I have leaf curl at the top of just 4 of my indeterminate tomatoes, we’ve had temps around 30 in the day with some nights around 10 with little to no rain, I’ve been watering daily, I hope I don’t have to remove them, leaves are still a nice green with visible damage, they are still producing tomatoes, so I’ll just keep a eye on them a bit more and hopefully they recover

This is very helpful. I did have an issue with a tomato plant grew fine and then all of a sudden the leaves grew very close together in clumps. Then they curled up after about a week and the plant died off so I removed it. The soil that I purchased was from a company (Soil3) and my other tomato plants and rest of the garden were not effected so I don't think it was the soil.. I never found out what caused it. I did spray with neem oil but it was too late.

There's a genetic component in open pollinated hybrids. Breeders try to select it out of they can because it can have negative effects on productivity.

I have 10 tomato plants in one 4x8 bed that is raised 3" out of the ground. Three of the ten plants have had leaf curl since they were 2 feet tall. They are now 6 feet tall and still have the same leaf curl but no issues with the tomatoes growing on them. They were all subjected to the same environmental stress and the same watering routines and are not affected by pests. I have tried shade cloth to reduce the amount of sun and heat but that did nothing. The plants are doing fine but I am wondering what would cause just three of the 10 to leaf curl. The leaves are curled pretty tightly that you could shove tobacco in them and smoke them lol. They are also very stiff and hard compared to the other normal growing plants. If anyone has any experience with this then please share. Thanks!

We like to grow sweet alyssum all around our veggie garden - easy to grow from seed and self-seeds every year thereafter. Also, cosmos, zinnias, and lots of various native flowers to get a bunch of pollinator activity to your garden

Concerning compost: A couple years ago I had 2 new beds that I filled primarily with compost and the tomato plants in these beds, only, curled horribly. This compost happened to be delivered hot, unexpectedly, and I had no option but to use it, immediately. Is it possible that a large amount of hot compost can cause leaf curl? The next 2 years these beds were fine, so I’m not suspecting herbicides in the compost. I had a belief at the time that it was risky to use as much hot compost as I did. If I recall correctly, other beds were top dressed with this compost and they were fine.
@geekygreenhouse
@geekygreenhouse Жыл бұрын
I imagine that hot compost can cause curling leaves, as the unfinished compost isn't yet ready for plants to use. The high temps are also a concern for plant roots which prefer to be cool. I'd do like you said and top dress if you ever have the issue again
@ttb1513
@ttb1513 Жыл бұрын
@@geekygreenhouse Yeah, I definitely only used the hot compost because I ended up with no other good choice. For clarity, I did let the compost cool down well prior to planting, by spreading it out, etc. Of course, letting the compost cool in a matter of hours does not let the microbe populations finish as usual.

I see it so often that people think they need to water their plants every day. Wrong! Water them once a week and give them a good soaking. Make the plants get deeper roots. Lots of leaf curling I see is because of over watering, NOT under watering!
@jimmyjo1375
@jimmyjo1375 Жыл бұрын
Water when needed not once a week or on a schedule.
@fishlovme
@fishlovme Жыл бұрын
@@jimmyjo1375 my point is not to over water. Usually one inch of water a week is enough. That's a good soaking of the soil, which you can usually do once a week. But if you live in a dry climate with high temps all summer then it's probably more often.
@geekygreenhouse
@geekygreenhouse Жыл бұрын
Agreed - deep watering *less* frequently is the way to go! Bigger roots, more resilient plants 👍

@geekygreenhouse
@geekygreenhouse 11 ай бұрын
Just try to keep the soil evenly moist, and don't water unless the soil is dry a few inches below the surface. The roots can access deeper moisture

I do this and found that boiling a 325mg. Uncoated Aspirin in 2-4 cups of water first activates the Salicylic acid better and I get better results. I mix this after boiling with water to make 1 gallon. I add 1 tsp. Ga. of Yucca extract to keep it on the leaves longer instead of soap.

Can you spray dish soap & water on all garden plants?
@geekygreenhouse
@geekygreenhouse 11 ай бұрын
No, dish soap is not recommended for spraying on your plants, as it can cause harm to the leaves. If you need to use an insecticide, best to use insecticidal soap, as it is formulated differently to not damage the plant

@ladonna1902
@ladonna1902 11 ай бұрын
Did the plant have a label or tag that came with it? Sometimes the tag will say whether it's determinate or indeterminate. Also if the label/tag says it will require staking or caging as they grow, then it's likely indeterminate. If the label/tag says container garden friendly, it's likely determinate and will only grow to a certain size.
