I have been running one for Ames const. for two seasons now and love it. More power to the ground than you can imagine! 4100 hours on it now and no trouble with electric drive. Only issues have been a lot of emission issues. Regen/Def issues. The turning while pushing dirt is also very impressive. Nice machine

@@blessed7fold have had I think four def pumps put in. Most recently had not used any def for over a week but no codes then it went into limp mode. Replaced the def injector and did some software updates and is fine now. Another issue I experienced is the cable that goes to the blade sensor for the gps. Dirt chunks come over the top of the blade and land on the cable and break it. Of course parts are hard to come by during these covid times and it's 1000 dollars a pop. Two cables last year and 4 this year.

Mike. Are you still operating an electric drive dozer?

I am not currently running the d-6xe electric. It got sent to a job in California cause that project needed to fulfill certain emissions standards. Just running a mechanical d-6 now.

Why did they drop the electric drive in the new D7 and also go back to the Hi Drive and a conventional transmission, if electric drive was so good why go back .

What are the advantages and disadvantages of an electric drive over a hydraulic drive?

immediate power availability at final drive and more torque with less engine output

I’m confused on what function the electric drive gives if there’s still a diesel engine? Is it just less load on the engine itself because other components use the EM?

How reliable would the electric drives be under constant load; compared to the old direct drives?
@briananderson178110 ай бұрын
So has anyone at Caterpillar performed a feasibility study comparing operation of one large tractor such as a D8 or D9 to two smaller tractors connected in tandem such as two D6 tractors with one blade and operator? The electronic controls on such a machine like this would make control of two machines from one operator station being a plug and play with a drawbar connection being the only physical linkage. It could be a way to get around special transportation permitting.

How much will this cost to fix once it starts to have problems

This transmission is not new just more modern application of an electric transmission. Thomas Tilling introduced the first petrol-electric bus in London in 1908 and a small batch was produced in 1911. They were produced by Tilling in Peckham with electrical equipment by W. A. Stevens of Maidstone. The buses ran on electric motors powered by a petrol generator. This example is from the second generation of these buses, which were introduced in 1921. The Museum only holds the engine, generator and chassis. The body was lost when the bus was converted into a generator in 1938.

So how does it steer with only one electric drive motor? Braking one track would be inefficient and that approach wouldn't allow counter rotation.
@CatProducts5 жыл бұрын
Hi James! The single electric motor powers both final drives. This gives you the same turning power and differential steering capability as with a traditional transmission, but with constant push and greater efficiency.
@patrickbolin65695 жыл бұрын
@Kathleen Shaw it's not that, has to do with size of engine they run, limits how big of genset you can run. Smaller the machine, smaller engine, smaller generator. Smaller drive motor. I'm pretty confident cat engineers work with kirchhoffs laws designing this to create max performance.
