things went wrong. Her own Uncles declared her guilty, did nothing to help her, and let her die. She was an uneducated, vain, and somewhat silly teenager who was used and abused, and who didn't think past the moment, but she did not deserve her fate. Henry could have just divorced her, but instead beheaded her for her crime of not loving him.

He didn't start out evil. Remember, he wasn't raised to be king. Neither he nor his parents expected him to come to power. It took years of holding absolute power to turn him into the man whose dearest friends couldn't trust him.

She was way too young for him but Norfolk would have it. He wanted another Howard Queen and Kathryn was attractive and Norfolk saw her sexual potential which would lead to her having the King infatuated after the Anne of Cleves debacle. Norfolk took advantage of the Anne of Cleves situation.
