What if...you made 2 layers of cake (split the batter into 2 pans), stuff it with the filling, then top the whole shebang with the frosting? Even make just a tad more filling 'cause there's never enough filling in a Ding Dong or a Hostess Cupcake! Think I'll give that a shot... Great idea, though, Catherine...as usual!

Sis and I used to make cakes for a bakery. Tip warm up your milk and butter in a pan. Warm milk hydrates the flour faster than cold or cool milk. Either use jumbo eggs or add an extra egg white. It will add moisture also. We made 90% of our cakes from scratch as the crumb from homemade is so much better and tender than box mix.

Would you like a hint to get your cake level with no hump in the middle or dry edges? My dad used to mold plastic foam parts at his job and they always put the molds (pans) on a vibrating table which shook it back and forth a very little and he would do a tapping up and down motion to get the wet material to level out and he taught me to do it with cakes, it levels and eliminates bubbles.

Would you ever consider using coconut oil instead of crisco?( Same consistency) some people wouldn't because they think it would taste too much like coconut but it really doesn't. Also avocado is a good replacement for vegetable or canola oil and it's tasteless and higher burning point than olive oil. Would you ever consider using it? Thanks for your yummy recipes 😇💙😊

Ding Dongs have always been my fave Hostess cake. This looks delicious but may I suggest one alteration? Please take away that awful canned frosting? A Ding Dong has dark chocolate on it. That frosting shouldn't even be sold. Ganache is super easy and it would be PERFECT! You could make a beautiful Dark Chocolate Ganache with just Dark Chocolate and Heavy Cream. It would elevate this from a 5 to a 100. Just a suggestion. Love your channel as always. Sometimes I don't see a video til it's been out for awhile.

I make something similar except I make it into a poke cake to get the ooey gooeyness all the way down into the cake. One perk of that is you never have any left over frosting : ) I always make it a couple of days in advance because it seems the longer it sets in the fridge, the better it is! I set it out about an hour before serving to bring it to room temperature.
