This song was recorded by Natalie before any of the other songs were recorded -- very early in production. We thought the movie and this song would be hits. Randy Newman even thought this would be bigger than his work on "Toy Story". It's all about publicity...

Sawyer's expressions before this song speak volumes. When I saw this while I was really young, I always knew there was something deep going on there even when I didn't understand what it was. She's got every right to complain with her friends on how much Danny made their lives worse, and yet she can't bring herself to do it. Because even though it ended horribly, Danny didn't stop fighting for what he wanted. He even made a compromise with the enemy. He didn't know the way things worked around there, but Sawyer doesn't care. She knows how it feels to get your heart broken and your dreams cast out by the mere prejudice and stupidity of others. It's seeped into her and her friends' life patterns and dimmed down their spirits so much, long before Danny even came into the picture. They've numbed themselves to the disappointment, so it doesn't hurt as much, but it's not truly being happy, or living a purposeful life. She knows that her and her friends' approach to their lives, bitterly accepting their bad luck, is no better than being shamed for just following what you love, and they were never better off without Danny. She's tired of being discouraged and being stuck in the same cycle. She wants the wonder and joy that Danny brought with him wherever it went, but she was too scared to open herself up to get hurt or rejected again, just like almost every animal in Hollywood. This song is when she finally overcomes that fear and decides that she's willing to put up with the pain as long as she can be happy doing what she loves. Wow, I love realizing how deep animated movies can get sometimes.

Thank you all so much for the great replies! I've got a follow-up observation too: After Sawyer's done singing, Tilly's been outside listening and obviously enchanted with her friend's revelations. And instead of being mad at her for pining over the cat she was just bad-mouthing three minutes ago, she tells her friend to go get him with no sarcasm or even a hint of disapproval. Ladies and Gentlemen, if that's not true friendship, I don't know what is.

This song makes me cry; for all the many years I’ve known and loved this movie, and come to learn of all the talented people who came to work on it, and the fate of the film itself due to the lack of advertising for it, it’s ironic that the film itself is about Hollywood and the dreams it can build and even shatter.

@@Joshua_Quinzel_Isley not really the production crew itself. The animators, and people who made the movie itself obviously poured their hearts out making it. But the Turner/Warner merger happened, and corporate WB didn't think people would be interested in this or the Iron Giant, and so didn't advertise these movies. Hence why they both bombed even though they are both animation classics.

Tell me lies And I'll come runnin' I must have lost my mind! I could close my eyes And tell you just exactly what's comin' Life's gonna turn just a little unkind Seems like everyone's sailin' Way out on the sea And I'm stuck here on the shore Sun's always shinin' But it's never on me Why should I try anymore? Tell me lies Tell me lies And I'll just keep right on comin' This time I've got to believe in the dream This time I've got to believe in his dream

It's actually really funny they chose to use the wizard of Oz; if you read Wicked (it's a canon prequel) then there's actually a whole thing about racism against animals (just like in Cats Don't Dance). It plays a LARGE role in the creation of Elphaba, who became the wicked witch of the west.
