There's ways to still use it but it would cost too much time and money for the law enforcement so they usually don't follow through with the charges

Even if this is totally staged (and it probably is) I think it's good clean fun - and I learn something every episode I watch. The theme to me is DIY and these guys are geniuses at this. That's just no in dispute. And I have endless admiration for that enterprising spirit. 'Go Moonshiners!'

They do have some fairly ingenious ways, but it’s extremely inefficient as opposed to other DIY ways, they’re losing a ton of efficiency in the electricity set up, as well as the yield of ethanol is generally going to be 10% less because of the loss from dilute gasses

I’m not shaming nor patronizing, I’m just giving another perspective on what they’re doing, of course there is a million and one nuances you can add to distilling, but there are a few key nuances that they might have overlooked or not known about, so I wanted to add to the notion that there can be a lot learned from this Even chemistry, electrodynamics and thermodynamics is subtly taught in these episodes which I think especially in this entertainment format is really good. I’m personally not a huge fan of how our education system is orchestrated

Without the enzymes from some kind of malted grain (barley or corn) the starches in any grains added to the mash (usually corn and or rye) are not available for alcohol conversion. It's more difficult and time consuming to mess with malting grains and more expensive to buy malted brewer's barley than to just use sugar and add cornmeal to the mash for an authentic flavor.
