Adding the shell to your truck is a great idea. I set my truck (2002 Chevy) with a shell by A.R.E. I bought an oversized cot(I am 6-7 tall) and added an air mattress and 2 moving pads for a comfortable bed. Only inflate the air mattress about 1/2 to 2/3rds full. If you fill it all the way at sea level and then go way up high it potentially pop on you. You can then store items in plastic bins that slide under the cot. Place the cot as far to the left or right and you will have a crawl space wide enough to have space for a small ice chest or other equipment. If you have sliding windows you could even heat up something to eat.

You can get a weatherstripping kit for the tailgate that will significantly cut down on the amount of dust. Picture the inside of a vacuum cleaner.

Dust is best when learned to live with. I blow it out with a air hose when I get near a shop compressor. Trying to wipe or "dust" only chases it into cracks and crevices. Trying to stop it from getting in might minimize it, at least it prolongs the eventual deep clean.

The truck canopy is a great idea. It not only opens up way more areas for you to explore, but you can use it as an emergency shelter if something happens and you can't get back to your home base. A bed, sleeping bag, small cook stove, food, water and other essentials and you are as snug as a bug in a rug for several days.

I think this was brillant to add. Two things I saw from other utube channels with caps on their trucks I think you might be interested in. First, a Michigan lady, showed how she insulated, the top and sides to keep it warmer in winter. She added several rugs to the floor to insulate that. Then she slept in it on a raised platform/couch at -10 degrees. She carries a sawdust toilet with lid that she doubles as a seat. She added low watt string lights across the top of the cap that run off the power supply. Second, this guy from the Carolina's made a tarp extention with telescoping poles that allows you to cover over the backend of the cap and sides with a tarp. It sits just above the roof a few feet back and extends out beyond the back end so when it rains you have a shelter with sides that extends 5 feet beyond the back of the truck. You can leave your top and tailgate open. He had a power supply, too and had a little one burner hot plate to cook on the tailgate. He sat on a lawn chair during a rain and didn't get wet. Also you aren't getting water in the bed everytime you open the back end to get in. You need some tie downs for wind but it was a genius idea. At night you can still close and lock the backend because the tarp doesn't interfere with the operation. Utube Girl in the woods kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5ioqHmMo8t3rKc You could use some of her ideas.

Good morning Cat! With a cold cappuccinio (We're supposed to hit 105F (40C) today...!), this awesome video makes an excellent chaser. Catherine, you keep outdoing yourself with the videography. Do you even have an "upper limit" on your artistry? I think you're really going to like the lower profile of the shell, as opposed to higher center of gravity you had with the camper. One suggestion I have is to get a couple of tubes of RTV sealant. Go through the shell and use that to seal the joints. Allow time for it to cure, not just dry. RTV is available in clear and black. I use clear because there is something in the black RTV that lets it conduct at RF frequencies. And, I swear by it for sealing antenna connectors. One hint: When you buy the RTV, make sure you either have nail polish on-hand, or buy some. RTV can be nasty to get on your fingers. Nail polish remover makes it easy to get off. (Nail polish remover also works great at removing "Krazy Glue" or other ACC-based adhesives.) As for camper vs trailer? I can think of only one place in my travels where the trailer could be a problem: Westgard Pass. (Yes, it's one of my favorite drives. I always take the time to stop at Lida Peak.) Idaho makes a nice lead-in to Montana or Wyoming, if you're heading east. If you're heading into Montana and haven't tried huckleberry ice cream yet, please consider that a must-do! I've mosly taken back roads in Montana. At a ""mom & pop" convenience store in a little town, I got some truly homemade huckleberry ice cream. One of the best parts of that trip. Don't worry about the calories! Some things in life are worth it! May Almighty God continue to Bless, Guard, Protect, and Guide you onto even greater adventures. 73...

Regarding the camper shell.. don't need to tell a pro like you that adequate headroom sitting on your bed pallet is worth sacrificing some storage space underneath. And some eyebolts attachments for an awning to extend the tailgate area for cooking out in the rain.. and perhaps tiedowns for rear rooftop solar shower bag. I'm a fan of not over-building the inside, for sake of more flexibility of usages.

So....did you see any Redfish? HAHAHA! Great choice of the cab height fiberglass camper shell. Consider some type of internal lock if/when you sleep inside. VERY CAREFUL with food inside at bear country! Simple plywood plank 36/42" wide, hinged to the truck side rail. Use simple 2x4 edge with 2, 2x4 legs, swing down/through carriage bolts with wing nut/flat washer/lock washer. Flip up (check plank/bed width to not hit ceiling) with if you need to get something large/awkward inside (bicycle?). Cut plank half, hinge middle if plank too wide/high when flip up. Also, if you use 3 residential door hinges with removable pins (mount to truck rail) makes easy to remove the plank. Awe nuts! Just use your imagination! You might have a longer that fits perfectly?! Nothing fancy required!

Hi Cat! My wife and I did what you're planning on doing with your shell. It was OK, but the only drawback we found was that on a colder night, there would be an enormous amount of condensation formed from our body heat and breathing. We would wake up and everything would be wet, as the shell keeps moisture in whereas a tent tends to breath more. However, you don't know til you try. Good luck!

I've seen people pull trailers, usually pretty short trailers, over some crazy roads. I've seen roads that didn't prohibit trailers but restricted the overall length. Many years ago we owned a large pop-up tent trailer and towed it lots of places, but we ended up in places where we had to unhook the trailer in order to turn around, and in one national monument we had to unhook the trailer and leave it behind to do one out and back road. When we finished we hooked our trailer up and continued on our journey.
@ronsowers17872 жыл бұрын
The shell is almost a perfect match. Close enough I wouldn't be worried about it. The combination of it and the trailer makes your possibilities nearly limitless. It was also a smart move to have a smaller trailer. I think this contributes greatly to your ability to cool it using just your solar reserves not to mention the fuel savings with the reduced weight. I can't wait to see where the future takes you next \O/

Good morning, Catherine! We also bought a Class C, but we choose to also bring our pickup that has a shell on the back. My partner drives the RV and I drive the truck. Yes, expensive in these times. But we try to boondock on dispersed camping as possible. We utilize the truck for runs into town for supplies and for short sight-seeing jaunts. At first friends expressed surprise that we chose to do this, but our shell also holds the extra large package of TP, cases of water, separate camping gear, etc, plus but it allows us to separate heavy winter jackets and sweaters from the limited space in the RV. Our Class C has pretty limited outside storage plus half the largest storage area is the home of our solar. Works for us! So of course, I totally get your reason to add a shell to the truck. Happy travels!

😎👀🤔 So Catherine I think the truck cap is great I think the only thing different I would do than you is turn the back seat in the truck into a bed benefit of locking the doors at night access to the front of the truck in case you have to leave in a hurry etc. the back could be turned into whatever you like

I agree this might be your best camping video to date! So much to take in . You keep finding these places that are hard to leave one right after the other.

Yes, what you have done has opened another level of camping for you. Very smart of you! Check out. Girl in the Woods videos to get ideas of how she shows what she’s done now that she put a shell on her truck. I’m sure you have your own ideas also , but never hurts to see more. Just a suggestion. Thanks for always sharing. I’m in northern UT. If you ever need a place to park. Have a little ranch by the river, horses, chickens, plenty of space, electric hookup.

Love the modification you have done with the cap. I think it’s wonderful that it opens up more opportunities to explore in those hard to get to places. Great decision!

The Shell make the bed so much more usable and you can set up a nice back woods overland layout in there.

Truck mods are good. Get yourself a topper rack and a kayak. You” ll be all set. You and your friend must have designed and installed the solar pretty well. To be able to run the air on two panels.👍

Love the shell. BTW, I love the phrase "tad bit windy." It's funny to hear a younger person like you say such an old fashioned thing. It gave me a laugh. Thanks.

I really appreciate the positive reinforcement. I was very nervous about how switching to the trailer from the truck camper would be received. Ultimately, I need to do what is best for my quality of life out here. Thank you!!
