Reminds me of my mother. She was brought up in North Woolwich and saw the docks ablaze during the war. Nothing could phase that woman. And her language was exactly the same (but never the C word, which was unforgiveable!). Chain smoking and swearing when it suited her. You dare not say anything to upset her, she would put you in a strangle hold!

She got inspiration for the nan when she visited a nursing home (she was performing a play with her performing arts group) when they walked in there was an old lady. The first words to come out of the nans mouth was ' here we fucking go!' And throughout the performance this old lady would keep on making crude comments!

You must watch Catherine Tate Meets The Queen (on KZbin). Every year there's a Royal Variety Performance in the UK. Catherine Tate was asked to perform before the Queen. She does a sketch of her teenage character Lauren. Loving your reactions!

a few years ago i visited someone who was in prison , the charecters that were also visiting were a joy to watch , they could easily be wrtten into a comedy or drama show , one woman in perticular always threatened her kids ..... " if you don't behave , i'll leave you here with your dad " :)

It was at one home that she came across this old woman who was swearing and complaining, hence we have the character, Nan.

The old people I saw growing up were just like that, she's based on cockney, but they were just the same in the north of England , but alot of been through at least one war ..
