Anne Boleyn last days is one of the most told stories in history. Anne's words will always be remembered, a young woman who was thrust into the limelight and became Queen Anne Boleyn of England. Yet like many others, Anne fell at the hands of King Henry VIII. This Tudor love was quite possibly the most intense ever witnessed. Henry was completely besotted by this lady, yet as usual, he quickly became disenfranchised and bored with her inability to produce an heir. We now look at her last days of life at court, leading to her death on 19 May 1536.
She was the first English Queen to be executed in public, yet 500 years after her death, she still warrants much attention. Anne Boleyn became one of the biggest stars in history and certainly raised the profile of Henry and his Tudor regime.
Anne may be gone, and her final last days are a reminder of how brutal Henry and his court could be! Anne Boleyn is a lady whose fame still inspires others today to write and stage productions about one of the most influential and important queens England has ever had.

Anne Boleyn died with such dignity & for her to plead for her co accused was extremely noble of her. God knows how she kept her composure. As much I try to avoid attaching presentism, it still amazes me how fragile & cheap life was in the Tudor era, especially if you were part of Henry viii’s court.

As you have rightly stated, we will never know the whole truth. I truly believe Anne Boleyn was a victim. She, as a woman in Tudor times was nothing more than chattel. In so many ways she is reviled and portrayed wrongly. To me this is a very sad story for a woman who had not had the chance to show her value as queen.

Thank you for bringing her to life so vividly and honoring her memory! 19th of May is always a highly tragic day for me, but it helps and I truly believe she has left a huge trail and legacy behind her and will never be forgotten ❤️

Henry was such a strange and frightening man. He turned on just about every woman who ever got close to him, and I don't just mean his wives. At one time he was close to his sisters, but he eventually felt out with the both of them. He was in the beginning an affectionate father to his daughters, but eventually he shunned the both of them. He was supposedly fond of his niece Margaret Douglas but he sent her to the tower. It seems his love for any woman, whether romantic or fraternal, could easily turn to hate. You wonder if he would have eventually been a faithless son to his own mother had she lived long enough.

Thanks Jon 👍😀 Loved the dramatic and artistic opening and the very touching closing with the candles. Great first video on Anne Boleyn who is not only my fav of Henrys wives but also my fav historical figure. I know the facts of Anne's downfall well but never tire of hearing them so I was certainly interested to hear your take on the events of early 1536 which occured at an eye opening speed. We don't know how much Henry knew of events or whether or not he was responsible but he certainly brought Anne down as quickly as he raised her. Anne's final miscarriage in January was the last straw. Henry was hell bent on having a son and that is why he moved on to Jane so fast. Their betrothal took place just the day after Anne's execution. Henry certainly did not let the grass grow. I kind of understand why Anne was relieved at the death of Catherine. Anne had hoped that everyone would finally acknowledge and accept her as the undisputed Queen. Anne did not know what would happen just mere months later. It's like Henry had waited for Catherine's death so he could move against Anne. If he had done so beforehand he may have been expected to take Catherine back. The events of early 1536 certainly look like they were planned. However unpopular Anne was with people during her time as Queen, she certainly won the sympathy of many who knew of her innocence including her nemesis Chapuys. The reading out of Anne's purported final letter to Henry was a nice inclusion in the video. Apparently Cromwell received the letter before Henry did so it's unlikely Henry got to see it. It's doubtful Henry would've read it anyway. However beautiful that glass memorial on Tower Green is, its location is unfortunately incorrect. The actual location of Anne's execution is between the White Tower and present day Waterloo Barracks. The tower has changed a good bit since Anne's day. Thanks again Jon, much appreciated as always.

@@HistoryRoadshow I am not 100 percent sure, but if you look at their behavior in context. It is not a good look. Right before Henry arrested Anne, Anne dismissed Henry's mistress and put in Madge Shelton. Henry Norris was her suitor. Then Anne makes the unfortunate dead mens shoes comment. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to see what Norris said to Henry after the mayday joust. Then before Anne knew what was happening Kingston reported she blurted out the names of Breyrton, and Westin. Plus it was a really really bad omen that she miscarried on the day of Catherine's funeral. Catherine was john of gaunts grand daughter. Henry might have thought God was seeking revenge. He had an infantile understanding of God.
@lyndsaycrawford
@lyndsaycrawford 3 жыл бұрын
@@wednesdayschild3627 I agree. I would say they were mocking her. There’s just too many contemporary accounts. Eustace Chapuys was around Tudor court for many years & I believe (well speculate) that he would’ve acknowledged if the yellow was a sign of some Spanish respect. Imo it was the exact opposite. Rejoicing over CoA’s death doesn’t mean Anne (or the 5 poor men) deserved to die. I believe when Anne acted spiteful or cruel it came from her own insecurities & desperation as most of catholic Europe & England would never accept her as queen while Catherine was still alive. But it was such a disservice to poor Catherine not to get a queens funeral or burial. She was royal blood with or without Henry. Without attaching presentism I do understand Henry’s desperation & obsession for a male heir but I think he used his “divine kingship” & his relationship with God to suit himself.
@lyndsaycrawford
@lyndsaycrawford 3 жыл бұрын
@@HistoryRoadshow that’s true. All we can ever do is try to compare contemporary unbiased accounts & weigh it all up & create an opinion. I do believe Anne’s male relatives definitely dangled her in front of Henry for their own ambitions but she did seem ambitious & determined to become queen. Personally I’d say it was a case of “be careful what you wish for” she must’ve been devastated how things turned out but her strength to keep her dignity & composure can only be admired.
@wednesdayschild3627
@wednesdayschild3627 3 жыл бұрын
@@lyndsaycrawford Henry may have thought of becoming clergy when his brother was alive. Imo henry had an flawed understanding of God. Catherine tried to call him on it. I can't remember where but she told him it was a fallen world and it was the will of God and they had to conform themselves to Gods will. Nobody was being punished. He had Henry Fitzroy. I understand him too because of the war if the Roses. Imo Henry and Anne didn't think things through. Henry would have to ally themselves with small German speaking protestant Europe. France and the Holy Roman Empire were not ever going to be protestant. I think Anne really believed the ideology, Henry not so much.

I find Anne Boleyn story fascinating and love videos like this that talks or her life and her tragic end. While part of me thinks she reaped some seeds she sowed particularly in breaking up a 20-year marriage and making Katherine's life miserable. Yet she was the victim of her time. I often wonder how her story would have played out if the players (Anne, Henry, Katherine...) would have lived in today times. It didn't help she had enemies at court that orchestrated her downfall and played on the King's mental instability either. Yet I strongly believe she was executed because Henry messed up royally (no pun intended). Changed the course of kingdom and history to marry Anne so he could get that male heir and only to be disappointed and he couldn't stand to be a laughing stock amongst his fellow royals and subjects. His ego and vanity was to be seen as a failure and Anne had to bear the grunt of this blame. Therefore, to save his face he had to cut off her head hiding behind lies and saying he was setup and bewitched.....Total BS.... Yet fate did give Henry two son both dying young yet it was the girls who made a stamp in history....mostly the daughter of Anne ….Elizabeth

Thank you for the video and for honoring Anne's memory on the 19th. Please be careful when saying Henry was bored with Anne. We don't have any evidence of that which I have seen. You did leave out a very important part of her letter. First, it's not proven she wrote that by her own hand, or her mind, but many believe it was from her indeed, and more likely taken down by a scribe since the handwriting hasn't been matched. The meat of the latter that fascinates me, is that Anne very politely threatened Henry that she was innocent and that he would have to face his maker one day and own up to that (said in better Tudor phrasing than I put it lol). Very strong words in those religious times! Copies of this letter were later found in Cromwell's papers. Please look up Sandra Velosi, an author/historian who was granted rights to read Henry's original letters to Anne in the Papal Library. In her research, she discovered a contemporary notation that Henry expressed on his deathbed great grief (regret?) about Anne's execution. This makes me highly suspicious that after Cromwell's fall, somehow, someone may have found the letter in Cromwell's papers and maybe, just maybe, Henry read it just before his death, realizing she was indeed innocent - because he was then facing his maker. **ALSO, please see the Hever Castle website!!! There's a new discovery by a young historian regarding Anne's smaller book of prayers released by Hever on May 19, 2021. !! JUST WOW!

I think their love was above all the others, even Jane Seymour, he never forgot her all his life. The case against her was manufactured, at least I think so, as Henry was desperate for a son and couldn’t wait - doubt Jane S would have survived very long if she hadn’t produced Edward and died ! Henry’s wandering eye would have soon settled on someone else - Jane was such a pale excuse for a queen for him.- she was quite crafty though in gaining his attention and putting Ann in a bad light. You can see I don’t care for her very much. I admire Ann at a distance and feel she was so badly used. However her daughter proved the greater monarch and way beyond her father and noxious sister. Well done Ann

Anne Bolynn did die a horrific death. She chose this life to be with Henry and to discard Catherine. Must not forget how Catherine was treated and how she died. She fought to keep her marriage but she couldn't fight against the fact that she could no longer have children and that she would never be able to give Henry a male heir. Therefore she had to be discarded but it was in the way that they did it but she did not deserve that treatment had to have her daughter taken away from her. So Catherine died and so did Anne, it seems that what goes around comes around. Anne Bolynn loses her daughter too. She leaves Henry and all of England the greatest monarch that England has ever had. So it wasn't a male heir that was needed to make England a great country. The two women suffered the first one fighting for her's and her daughter'sr rights the second dying for her daughter's rights. Did the second wife pay the ultimate price for suppressing and badly treating the first wife. Possibly so. As they say God moves in mysterious ways.
