OMG Jul!!! This is crazy, I'm from Brooklyn so please don't mind my excitement! I have never heard of Percy until this video right now! I have always had a connection in my heart to Appalachia, I don't know why. Maybe I lived there in another life, but the stories, culture, family love, hard work that most people couldn't do on their best day. I can't leave out my favorite part, when mountain people party! It is a sight to behold, the food, the shine, the laughter and most of all the dancing, I call it clogging but I think there are different names for it! Sorry to talk your ear off but I can't believe your comment, I am truly impressed, have to find out who Popcorn is! Thanks so much, Bev

Sure wish more businesses operated with a mind on employees and community. I just don't know how I feel about an illegal operation. the government made it illegal so THEY could have more money.. it was once said, "the government doesn't have money, they have OUR money". I know a lot of good comes from our taxes, but that doesn't mean I enjoy paying them. Great story, and as always, great sound track.

Good Sunday Morning JD! Everyone! This was an incredible experience to hear. Percy sure was lucky! I’m so glad he did so much for his community. Building Churches! Feeding the school children epic praise! The poor kids could rely on a decent meal at school! Thank God. Times were tough I’m sure the community rallied around him as he did so many good things Being an employer of so many back in the day helped support so many others! They were thankful not to have to die working the coal mines! JD this was so heartwarming to hear-breaking the Law or not! Loved this story. Love the music!! Take good care Please say hello to Sarah! Hey JD! Imagine my surprise when I saw this story! When I was 6 years old, we lived on the road between Mr. Percy and Mr. Jimmy's stores. I could walk to Mr. Jimmy's store. Mr. Percys granddaughter road my school bus. We went to Archers Lodge Elementary School. It's long gone now. But Flower's Plantation covers several miles between 96 hwy on 42 hwy almost to the Clayton city limit. All housing developments and huge apartment buildings, shopping malls, schools, you name it, it's there. I remember both these men and their beautiful hounds. We live a few miles away towards Wilson just off 42 hwy now. There is still a Percy Flower's store on 42 hwy 😊.

Percy's peach brandy was world famous. Where his store was located is a new store with a NC ABC store. That store will never sell as much liquor as Percy old store sold. My uncle was friends with Percy and I remember going in store in Johnston County to see Percy.

There was a bakery in Bluefield WV named Flowers Bakery. After watching this I wonder if there was a connection there. Thanks JD for another great video. I am in Florida but I was so glad that damn Hurricane got out of here. I lost power for two days and had to run the big generator. It cost me about $150.00 just for gas. But I was one of the lucky ones here in Citrus County. Parts of Crystal River is still under water. I hope you didn't have to deal with that. Have a great day JD.

Wish there were more Percy Flowers in this world. “Revenuers” are still scoundrels sucking the life out of everyone they can. A man should keep everything he earns and owning something should be finite, not something one pays for every year. How exactly does one own something if he has to pay for it every year or have it taken from him if he doesn’t?

I lived in Johnston County from 1982-1994. Mr Flowers was a legend, I actually hired one of his kin folk, can't remember the level of relationship they had, but I do remember the man being a good, hardworking fella who could always get me a jar of liquor when I needed it and it was always NC legit, corn liquor. Not sure where you live JD, but I sure hope you or none of your people were effected by the Hellene disaster. God Bless everyone in my home state of NC, my heart bleeds for you all.

I lived in NC. for 17 years and was told by folks who would know . Moonshine is NC's second largest cash generator to this day. When I asked what was the largest cash generator ? Well it just sort of went up in smoke , and I'm not talking about Tobacco. :-)

I live in Johnston County NC right down the street from the old Flowers farm. Percy may have been a generous person that was kind to his neighbors, but I can tell you his daughter isn't! She even told Arnold Palmer to go "F" himself when she tried to hire him to design a golf course for her and he gave her his price. She REALLY didn't like it and didn't hesitate to tell him so! I can also tell you that most of the acreage that Percy acquired has now been developed and turned into communities. I say "most" of the acreage because some of it still hides evidence, and that land is not only NOT being developed but you can't go taking a walk around there either! There's a very mysterious pond that no one is allowed access to on one of these plots of private land.
