Around 11:00pm, Houston Fire responded to a reported house fire on Colquitt St. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and fire showing from a two story unoccupied building. Ammo could be heard popping off inside early on as more firefighters started arriving. As firefighters approached to make a fire attack, an explosion occurred near the rear of the residence. Firefighters started to knock down the flames and were still hitting hot spots 45 minutes into the fire.
Houston Fire Arson is on scene for the investigation.

For those who are questioning why the Fire Fighters were so lazy and care-free: - This was an Arson Fire on an abandoned building. At that point, save resources, let it burn, don't risk anything more than you have to in an abandoned building fire. They're using what they can to suppress it until it burns out so it doesn't affect neighboring buildings. - According to the description, Ammunition was heard going off within the building. If that's the case, it surely shouldn't be blamed that they weren't going near the building. It's understandable, and this was likely a crime-ridden house. - It's not like some of them aren't to blame. Some of them are just standing around, looking around and talking for absolutely no reason. *Not all of them are at fault, but some of them could've been doing more.* Another thing to check is that there's absolutely *no sources provided* on this incident except for a brief description. I've researched and can't find anything on a fire from Colquitt Street in Houston. To note, this fire likely didn't happen recently. This, according to comments and lack of recent documentation, probably happened years back. Times change, people change. It solely depends on training. TL;DR not all firefighters were at fault, some were doing their jobs. Others were, indeed, just slacking off doing nothing. Credit those who did do their jobs.

I disagree the second their feet hit the ground they should’ve been putting water on that fire. They wasted a lot of time. OK it was an abandoned building it’s still had a chance of spreading by exposure. To me the water should’ve been on the fire as soon as your boots at the ground and hoses were laid

...They often do that in Detroit - the "Let it Burn" policy... If it's not a threat to anything inhabited around it, why risk lives and damage to equipment knocking it down? Take your time... Besides, it's cheaper for the city to cart away burned out debris and rubble than to demolish a vacant structure... In Detroit however, there are so many neighborhoods of nothing but vacant derelicts, that an arsonist could touch off a whole city block, and it STILL wouldn't threaten anything inhabited!

This part of Houston is near the central business district has been gentrified. There is new construction all around the house. You could see that when the camera caught the corner of the building that was to the right of the fire building. This fire must have been awhile back, because this location has two new structures where that house was. I bet neighbors were glad to see that go. Almost as much as the developers were.

I thought I knew all the hazards that FFs face. Flashovers, ceiling collapses, smoke inhalation, burns/scalding, wall collapses, explosions from propane/oxygen tanks, etc. but now I have to add one more: exploding ammo! Strange enough in a normal house but in an abandoned building it is terrifying. Anyone, including children, exploring an empty building, (and we all know how irresistible that is) could have come on that ammo or whatever caused the explosion. Thank goodness no one was hurt and it all ended well but a scary day for some FFs for sure.

It's called a "let it burn" policy. It's a run down uninhabited structure. They let it burn down and simply protect the nearest inhabited structures and utility lines. Since this has burned down, two new homes were built and moved in to. They know what they are doing, unlike you.

10 to 12 firefighters walk back and forth there. 1 hose is laid for extinguishing after 2 minutes and maybe even longer nothing happens. then an explosion . then they begin to take action. In europoa (Germany, the Netherlands) the Fire Brigade comes and immediately starts extinguishing with the water they have in the fire truck.Which means that a lot of minutes are saved. In America, they first start by laying out hoses, organizing how things are going to go on, and then they actually start putting out the fire. The houses are in most cases made of wood. So that burns much faster. So as a fire brigade, you have to act much faster. I think the U.S. Fire Department is concerned that if there's a fire, they wait so long that it doesn't take longer than it needs to.

Abandoned house that's been intentionally set on fire. If I had to guess, I'd say this fire dept. has been to this same house 2 or 3 other times when it was set on fire. Today they happen to be employing a tactic that I believe was started in Detroit called LIB or "let it burn". These abandoned homes cannot be brought back up to code are incredibly dangerous and the city is letting the fire do its job and the firefighters are protecting exposures (buildings next to the fire ground). A lot of comments are slamming these firefighters but the reality is the commenters are the ignorant ones-not HFD

People have no idea how firefighters work and assess dangerous situations. Lots of stupid comments here, since you all know so much how about you put it out yourself?

OK theybhave eyes they see what they are saying. No urgency to put the fire out. I see alot things they could have done differently . Was a volunteer firefighter. So yeah.

Why was the Fire Department called? They could have just as easily 'Walked in Circles' from the convenience of their Fire Station and wouldn't have had to even 'Suit Up' ! AND, they could have watched the fire on the 'ONSCENE TV' Newscast just like you and me ! And.... as a Bonus..... They would have also saved money on Diesel Fuel !

Would have been a cheaper clean up if they were not called. I’m sure whoever owns the property was glad it burned. That’s a free clean up so they can build something new . Collect insurance on the old !!! Money in the bank!! In the fire service this type of house burning is called urban renewal!!

Another flop on the table, slow water moving, took too long for crews to battle the fire. Get more training!

Houston has plenty of training and experience. They are known for being extremely aggressive. My guess is there was some kind of water/pump issues.

Damn they're just standing around playing with themselves. Just because the house is vacant doesn't mean nobody owns it. Put water on the fire. protect exposure. And that lady screaming just made it more frightening than what it was. Did they ever figure out what caused the to blow up?

Fires do not start on their own. Someone was there, therefore, it's possible someone is still there. The Fire Department isn't there to take some bystander's word that it's empty. And just because occupants might be drug users, it's also not their place to determine if they are worth saving. What IS their job however is to determine what is searchable and search it. Put the wet stuff on the hot stuff. The only thing that should be allowed to burn is a controlled burn - one that's been cleared immediately prior to light off. Nobody there has a helmet that says "City Planner." They say "Firefighter." Be a firefighter. Save lives, save property, and protect the environment. I saw a lot of everything except those primary missions.

This is pretty bad to have guys just standing around not even putting water on the fire. In the beginning there's time to put up ladders and get a quick search of the front upper floor rooms. Though it's abandoned there are squatters out there. You can't just say it's abandoned and we are just going to let it burn. Radiant heat and fire can cause extention to other properties as well.
