Hey Emma. My niece has severe bottle and breast aversion. She only takes while asleep but she cannot drink enough milk because of sleep. We tried everything available on internet, KZbin , we made her starve then she took bottle but she takes small amount of milk. Please make a video on it.

Thank you, this is the first bit of information that’s made me feel better about my baby’s cat napping. Every other source told me if I didn’t start getting her to link sleep cycles the 4 month sleep regression will be worse! I’m been trying my hardest to get her to go back to sleep but it doesn’t always happen.

Thank you for this! First time mom to a 5 month old. I am so tired of all these so called sleep specialist touting how you should ignore your baby to “train” them before 6 months old to sleep. I can attest, that it DOES really get a little better. We have been going on 5 months of extreme sleep deprivation, crying, whining, FIGHTING sleep etc. our baby is changing and it’s just waiting for them to develop.

The best advice anyone can give when it comes to raising babies and having a happy home is "do not worry about unsolicited advice from people who mean well." Because truly the fact is if those people are having any kind of issue, especially when it comes to sleep training a newborn, they will not be able to give good advice. I have 2 boys and I'm about to have my third baby, I ha e heaps of nieces and nephews and therefore a broad range of experiences to compare. I never had sleep issues with my kids, I think it's because I learned their sleep cues and followed my instincts. That's what worked for me in my situation. But I have plenty of people offering advice for things they are having issues with, because they are all going through or have gone through sleep related issues. No one will know your baby better than you and no one will be able to understand your situation better than you so trust your instincts, ask for specific advice from the right people when you need it, but unsolicited advice like "try driving around for a few minutes" may not work for your baby, and it can create a whole new issue for them. Stay calm and take each day as it comes

Such a useful video. Thanks Emma! The only way I've figured for my baby to sleep longer than 30 min during her first nap is if I lay down with her, and if I try to leave she wakes up 😭. Any tips for her to sleep longer without me by her side?

thanks!! My MIL insists that my 3M old should sleep in bright room with a looot of noise (like, the TV on, etc.) which enfuriates me, bc my baby sleeps so much better naps in her dark room with a white noise machine, to avoid my dog's barks wake her. I'm trying to implement a pseudo nap schedule and also a routine, but she still has cat naps for the time being, which is exhausting but I know it's normal...

I would have loved to have seen videos like this but with the premature baby in mind. My identical twins were born at 27.5 weeks gestation and of course lived in the NICU for their first 3 months of life. Having some videos like this but aimed more toward babies like ours would have been so wonderful and comforting. Still love watching your videos and learning all these years later! 💙💚

Videos are a great consumable length without cruft and that’s really appreciated! Also, I wanted to say thanks for addressing moms and dads! We have a nice dark quiet bedroom for baby to sleep in, but every time we try to put him to bed during the day he screams bloody murder :) I could count on 1 hand the times he actually managed to fall asleep in his crib. The only way he sleeps during the day is if we put him in the stroller and go for a walk. I would walk past a busy road, primary school with screaming children, a construction site, and he'd just sleep through all this noise. I'll try showing him this video, maybe he will finally get what we want from him 😂

Thanks for the tips! My 5-month-old has had a great nap routine up until about a week ago. He used to take one long (2 1/2 - 3 hr) nap in the afternoon and little catnaps before and after, but he's suddenly gone back to only catnaps. I haven't changed anything, so hoping it's just a phase and he takes up the long afternoon nap again! (Think he will??) The one tip I've had a hard time with is consistent morning wake-up time, simply because *I* like to sleep in as late as he'll let me. ;) But perhaps it's time to start a consistent morning wake-up, even if it means an early day for me! :) So glad I found your channel! Thank you!

you are so lucky to have long naps until 5 months🥲 my two and a half months started to catnap three weeks ago, nothing seems to work to help her go back to the old routine,not even consistency in waking up in the morning, I talked to a friend who's baby is one years old, she said to me that once her baby started catnapping never stopped this behavior, I'm starting to accept that. How things went for you? any improvement?

I have 3 babies. They all cat napped from birth. Nothing I ever did fixed it. Now with my third, the only thing that has fixed it is just not caring haha I think I can just see the bigger picture and how quickly it goes. Eventually they don’t nap at all and it doesn’t matter anymore.

Came back here to tell that my babies started sleeping longer during the days. It's 1-2 hours, twice. They just did when they turned 7 months. We did nothing other than usual routine. BUT be careful what you wish for. The longer they sleep at day the shorter at nights. They used to sleep from 7 to 7. Now they not only more restless at night (they need one more feeding, 3 times total) but are awake and resistant to sleep further at 5am or even fewer. It's so effed up & I hate it! Wish they'd go back to catnaps.

wow glad that I read this because my 3 months old does catnaps during the day though sleeps through the night from 6pm - 6 am and one feeding and he’ll sleep again from around 7am - 9/10am and catnaps onwards till again 6pm. and wondering If I should change anything to get him sleep longer during the day but now that I read this I think I prefer the way it is now than having him naps longer but doesn’t sleep well at night.

YAY! Thank yoU! My question is though- if babies only wake for hunger, dirty, or no longer tired- how do I know if that's the case and I should go to her, rather than leave her to settle herself? Will she just continue to cry? I just hate to leave her crying if she's crying for a need- but then I don't want to wake her if she's still working through her sleep cycle.

Nighttime is a toss up, some nights she does better with her arms out and can get back to sleep within 30 min, but more nights where nothing works(swaddle using wraps, halo, nested bean or arms out)and takes more more than 2 hrs to get her to sleep, then she ends up mostly drowsy the next day where it’s a struggle to keep her awake. Also, I haven't really been putting my boy down drowsy (he is unfortunately a bit dependent on the breast to fall asleep, something I will do differently with the next baby, and I plan to wait until he's past this big 4 month developmental stage before changing his sleep) Any further tips for laying them down drowsy but awake? How do I know when to lay them down...after 5mjn, 10min of them falling asleep in my arms but not being in a deep sleep, how do avoid waking him and having to start the whole process over again and making him overtired etc? Thank you!😊

I used a heating pad to warm the mattress from age 4 to 7 months, which helped her fall asleep in that initial sleepy, but still awake cycle. I hope this helps!

Hi Saemi, glad you were able to watch this video too and it was helpful. 5-10 minutes should be long enough at this age. Catnapping is very normal at this age and unfortunately it is typical behaviour until 5 months. Catnapping is very hard, as a parent found it so frustrating. She will develop the skill to link her sleeps, as she can already fall asleep on her own and is sleeping in a dark bedroom. If you don’t have a white noise machine I would recommend getting one of those too.

My baby cat naps, he started at about 3 months. He is 3 months and two weeks now. I wouldn't have a problem with catnapping but he wakes up clearly tired. Is it OK to try and put him back to sleep?

She use to nap Very well, I'v done everything from the environment until playing more, feeding close to the nap time.I had respected the awake windows, she fall asleep very easily, but nothing seems to work anymore to help my baby link sleep cycles. This is the new normal? any other tips? I have a friend who's baby is one years old and never come back to nap more than 30/45 minutes. It's kind of scary

My baby is 5 months and doesn’t really get drowsy until he has missed his naps. I try to put him down sleeping or drowsy but nothing works sometimes so he just doesn’t sleep for over 8hrs until bed time. Also, he is super energetic and maybe this is why I can’t tell that he’s drowsy compared to when he was a newborn.

We had the same thing with our 5 month old too and it turns out his tired cues are very subtle - one yawn or one rubbing of eyes. If we don't put him to bed then he can stay awake the whole day (and get more cranky as the day progresses). We now offer each time we see a clue and he consistently naps around 11am then 2pm at least. Also there is the 2-3-4 rule: try sleep times respectively 2, 3, then 4 hours after the last time baby woke up. So for a wake up at 9am that's a nap offered at 11, 14h30, ad bedtime at 19h. It's unlikely baby will stick to those times out of the blue but they are a good tool for parents to know when to look for sleep clues more attentively!

Your baby is probably stuck in an overtired cycle. You need to break it, it's very difficult. I had the same issue earlier on. Basically if baby looks wide awake but you know he is tired persist with naptime! They have "false energy" when they are overtired, then scream then crash it's not healthy. I used to spend 20-25mins settling my baby to sleep and if he wasn't quiet in the crib or at drowsy I'd do 10-15mins more playtime and try again. Goodluck x

@@Yakumoki Yes, know he gets over tired and I try my hardest to make him go down for his naps. It’s harder because we breast feed and cosleep so it takes a lot to get him to actually sleep alone when he does nap. I now try to lay with him for a few minutes until he seems like he’s in deep sleep. Hopefully, once he’s in his own room he breaks this habit.

My son napped like a champ until about 4months. He's 5 months now. Idk if I can let him cry for 60min😔 which I've seen suggested. right now he gets up at 7. he's stuck in 2-3 30-40 min naps and one 1.5-2 hr nap. Also, if I put him down before 8:30 he wakes up 20- 30 min later crying and has to be soothed. I've let him cry up yo 30 mim and he doesn't go back to sleep.A few times he has done 2 2 hr naps and 1 30 min which is the goal, but for the last couple weeks I can't get him to consistently do the desired schedule. I've tried so many things. I started sleep training around 1.5 months and in a few days he had it down and was sleeping through the night. I already keep him up for 2 hours and sometimes more to b sure he's tired, his room is dark, we have a sound machine, the temperature is regulated. I'm open to ANY suggestions.

If it's possible can you give me a poiner on fow to do that efficiently?

My baby starts to cry if I bring her to the bedroom during the day. She apparently thinks that the bedroom + crib means long sleep and she doesn't want that 🤦🏻‍♀️has been like this since the beginning and she's 4m.o. now. No idea what to do, she's napping 30 mins to 1h in the living room and we have to tiptoe around even with the white noise.

Hi, baby is currently 1.5 months old and I have given her Pumped breastmilk through a bottle until now due to baby being a preterm and needed to get minimum certain ounces of milk per feed. So, does giving pumped milk through bottle and directly through breast in the same day cause nipple confusion in the long term? Will my baby latch on the breast later when I don't have to measure and her weight is normal?? What if she doesn't? What should I do then?

My baby had an issue starting at 13 weeks. Before i would feed him to sleep. Maybe 10min after i put him down and he stayed asleep for the rest of the night minus 1 dream feed. Nothing about our routine changed at 13 weeks Minus that i started working. He wouldn't have been able to hear my work stuff. But 10-40 min after he was put down he would wake up. So far after 2 weeks of experimenting the only thing that prevents it is if i lay with him until the 40min passes. it seems like my presence helps him link the sleep cycle, ive seen his eyes flickering while i waited. He sleeps very soundly the rest of the night. Im pretty sure he has woken in the middle of the night before occasionally but i notice after 10 min or so he stops moving so i assume he fell back asleep on his own. Would that be considered part of a sleep regression?

Hi, my baby girl is 3.5 months. She sleeps well through the night (with feeds in between but she falls asleep as soon as she havms eaten) but during the day she catnaps for 30 minutes with 1.5 - 2h breaks in between. Is this possible she can link cycles at night and not during the day?

Hi Veronica yep that is totally possible. My kids were great sleepers at night ( just waking for a feed and then straight back to bed) but in the day started catnapping from 3.5months until 5.5months. Catnapping is exhausting but it is developmentally normal.

And if baby become hysterical as soon as you start a sleep routine. Any time I close down the blinds or darken the room for sleep, crying increases. Seems to become distressed anything I do anything “routine” to get ready for sleep during the day and will battle until he can’t keep his eyes open any longer. Yet to get him to fall asleep in the crib 😂😅

Hi, my baby boy is going to be 4 months. He cries a lot when he is sleepy. We put him in a swing , although he cries initially he does goes to sleep for a 30 mins nap. But as soon as he wakes up he again starts crying , so loud tat our neighbours can hear him. Even if we swing him he doesn't goes back to sleep. Why does he cry so much before and after sleep.wat can I do to help him. Tried keeping the room dark, white noice. Nothing seem to work. it breaks my heart to see him cry.
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard 3 жыл бұрын
HI Sindhuja, it is so hard to hear your own baby crying. Sounds like sleep is distressing for you both. The good news is that sleep patterns start to emerge at 4/5 months which means it becomes more predictable. As I can't see you little one I can only guess why he is becoming upset before and after sleep. He might be getting too tired- so make sure you give him an opportunity to sleep after being awake for 2 hours. Babies are easily overstimulated so it is important to continue to have him sleep in a dark room with white noise. It also sounds like he is having catnaps which is normal at this age. Therefore after he wakes from the nap I would pick him up and start the day routine (feed, change nappy, play time then bed).

I don't think catnapping is typically at that age no. I'd check to make sure baby is eating enough per meal and is able to sleep without disruptions. I doubt anything is wrong you probably just need to adjust something. Maybe you need to hold your LO to sleep, put a timer on for 20mins then out her down to sleep VERY GENTLY. I had to do that for awhile otherwise my son kept waking up. 20mins they go into a deep sleep so it's easier to put them down to sleep
