As a "cradle" Catholic, I have a tremendous respect and admiration for converts who have left the comfort of their own faith for the Church. I can only imagine how difficult it must be. You are in the company of some very intellectual people. You're probably familiar with the recent converts in the U.S., but just look up Evelyn Waugh, G.K. Chesterton, Ronald Knox, Malcom Muggeridge and so many more. They were men who studied Catholic doctrine so that they could prove it wrong, but were honest enough to admit the truth. You are displaying that same honesty. My prayers are with you as you continue to learn so many more wonderful things about the Church.

Matt and Cameron......I was brought up a nominal Catholic and then became an ardent Evangelical for 40 years. Then I began reading the Fathers with a group of Presbyterian Seminary graduates. Three of us became Orthodox and three of us Roman Catholic......me.....I went back to the Catholicism after 40 years as a pretty “engaged” Evangelical. It was like a time warp coming back. I do not regret the 40 years as an Evangelical. Evangelicals use song to praise the Lord much better than Catholics. I still say that Catholics forgot how to sing somewhere along their journey. One thing that helped me “revert” (I call it God calling me from one of his vineyards to another....at least to my close Evangelical friends). Let me say it was a frosty road for a while. What brought me back.....besides the witness of the Fathers? The Eucharist!!! When I first began venturing to Mass every time the priest would raise the consecrated host I would begin to weep. Somehow, I knew..... Blessings to you both!

Daniel Malone Jr. not even a Latin mass, but a well performed and engaged mass makes all the difference. Im not a traditionalist or a modernist, though I prefer chant and organ. But what I think Evangelicals understand better than Catholics is that the songs are for the praise of God, outside of personal preference. If most of us went into mass with that perspective and sing fully at every mass, chanted or with a rock band or just guitar, I would think we’d enjoy it more and be directed towards worship far above Evangelicals
@DanielMaloneJr
@DanielMaloneJr 4 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Gomez I completely disagree. I believe certain kinds of music are more CONDUCIVE to proper worship of God. Chant lifts our hearts up to God and the spiritual. Of course there are exceptions to this but that’s in spite of the chant not because of it. Modernist music is for entertainment and emotions not worship. The Church has always condemned this until post Vatican II

Protestants will make you a better Catholic because they will compel you, if you are serious about conversing with them and defending our Lord and Catholicism, to learn and live your faith to truly high degree; all while knowing your (Catholic) Bible much better. In doing so, you may realize as I did that many of them are wonderful at memorizing verses but terrible at taking them out of context to suit any argument that they like. Also, the King James version of the Bible when compared to Catholic translations has some very serious differences, even in single words, that greatly effect the lived faith for each group of believers. For example, the protestant bible says people can get divorced for adultery while ours says only if the marriage is unlawful. Words matter, especially since the word of God is living and active in the Bible and His word brought all things to life. In Christ, Andrew

I'm a Catholic, so..... The strongest argument against Catholicism by Protestant (or any other non Catholic, including atheista) is any doctrine infallibly define by the Church. Cameron Bertuzzi got it right on this. Catholic claims as the infallible Church with infallible teachings guarantee by the Holy Spirit. If any one of those defined teachings (not all teachings are defined and infallble teachings) is proven to be false then the Catholic Church falls. That is the weakest point for Catholicism and recognized by both Bertuzzi and Fradd. Even Fradd said to Bertuzzi that as a Protestant he (Bertuzzi) has much freedom. A Protestant can disbelieve Baptismal regeneration and still be a Protestant (to use Fradd's example). But a Catholic must believe all defined articles of faith, even the most obscure or of lesser important ones if he wants to continue being Catholic. If ask, what is the weakest defined teachings/article of faith,, in my personal opinion, I would suggest the immaculate conception. Now, what is Protestantatism weakest point? In my personal opinion there are two: 1. The fact that it started in the 16th century. 2. Sola Scriptura On the first one, I would always say that Christ founded the Church on the first century (Matt 16:18). So if your Church is not around during that time, it's not the Church that Christ built. If a Protestant would say that the Church apostasized somewhere along the way and revert back to faith, then he would be assuming that the Church built by God could apostasized, which is impossible. On the second one, the canon of scripture is not in either the Old Testament nor the New Testament. It has to be from somewhere else, and this violates Sola Scriptura. That is my take on it.

Absolutely right about confirmation bias. Most people who believe in God want God to exist, and most people who don`t don`t want him to exist, and we search out the information that confirms our desire. So true. Atheists are very dishonest though about the reasons they don`t believe. They never admit that it`s a matter of having to be accountable to a higher power for their life and how they live it. They want moral autonomy to a large extent, and to decide for themselves what is right or wrong according to their own moral compass. The "There is no evidence" argument is just utterly disingenuous, and they often oversimplify complex matters to arrive at such a viewpoint. For me personally, I want God to exist. I don`t want life to have no transcendent meaning or no value beyond what we subjectively give it. I also don`t want life to end at death, that is tragic for me. I also want justice done for those who have committed terrible acts of evil but have gotten away with it in this life. But regardless of all that, if the arguments for God`s existence are unconvincing, then I must abandon belief in God. For me, being reasonably intelligent, not a genius, not the sharpest or dullest tool in the box, the arguments for God`s existence are satisfactory. Furthermore, I have had extremely profound experiences of God in my life, and no one, and I mean NO ONE will ever convince me of the miraculous occurrence in my life. When Jesus comes and delivers you, you know it unequivocally.

I`m a catholic who abandoned/turned against Catholicism. I wasn`t happy to do so, but I did it because I thought that I had discovered information that successfully refuted and utterly demonized Catholicism. Later, I found that the knowledge that I had come across wasn`t quite what it seemed to be, and it was basically misinformation, conspiracy theories and straw man arguments. I admit, I lacked knowledge at the time, and obviously to some extent still do. Anyhow, I returned to Catholicism (I say returned, although I didn`t join a protestant church, I was just dead against Catholicism) and am totally comfortable in it. The point is, always follow the truth, even if it hurts to leave what you believed to be true. I will always follow where the information leads, and if information came to light once more refuting Catholicism, I would leave again. To date, no such information has come to light, and I`m always listening to what protestants have to say. This much is true though, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

There was a fascinating study done where they took atheists and Christians and instructed them to defend the opposing position to the best of their ability. Each side spoke anonymously and were evaluated on the strength and knowledge of the other side's position. Interestingly, Christians were overwhelmingly more capable of defending atheist viewpoints than atheists were of defending Christian beliefs. I need to go dig up the link to it, but it was a fascinating insight on how Christians are generally aware of atheist arguments but have overcome them, while atheists generally just dismiss Christian beliefs offhand without really trying to honestly consider them.

Lifelong Baptist turned Catholic here. I think there are a few different ways to talk about it. The best questions I have heard are “Where in the Bible does it say that the Bible is the sole, infallible rule of faith?”, “Who had the authority to decide on the books that are in your Bible, since the full contents of scripture are not laid out in scripture?”

It's not hard and doesn't need to be a stumbling block, because most of what we have in our additional 7 books can be found elsewhere in some fashion in their 66 books. There is of course the very short reference to praying for the dead that we have in Maccabees, with regards to purgatory, but there are places in the NT that are likely alluding to that as well. Regardless, purgatory should not be a doctrine that either church holds as essential and in effect exclusionary from coming together with the other. It should be explored between the two as "worthy of belief" but not required since everyone who goes to purgatory is already saved anyway. We should be arguing essential principals of salvation and not unessential personal preferences. In Christ, Andrew

@@chrispy4636 I'm being lazy, meaning not looking it up for you, but if you Google "all sin is wrongdoing but not deadly - bible" it should direct you to Saint Paul easy enough. Paul in that letter, to which community I don't remember, talks about all sin being wrong (doing) but not all deadly. Also, somewhere before or after he says that, he explains in detail pretty clearly what he means. If that doesn't help, or you can't find it, please respond back and I'll look it up and direct you more specifically. In Christ, Andrew

Not sure if your social media guy reports requests to you Matt, but here goes: follow the turtles. In a world where there’s always someone smarter who has the answer the only way to succeed in a project like this is to find the primal underlying assumption that can support the weight of the network of logical connections you’ve built on top of it. There can be any number of stones that are strong enough. Christ and him crucified obviously is the cornerstone. But in the papacy debate, for instance, look into the mystical void of personal experience (or some other such claptrap) and ask the absolute core of the question: Are all men created equal? Or is there a first among brothers? Follow those turtles. All the way down. God bless.

You have to be willing to give up the beauty, the reverence, the humbling genuflection and kneeling g to Jesus, we swear our legions to Jesus with every genuflect. Plus the highest torture, starvation of the Eucharist. To be able to eat.. consume as a Christ said His Body and Drink His blood is nourishment to my soul. You are after all what you eat❤️

Jaime Arviso yes, God is everywhere and should be worshiped everywhere, I have candles, a crucifix, etc where I worship Christ at home. But ONLY during the Eucharistic Liturgy of the Mass does heaven touch the alter and through transubstantiation does Christ’s body blood, soul and divinity presents itself into the host. Read up on “Eucharistic miracles”. In John 6 how many times does Jesus say we must eat his body and Drink his blood? He wasn’t just saying. Jesus meant what he said, said what he meant. Lost many followers. Jesus is present in the Host! Tha k you Jesus🥰

The Catholic understanding is that there was a Literal Adam and Eve. In Jesus' own words: "Have you not read that He who CREATED them from the BEGINNING made them male and female?" Adam and Eve were not conceived, but created without original sin. If they were conceived, then Mary would not be THE Immaculate Conception, but simply the Third Immaculate Conception.

My biggest issue with catholic faith ( grew up catholic) I use to always say this is just a pagan religion mix with jesus. I always felt like it was idol worship. After I realized they took that commandment out, the very pagan style rituals and things that I asked about, found the bible didnt say that. I have all my sacraments but walked away from the church long ago... practiced a bunch or pagan religions and then found my way back to jesus.

But I fear her family is just catholic by practice and, despite then being wonderful people, I wonder how their relationship with Christ actually is. What led you away from it, and what led you to Christ?

There is only one question that counts concerning what constitutes Christian orthodoxy. That question is "says who?" Catholics have a coherent answer to this question. Prods don't; It won't do to say the "Bible says." The Bible doesn't say anything. Among the Prod, pastor Joe says, "the Bible says thus and so." Pastor Bob says, "Pastor Joe is so misguided. Anybody can see that the Bible really says the opposite." If Catholics are right that the answer is, "says Holy Mother the Church," If the Prods are right, no question can ever be resolved.

My dilemma with the bias topic is are you really bias on truth? For example Jordan says 2+1 is 3, obviously. But Jake says “its 4, you’re just being bias” that is my problem with “positions” on things seeking truth, one position has to be truth. So how is that person who’s position is correct, Jordan saying 2+1 is 3 would be bias. Even further is bias necessarily bad, specially when the view is blatantly correct?

*One commonality between Catholic's and Protestants:* Both protestants and Catholic's have a bible with 27 New Testament writings, no more, no less, out of some 300+ early Christian writings, decided by late 4th century Catholic Bishops. *One Difference:* Catholic's trust that these very same Bishops got the Old Testament canon corrected, 46 writings. Protestants believe that they error'd and all Christianity error'd for the next 1100 years on this canon. To believe that the Church error'd on the latter, but got the former right is to be inconsistent. One should very much distrust the NT canon if they believe that the very same Church got the OT canon wrong. Neither list is found in scripture.

Ah , no @Matt Fradd - how come I ve missed that? I listen one i think protestant readung Old Testament but he tells me that I need to get away from the sort of satanic Catholic Church- he tells me that i m on a way to hell being in the Catholic CHurch , also that we worship Mary and she s only been a woman...so I asked if there was no Mary than Jesus wouldnt be born...so he told me that if there was no Mary than God would choose a different humbe woma....so we back to the square one: Protestants hate Mary- they say that God would choose a different woman to give birth to Jesus ...so they would hate her too... If God chose for example not Miriam/Mary but Sarah or Helen....than Protestants would hate them too accusing catholics to follow a wrong religion and worshiping in that subject Virgin Sarah or Virgin Helen ???? yes ? If God chose a girl name Sarah so we would have no Virgin Mary but Virgin Sarah-Mother of God - and Protestants would not like her too - same like they dont like Virgin Mary- so their arguments are not good- Its really sad that they dont like Virgin Mary so much- Jesus loved His MOther and He still loves Her the same so out of respect for Jesus - we,ordinary people should love what Jesus loves...yes?

Although they are not Catholic, Protestants need much prayer because they want to love as much as any of us. Jesus wants all of us to get to get to heaven. Blessed mother and all the saints and angels I. Heaven, pray for us. Souls in purgatory, pray for us. Sacred heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
