Cause we've ended as lovers (composed by Stevie Wonder) - Jeff Beck (1944-2023)/Syreeta (1946-2004) cover. Tom broke the B string of his guitar on his previous composition called "The Notes"... He had to change the guitar string on stage. In the meantime, the band began to play…
B string changed and guitar tuned : 03:50
Fretless bass solo : 06:16
Guitar solo : 09:05
Tom Ibarra (guitar), Romain Labaye (bass), François Faure (keys), Archibald Ligonnière (drums). First time gig for Tom in Paris, at Caveau des Oubliettes.

Recorded, mixed, filmed & edited by Jean-François Mousseau
"Cause we've ended as lovers" was composed by Stevie Wonder and released in 1974 on ex-wife album "Stevie Wonder presents Syreeta" (Motown). The song was covered by Jeff Beck as an instrumental version (dedicated to guitarist Roy Buchanan and thanks to Stevie) on his album "Blow by Blow" (Epic Records) recorded in October 1974 and released in 1975. It is said that Stevie gave this song to Jeff because of "Superstition" which was co-written with and for Beck in 1972: after finishing the song, Wonder decided that he would allow Beck to release his version of the song first. At last, "Superstition" was released first by Stevie in 1972 as the "Talking Book" album lead single.

Now this whole group is tight and responsive to each other. Amazing arrangement of this song. The drummer was very sensitive and used excellent sound dynamics as well as the keyboard musician. Each member of this group is a great player as an individual, but more importantly was how they allowed breathing room for each other and for the song itself. They were so relaxed and just let it flow out. Wow, amazing how it all flowed together.

Everybody here is locked in to the overall groove and feel. Sensitive playing throughout. The drummer's brush work is beautiful; nice shift to sticks as the intensity grows. The bass player's solo development is very musical. The piano player creates nice textures and adds very interesting rhythmic tension when he has his space. Tom Ibarra is very melodic as usual. He blends long note phrases with dense lines; by doing so he creates a memorable solo. Where do you buy the CD/MP3/ album?

I am a "B" series guitar player, but I always have two guitars at my gigs; just in case I break a string, as I know the audience will have very little patience with interruptions. Not withstanding the owner of the place telling us that we will not be welcome a next time. Such is life... but I believe Tom Ibarra could leave for a bathroom break in the middle of a solo without having anybody getting irate.

Actually, this tune takes some finesse to weave through while trying to do something different since it’s been done to death. Especially considering his age, he had some good ideas and sometimes bit off more than he could chew. Besides, when improvising you know that there are times when magic happens and you do something really great, then the next time you play you wonder if you’re ever going to play anything decent again. At least that’s been my experience.

It's amusing that people obviously know a little about bass to make the comment that Bassist Romain Labaye isn't playing fretless even though your ears say he is. I'm not sure but I think Jaco Pastorius was the first to remove the frets from his bass and fill the slots with an epoxy. The rest is music history really. Great sounding band BTW.
