I have had a jalapeno plant in the house for about 11/2 years that was started from a nursery plant then outside for one summer. It has always produced but small amounts of peppers. Now it has just one pepper and ALL of the leaves are curling down. Is it just that it has run it's life cycle or what? Thank You.

You’re right in a way a house plant can slow down production of peppers as it gets older but some plants can live up to 4 years indoors with no problem, what you could do is overwinter it this year and then it might come back stronger next year after a little rest bite . I have a video on overwintering coming next week. :)

Thanks!! I wasn't sure what was up with most plants in the one grow tent I was using, what with most types of hot pepper plants leaves curling up, up into cigarillos almost, intermittently. Temps and humidity and lighting didn't seem to be the issue so I was starting to put it down to a curse.. your video helped me pinpoint the likely problem - wind stress. The channel fan I was using for ventilation was likely too effective, even if the plant leaves were moving very minutely in the air it moved. I turned it off and the leaves did gradually uncurl.

My young pepper plants have the problem that causes the leaves to curl upwards. The second reason you mentioned. But they have been indoors every since they were planted and therefore haven’t been exposed to winds, extreme weather or heat/cold. What could be the reason?

I have a chocolate ghost pepper that is leaf curing like crazy. All my other peppers are fine including my red Ghosts. I grow indoors and I am sure it is a light issue. The chocolate ghost does not seem to like the light as much as all my other chillies. Unfortunately I cant dim the light nor raise it any higher in the grow tent.

Hi again! The plants recovered well from the supposed cold. This weekend we went on a little holiday at our cottage. On the previos week we notised that some of the bottom leaves (more than usual) were turning yellow and dying. It wasn't anything too major though and we just gave the plants a few nitrogen pills and watered them well. Maybe too well... When we came back today, i immediately came to see my little chilies, but noticed that propably a sixth of the leaves had turned yellow and died from the bottom. Basically all of the recent growth from the top (only the latest leaves) had withered away and had black spots on them. There are still leaves left on the middle section of my plants. They have a yellow tone though and the top leaves that are left seem to have darker spots on them. What should i do? Could this be an infection or due to overvatering or a nutrient defficiensy? Please help!

That picture of down turned claw looking leaves, turning down away from the main vein was a picture of leaves with Mites damage. Lack of water has a uniform droop to the leaves, where the main vein droops too.

You need to look at the leaf curl and see what way it us curling and diagnose it properly before just adding fertiliser.

I have a couple I just can't figure out. As the new growth is still curling (all the leaves). I know I forgot Epsom salt in some transplants. That's the only thing I can think of. I raised the lights wich helped for some but not the 2. I started calmag but not enough time has passed. The 1 I don't have a backup for. How often should I use calmag? Any other suggestions?

If leaves are turning brown then most of the time it's because they are drying out or have a nutrient burn. Make sure the light source is far enough away and your plant is kept watered.

I'm a first time chili grover. I have two chili plants, that are around 5 to 6 months old. In the last few days they're leaves have started to curl down. Could it be because they were in a car for 5 hours and may have been exposed to cold while i transferred them from the car to our cottage. They were in a bag to keep the cold out. It was minus 8 celsius degrees though. So, can the curling be just becouse of that? They were all good before, so i don't think its a watering problem.

It could be but curling g down is mostly due to a watering or feeding problem. Drooping down however can be lack of oxygen or extreme temperature change. So if your plants are drooping it could be the plastic bag that you used to cover the plant.

You might need to add more drainage with perlite in the soil the soil might be heavy and hold water. I have a video called "How to water your pepper plant" on here where I discuss edema.

The darkness on there is natural, it's because of the breed of chilli but other reasons for dark leaves are from leaf burn or feeding your plant a lot of nitrogen. If you have leaf burn you need to control the amount of light or sun your plant gets if it's excess nitrogen it's fine, no need to do anything.

Curling upwards most of the time is because of environmental issues, too much light, too much wind, not enough water. The plant is perspiring more water than it is taking in.

My sweet peppers leaves are twisting back on themselves, they are free of any spots, they are a rich glossy deep green colour, they are also very crinkly or bubbly looking. The soil is rich and top dressed with very old crumbly horse manure. I have turned off the drip irrigation, 1 day ago, below the mulch the soil is wet enough to squeeze into a ball. Will leaving it turned off fix the leaf issue, i also have small patches of black colour on the central stems, might this also be related to over watering too. I have 12 plants of 3 varieties all with the same issue. Your advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Black patches where the side shoots come off the stem are normal in a lot of pepper varieties. If they are crinkling then it's a deficiency or pests. If it's the new growth that are crinkling then it's most likely a calcium deficiency. To fix this make a foliar spray by bringing 6 eggs to the boil in a litre of water and once boiling pull off the heat and leave to soak for 24 hrs. Then dive out the eggs, put the water in a spray bottle and use it to spray the leaves. If not then Check under the leaves for pests. Ive been growing some cayennes indoors in a small DIY grow tent with LEDs running about 12hrs a day. My region is in the tropics, but i went for indoor growing as I dont get much direct sunlight at my windows. The seedlings are still in the early stage and have yet to grow true leaves, but for most of them the cotyledons are pointing up. Some of them seem to also bend halfway along the cotyledon and point up. Ive read that it might be due to having too much light, but i doubt my setup is anywhere nearly as powerful as commercial setups. Could there be any other reason? All the cotylendons will point up to start with, it is how they get free from the hard seedling shell, give them time and they will level out.

Hey, I’m trying to grow chillis in a non-heated propagator . They are doing great . I live in England. But I took the lid off overnight (they are about 4-5 inches tall - about 2 wks old) and the leaves curled inwards upright . When I put the lid back on they went back to normal. Is this a cause for concern? Or when they are a bit older will they be able to grow without the propagator? Or is it simply not humid enough without a unit to create humidity? Thanks! No not a cause for concern at all, it's the sudden change in humidity that did it. When the leaves curl upwards it's due to an enviromental problem as the leaves are perspiring more water than the plant is taking up, this can happen with wind, heat or as you said change of humidity, just make sure you give the plant extra water to cope with the dry air in your room before removing the top.

Hey, curling inwards on itself is an environmental problem most of the time either too much wind or a draught, too much sunlight, the grow light being too close or under watering. The plant is usually expelling more water than it's absorbing and is trying to reduce the surface area.

Curious what effect does low humidity have on leaf curl? Specifically I'm asking about growing seedlings indoors under an LED until it's warm enough to put my plants outside in late May. I decided yesterday to increase misting the plants with just plain water.

Low humidity would cause the leaf to curl up as it's an environmental stress on the plant. Most the water you give the plants is used as a coolant and so if the air is dry then the plant has to take up more water than if the humidity was ok. I myself use a vitopod indoors, it's like a mini heated Greenhouse and keeps the water in as condensation.

Thank you for your informative video!! Thankfully, my pepper plants look very beautiful (so far so good) except for 2 of the leaves on a few of my plants curling downward. I am happy that this is probably a problem with either underwatering or pests (we have had so much rain recently that I have not watered them hardly at all!), and I did spray them for the pests just in case...one day I saw some aphids crawling on the underside of some of the leaves. Curling up is due to enviromental issues. It means the plant is perspiring more water than it's taking up.The plants are too hot or getting too much wind you need to shelter the plants from the sun for part of the day and ensure the plants get enough water. You can also spray the leaves with water at night time when the sun goes down.

Curling up means it's putting out more water than it's absorbing. If you have grow lights move them up a bit higher, if it's outside move it to an area with more shade. If you have a fan running point it away from the plant. Give the plant a little more water.

It can be a calcium or manganese deficiency, it sometimes happens with giving the plant too much nutrients too. You see it's a fine balance when you give your plant nutrients. If you give it too much of one thing then it might block the absorption of something else. E.G Maby you give the plant too much nitrogen it will show signs of potassium deficiency because the plant can't take up the potassium it needs due to too much nitrogen.

I have seedlings and they’re all curling upwards. I planted them straight into the ground in a garden bed with red mulch. Two of them are yellow and a little white and black. The others are green but they’re still curled. The stems look good. Strong and a bit of hair growing. Calcium deficiency, to make a calcium foilage spray bring 6 eggs to a rolling boil in a litre of water then pull off the hob and leave to cool for 24hrs. Then strain the water into a spray bottle and spray the leaves.

Hey Welsh Chilli, I can't thank you enough for your informative chilli videos, they're fantastic. I've probably seen this one about 5 times now as I had leaf curl due to wind stress. However, my chillies are now exhibiting curling down and inwards in the top leaves and some growing leaves. Some are curled so bad that they look like pirate hooks. The central vein of the leaves are also a lighter colour and look bloated compared to the healthy leaves. :-( Is this due to overwatering or some kind of micronutrient deficiency? Hi Josh, I do try. Downward curling leaves is most probably a watering issue but light coloured veigns is probablly a Sulpher deficiency.

@@WelshChilli hey mate, just wanted to give you and the rest of the community an update on this. I joined a FB group so that I could post photos of my problem as a second opinion. Turns out it was an issue with mites that was causing the leaf curl! I've since stripped off the affected leave and applied Mancozeb. New leaves are now starting to sprout again! The new leaves are looking a bit deformed, but hopefully now I've got the mites under control and it would only improve over time.

Because of enviromental problems, it could be too much sun, too close to the lights or too much wind. It's because the plant is perspiring more water than it's taking up. The brown tips could be due to over fertilizing nitrogen burn.

Pests make your plant curl down not up. Curling up is due to environmental factors. Too much wind or sun, make sure they have enough water too.

My tree is one year (green pepper) in a raised garden. All the leaves are curling up and the tree is about 2/3 feet tall (1 meter) the peppers are small and donot get big. I believe too much heat/sun to be the problem. How much light do you recommend? Is it safe to dig up and can I continue to grow this plant in a pot?

Yeah, they do this to conserve water. If the plant is a year old it is quite safe to dig out the plant. Try and keep as much of the root system as intact as you can. You can trim about a third off safely after pulling it out as I do this when over wintering my plants. Putting the plant in a pot would be easier to control so It would be a good thing instead of losing your nutrients to the ground. Make sure it has good drainage.
