When I picked my cat up I firmly hold my cat with her 4 legs stablet. Giving her the feeling of control. I can see now it was all wrong and she didn’t enjoy it. I had control taken from her control. My cat is now 11 years old. I hope it’s not too late for I can show her she is in control and start to like it. Thank you. From me and mostly from Kissa.

I've picked up cats who, according to their owner, are notorious for not liking to be picked up. And they would stay there and just chill, to the utter surprise of their owner. The key is to pick them up as a toddler. Put their front paws on your shoulder and let their hind paws sit on your hip/side. Then put one arm under their butt to support their weight. That way, they can feel stable while still being held. Plus, you'll have one hand free to do whatever with.

Important to note: If you are raising your cat from a kitten, especially if it is a tomcat, the easiest way to make sure you have a holdable cat in the future, is to pick them up and hold them each and every day while they are still a kitten. Eventually you can Skip days, and have them still accept the way you are comfortable holding them. Thanks for the video!
@christine-kht3 ай бұрын
^ THIS. I hate myself for messing this up. Even as a kitten she hated being picked up and I wasn't persistant enough. Nowadays she hates it too and it's really hard to get her into the carrier to go to the vet or something - it's horrible. Your advice is a good one - be persistant in the beginning. x.x
@kevinquinn19933 ай бұрын
@@christine-kht 0h, don't hate yourself, dear! We all make mistakes... For kitten training, I hold it for a little while just once a day, but everyday. One hand under the chest holding the front legs, the other hand under the bottom, (tail forward,)holding the back legs, cradling the kitten to your chest. When she eventually struggles to free her legs, you just hold them a little tighter so she knows she's unable to do so. Then you wait for a moment when she's not struggling to put her down (so she doesn't associate struggling with getting down.) When being held in this position as an adult cat, it does not feel insecure and has no fear of falling. For pet carriers, I have had some success with introducing the carrier to the cat's normal environment during times that it's not going to be used. You can try leaving it somewhere with the door open and a towel folded up inside and see if the cat might use it for an alternative bed, or you can try leaving treats up inside the back of it (with no towel inside.) You may be fortunate enough to be able to close the door behind it when it's time to go to the vet, or at least make it more comfortable with the carrier. For cats who are very difficult to get into the carrier, I have had some success with standing the carrier on its end with the door open, picking the cat up by the scruff of the neck (this will trigger their kitten instinct to draw their legs and tail up and be docile like they do when being carried about by their mother,) then you lower the cat about halfway into the carrier, drop it in and quickly shut the door and latch it. Talk sweetly to it while you do so. Hope this helps. God Bless You ☺

One is the biggest cuddly sweetheart, but she starts to make very scared noises as soon as she is being picked up, and after a few seconds she starts to thrash around, still wailing and finally scratching if not put down onto the ground. I can pick my cat up as long as she is able to see something interesting, like looking out a window or walking around looking at the counter or table. Other than that she wants down. Likes to be in control. If I used treats she probably would stay but then she would beg. And she can be quite insistent, which could be annoying. I’ll just pick her up and when she wants down she jumps right down. Maybe after awhile she will get to like it, 🤷♀

Yeah, mine sometimes like it, sometimes not, but they're generally more receptive if I walk around rather than just stand in one place. I don't think they're uncomfortable in my case, I think they just get bored with it fast and are quickly ready to move on to something else. They're also more receptive if I carry them in the direction they were planning on going anyway. Which I can usually figure out just because I'm apparently better at understanding cats than humans

@@CatSchool why do cats do this? I see so many that are cuddling in bed with their human and on the shoulder without training. This cat I’ve had since she was a few weeks old is very attached to me and we’re bonded but picking her up is an absolute NO for her. She follows me walks next to me sleeps above my head on my bed and strangely taught me she only wants fresh bottled water no stale water bowls. So when she wants water she goes to the fridge and I get her bottle of eat and she starts drinking. This goes on several times a day so I just bought her a drinking fountain that runs fresh water and has a faucet water runs constantly from. I can’t wait for her to see it. And I can’t wait to stop breaking my back spoiling my cat. I wouldn’t want to drink the same water out of the same bowl every day but somehow we expect animals too. My cat isn’t having it.

We have a cat that adopted us when we lived in an RV park. We fed him and loved on him. The owners didn't want him and let him roam free outside. I have 2 other cats (female) so we were a little cautious. We went to Hawaii on vacation and said if he is still around when we get back then we will take him to the vet and get him vaxed and then eventually neutered. It has been about 4 yrs now and he doesn't like to be held, and I just want to cuddle him so much. When we first met him, we thought he was Siamese, but as the months went on, he got big and fluffy. We did a DNA test and he has 10% mainecoon and more the ragdoll type. The vet thought I had a different cat. His name is Walter, and my other 2 are Maui and Hana. Do you really think he will start to like to be held if I do these steps? Since he was a wild cat, I'm thinking he will always be on guard. He is 17 lbs and fluffy. Me and my husband want so badly for him to cuddle and let us hold him.

I'm probably going to have to do this with a cat I recently adopted from a shelter. we don't know much about him besides he's about 7 years old, and that his former owner returned him after 7 years because of illness they were dealing with. I know it hasn't even hit the month mark yet but i don't think he was regularly picked up or has had his nails trimmed at home, as they are quite long and he doesn't really want me touching them or picking him up in general. i haven't had to deal with this as the other cats I've had in my life were either already used to being handled or we got them young enough for us to get them used to it. i know how to trim his claws, he just will not let me. he does not seem to be aggressive about it, as when I pet him he pushes his head against my hand and moves his head toward my hands whenever i try to just gently hold his paws, and even follows me all around the house when I'm doing something just meowing, and even jumps up onto chairs or tables so he's at petting level, he is apparently comfortable enough with me to where he rolls onto his back and shows me his belly, but lets out a small hiss if I try to gently pick him up. i don't know what happened at his old home for him to behave this way, but he is a very sweet cat otherwise. i just don't want his nails to get so long that they start to hurt him. I'm pretty sure he has a small scab on the side of his head/neck from when he itches himself with his back feet claws which are pretty sharp. sorry about writing this novel yall, I just wanted to get this out somewhere.

Great question and you're right - we could use clicker training for those first two steps because you are teaching your cat an action (two paws on the shoulder). However, as soon as you touch the cat's hind end (in step 3), you would be switching to counter conditioning. Since the overarching goal is changing the cat's feelings, I chose to focus more on that and reserve the clicker training for the end.

Switch to using a lickable treat like Inaba Churu purée or wet food on a spoon. The food needs to be delivered with the cat in the position. Try feeding them on your lap first before working on carrying them. For more support, please consider joining our online program.

My cats struggle with plucking the treat from my fingers, they will sometimes drop it on the ground and eat it from there or plainly give up, has anyone got any tips for this?

Any suggestions for training a cat that doesn't like treats? My cat has no interest in treats. In fact, she doesn't like anything outside of her dry food

Sorry if I missed it, but what is the name of the treats you are using here?

You might be referring to the Inaba Churu Puree.

im so glad one of my cats just loves being picked up without any training. For the other two.... one is a bit too fat to be just picked up by the underside ( rightfully it compresses her too much), so it never happens that way (while the other has no problem with the underside grab, as hes very lean and fit, i suspect hes part ragdoll XD), and she is too stubborn for tricks, we are still trying to teach her to press the button, as se just taps it and doesnt compress it. The other one, i suspect she has a sensitivity to touch, as she is long furred and its hard to tell if everything is allright under there. Unfortunately this last cat isnt under my care, but my grandmas, so i cant really do anything about it...

I have a question about your training program. Does it have some sort of recommended progression for training? I thought my cat how to sit relatively easily. I the. Tried to teach him to sit pretty but he always grabs my arm instead of balancing just on his two hind paws. I'm not sure if the trick is too difficult and I should be trying a simpler one.

Yes, the online class is more of a training roadmap. Building balance in Sit Pretty takes time. Try feeding your cat with wet food on a spoon, as I show here on this Instagram post: instagram.com/reel/CNm5DFXgGAz/?

What treats do you give your cats as a lot of treats have high fat value and make the cat overweight.

What should I do if my cat bites/hits me? Should we stop the training session altogether and try again at a different time? I want to teach her that biting will not be rewarded and promote more desirable behaviors

Your cats like eating from your hands but some cats just don’t like that, so how does this work,

You see I’m trying the steps, putting the treat on my arm but you see he doesn’t notice where the treat is whatever I do. I snap as well
