This video had all my favorite things! Every video with Hillarie is great because that is when the real you comes out, then we had a "Cmon cows' scene, a great scene where your Dad got to show who he was, a section about nuance, a bad joke bit, a section about cooking simply, and a snarky Q&A section. Brilliant - A+ on all points!

I helped my uncle put in crates for his sow's and he lost just as many piglets. We took them out a year later and he finished out his farming without them. We lost him this past year at age 95 but his farm is living on with new farmer raising soybean and corn. Have a good day!

I used crates and didn't lose any piglets. Through 8 litters. The crates just help momma laying down by being able to lean against side and lower herself rather than fall on her side. It is no problem at all letting mom out to stretch several times a day she goes rite back in no problem. Put your crate at opening of baby pen when you take mom out she backs out in to a different pen. She will be back wanting back in crate to babies in just couple minutes.

We had a farrowing barn that had crates on one side and pens on the other. We let the sows out of the crates and pens twice a day to feed and water. They knew which one had their pigs, so was easy to put them back in. In summer, we had small A frame sheds that we put out in the pasture that acted as both a crate and a pen. The biggest downside was the sows weren’t handled as much, so could be more aggressive protecting their pigs. One sow attacked Dad when we were giving her pigs their iron shots. Bit his leg and laid him up for a couple of weeks. Got to respect them. Really enjoy your videos.

We had a 10 crate farrowing barn in the 80s and early 90s. 5 crates on each side of a hallway and a pen at the end of the building to let them out in. Most sows were very good about wanting to go back to their crates. We did the same letting them out for awhile each day to feed, water and get some exercise. The crates had waterers also.

Enjoy your father & mom for all they did for you and your family, and enjoy them more for remaining active and healthy as well ;-) I ad neighbors that have been there since my dad built our home in 1975, they were always active helping each other and the neighbors, never asked for anything, since we were in the garage door business they hadn't paid for repairs or installs for 50 years with us. When we needed the roof redone or neighbors, we were and are always there to help in any way we can ;-)
