Sudden compression of the nerves in the back leads to severe back pain, urine and bowel control problems. It can happen as a result of herniated disc or other causes. This is a neurosurgical emergency that requires urgent surgery to relieve the pressure off the nerves.

I waited over a day before I went to the hospital. I live in the States, so going to the hospital is expensive. After I finally did go in, I had the surgery immediately, but the surgeon said the herniated disc was MASSIVE, the biggest he'd seen in the 8 years he's been doing the surgery. They had to take out basically all of the disc tissue. He even sent me a picture because he couldn't believe how much he had to remove. He said my lumbar spine is just bone on bone now, and a spinal fusion is inevitable. Sadly, it looks like s full recovery is not in my future. I do tell everyone I know about it and the symptoms, though. I don't know, I guess I think more awareness about the symptoms will prevent others from waiting so long like I did. Because having to have a wheelchair to leave the house is very inconvenient if you don't have to use one. (Very convenient if you have extensive nerve damage, however.)

I got diagnosed with adhesive Arachnoiditis in February. My MRI showed clumping of cauda equina nerve roots in distal lumbar. I have almost 45 days I don’t remember because the pain was so severe in my right foot and leg. The burning, sharp pains and shocks were excruciating and didn’t stop. I had S/I joint fusion surgery in December from Dr at Stanford. He would not address the issue. It was my primary who ordered the MRI. I wonder if maybe something would have been done when that started I might have a better prognosis. It is progressing and getting very difficult to live with the pain.

With Cauda Equina, is there always saddle anesthesia, or is it more a potential symptom ?

If it is diagnosed CES the clock is ticking, the longer you wait the worse it gets. Nomally it is an emergency operation. I was operated on within 36 hours and am now mostly okay. If you wait you’ll potentially have worse issues after the operation. Blader control, loss of leg function, sexual function ect

@@edmacfarlane9483I suffered for 7 days before I went to the hospital, then had my emergency surgery about 12 hours later. I do have permanent nerve damage. I never regained 100% of my feeling from the saddle anesthesia. I'd say I have about 85% of my feeling. I also have pain, weakness down my left leg, drop foot, and very obnoxious electrical feelings in my left leg. I'm more fortunate than many, because I could be incontinent and unable to walk. I'm screaming the warning...if you have symptoms, get treated immediately!!! If I had gone to the hospital sooner, I would most likely be in better condition now.
