I have a Sunbeam model FP-12B electric skillet that looks identical to the one you said would fit 4 grilled cheese sandwiches in. Mine has a chrome temp. dial with a non vented aluminum lid. The story behind it is somewhere around 1959 or 1960 my mother re-married and received this as a wedding gift from Frank and Geraldine Carter ( which were our next door neighbors ). I was 3 or 4 years old at the time ( I have just turned 67 ) and mother went on to have 3 more children. Many, many, many meals were cooked in this skillet. Hamburger patties with grilled onions, fried chicken, country fried steak with gravy, pork chops etc. She used this skillet at least 3 times per week when we were growing up. Unfortunately we lost mother in 2014 and my siblings didn't want her old vintage revere ware copper bottom cook ware with lids and the electric skillet etc. so I kept all of it and not only is all of it my favorite it brings me to a happy place with floods of good memories of my childhood. Just 2 days ago my wife cooked pork chops, potatoes and onions in it and it was delicious. My wife commented on how evenly it heats as opposed to our newer elec. skillet that has hot spots. Also the RevereWare copper bottom pots are my favorite pots and pans as well but that's for another day. You just can't buy stuff like this anymore. I enjoyed your video!

Hi barronlatta - thank you and I'm glad the video brought back good memories of you mom's Sunbeam skillet. The Sunbeam's are my favorites and they do a great job. Good for you! It is so sad that Corning sold out their complete housewares division in 1996 to World Kitchens, Inc. and they no longer are the same wonderful products that they were from 1915 until 1996. Just too bad that those people changed the glass formula from Borosilicate glass to Soda Lime which just does not hold up like the original. That new soda lime stuff is scary…Google it…don’t buy it. Thank you for another great video!

My wife and I received a Westbend electric skillet as a wedding gift nearly 27 years ago. I used it for everything for many years. Somewhere along the line it got packed away and fell out of use. Recently my daughter found it and asked if she could take it. Now I wish I could get it back!! I certainly loved that old Westbend.

The Corning models remind me of the West Bend "Lazy Day" slow cooker I grew up with as our "crock pot." A heated base with removable enameled steel vessel with handles and lid that you can even use on the stovetop. It was handed down to me and I loved it so much I found and bought a second one!

I find they work great, to just take your frozen meat and season it, throw it in the electric skillet and cook it. I tend to forget to defrost my meat and cooking it from frozen doesn't seem to hurt anything. Sometimes you do have to remove the lid to get a nice sear on the other side, as when cooking it on the first side with the lid on, tends to produce a lot of steam. Although the steam helps to defrost the meat, the second - top side can tend to steam when you cook it, other than sear if there are too many juices in the pan.

My Mom was a wonderful cook and cooked up a storm in her Cornflower Corning ware electric skillet (with the white base and black handled bottom) and many of her Corning ware items- including the large coffee percolator. I have them now 😍! I loved coming home to see the Electric skillet cooking away on the counter and I would run over to look thru the glass cover to see what delights awaited us! I never knew that electric skillets were made in stainless steel back in the day until watching your video. I grew up frying chicken and making goulash in mom's square aluminum electric skillet. The aluminum was a little too reactive for my taste, so I never bothered looking into an electric skillet for my cooking needs. Thanks for doing this video Kevin! I was able to decide which vintage electric skillet I was to going to purchase...and it was the best money I ever spent. It makes the best saurkraut and chops, pot roast,, Swiss steak, and who knew...you pull out the plug and toss it in the dishwasher! All those childhood hours wasted on scrubbing mom's skillet in the sink 😅😂😢😮😊, I never knew and they never told me.
@cavalcadeoffood
@cavalcadeoffood 3 ай бұрын
Hi ceeroberts - stainless steel was an option in many appliances but it always was a higher cost than the aluminum models. There were a few manufacturers who made coffee pots in stainless steel, and while they were more expensive they didn't give any off-flavor to the coffee. Glad you enjoy your vintage skillet - these are wonderful for so many things! Thanks!

I'm so happy that you showed the Corning pieces. I have both of them, and had not seen any information about them. Hi Kevin, I have been watching some of your videos and I enjoy them. I believe that I must be around your age as I remember many of the small electrics that you collect. The videos take me back to the 60s and 70s when items like an electric frypan or blender were marketed with the same level of enthusiasm as a new iPhone might be today. With COVID I have been cooking a lot more at home and appreciating gadgets like my stand mixer from the early 90s, or my electric wok from the mid-70s. These were not thrift store purchases, I bought them new-and they still work! I think it is great that you have a love for industrial design. I think it is an art form unto itself. I'm glad someone is preserving these products-otherwise they would be lost to landfills. Do you actually open your shop to the public, or it is mostly a place to hold your collections?
@cavalcadeoffood
@cavalcadeoffood 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike! Great to hear from you! Always nice to meet someone who appreciates these appliances. Yes, many were marketed as "modern marvels of convenience" and "life-changing" back when they were introduced! They fact that you are still using your mixer and wok after all these years tells you that they were well made in addition to being well designed. Since so many more people are cooking at home due to the pandemic, it's nice to dust off some of these appliances and put them into service. The building is really a place to keep the collection and produce videos. Thanks so much!

It is indeed funny to see that "enthousiasm" vibrating in the ads from that period, although I suspect the Women's Liberation Front enjoys these old publicities with far less enthousiasm :) The world was less chaotic, you had the Reds and us, the men and the women etc. All that radically changed, but I'm not sure it is a much happier world ?

Kevin. I love seeing these appliances. I inherited a square Sunbeam, just like the one you showed, from my beloved Grandmother. She made the most amazing fried chicken, using Kelliogg's cornflake crumb recipe, but fried instead of baked. It finally bit the dust and I bought one of the stainless Farberware skillets. I love it because you can get a whole chicken in it. As always, thanks for sharing your collection, that brings back so many wonderful memories. Stay safe, stay mighty!

I had a 'oil filled' skillet which had a huge domed lid, like 18 inches tall, so you could cook a chicken on a beer bottle. I gave the domed lid to my sister, but I suspect you could just put a tall pot of the right diameter on the skillet base and achieve the same thing. It was designed - so the instructions said to be a stove top oven !

Wow what a nice collection. The uncoated Sunbeams are my favorite and I have three of them, they are fantastic as you say for cooking outdoors and keeping your kitchen clean and odor free. Please do not use any of the early Teflon coated ones; that early Teflon contains PFOA and PFOS both of which have cancer risk factors. The chemical itself leaches into the hot cooking foods and can also be ingested by the coating flaking off. I would personally discard them.

HI MrScottie68! I agree that the old Sunbeam are the best and they are my favorites, also. I use them all the time. @cavalcadeoffood

Hi Jeff & Kevin! Yes, Corning made an "electric skillet" for a number of years. Essentially, it was a two-piece unit with the heating platform serving as a hotplate and then a piece of Corning cookware on the top. Unlike a conventional electric skillet, where the food being cooked makes direct contact with the heat source, this indirect heat method that Corning used increases cooking time. The upside is that things don't tend to burn or scorch as easily, but the cooking method is not as efficient. It was a way to allow people to have an electric skillet that matched the rest of their cookware, something Faberware, Revere Ware, Wear Ever and others did, as well. In the case of the metal cookware manufacturers, they could produce an electric skillet with the heating element built into the bottom of the utensil. Thanks for watching!

Best thing ever for frying chicken and soft crabs. Trying to fry on a glass top stove the heat is hard to keep even. My husband won’t let me go “backwards” & get an old fashioned stove with real burners, even they are better than glass tops. I would go soft crabbing with my grandmother in the morning & she would fry them for supper that night in her electric frying pan. Nothing better!

I have managed to find two of these over the years, one small and one large. I use them regularly and love that they are all stainless steel and completely submersible! I just throw mine in the dishwasher and they come out spotless every time. Kevin do you have any Towncraft electric skillets in your collection? Of course we're commenting...lol. Love them all, and I spy one I have on your shelf. The Sunbeam that has the cover handle on the side. Mine has the broiler Calrod for the cover that plugs into the same temp control for the frypan. I've only used it to see if it works, but never have used it to cook. I have the 2 sided flip to lower or raise rack, and it's cookbooks/manuals. I can only imagine the burns the lid may have caused. But, it is the preferred skillet to make your Paprikash. Perfect every time. One question though. Can one adjust the temp control or calibrate it? On both this one, and my Sunbeam Turquoise is off by 40 degrees. One gets too hot, and the other is too cool.

@@wendyw4487 The philosophy behing household appliances has changed a lot: until the 1950's they generally were expensive too but often built to last a lifetime. (except for those of companies like Bersted, which made cheap junk). Later, companies shifted away from that idea, and they wanted to reach the masses with always cheaper products. Except for cheaper material, the best way to lower the price was to built these appliances in countries with lower wages. So double loss: employment and quality. But the general public doesn't seem to mind their appliances often seem to stop functioning just shortly after the warrant period is over...

I have two Sunbeam ones. An FP-A-Standard 11 inch And RLB-6-Buffet 12 inch. Both work wonderfully. The FPA was $8, plus 20 for a NOS heat probe from ebay. (I can't find this model anywhere, with the correct probe, so I just got a NOS one.) The buffet style one was $10 plus shipping. I prefer the buffet, which is from the 60's, it's better for large cuts of bacon. The other is from the early 70's. I use them everyday for breakfast. Eggs, bacon. Toast in the 40120 sunbeam toaster, coffee in the AP10 Sunbeam Percolator. I like to think that an electric skillet's name is akin to yes; a skillet. A round base with a handle or two, and a lid. Farberware and other skillets were round like a skillet. The Sunbeams are akin to yes; a pan. When I think of a pan, it is large, flat, and square or rectangular, like a baking pan. I believe this is why Sunbeam called their's the Sunbeam Electric Frypan.

I love electric skillets. So easy to control the heat. Seems when these no-nonstick skillets were real popular, they always included the temp for liver ! I think that generation - cooks from the 1950's ate a lot of liver. Must be a depression era thing. @ 5:11 I have a skillet like this one but the lid has a nice big square cut out, with a glass window so you can easily see how your food is cooking. I think it is a Universal brand and it is made from nice thick aluminum, so it gives a nice even heat. I also have a few 'oil core' type skillets that cook wonderfully. Sometimes the thinner aluminum electric skillets, get quite a bit hotter around the round heating element ring. I have a sunbeam skillet that has a heating element in the lid for broiling or browning the top of what you are cooking. I know you must have one of those. I don't think using one of those, with the bottom element and top element draws too much power, at least when I used my for great hash browns, it did not blow a fuse.

Thanks - I love electric skillets, too. They are so versatile. I have the Sunbeam with the element in the lid for broiling and browning. I haven't blown a fuse with it yet, but it does get quite hot. @@cavalcadeoffood Seems the depression era folks (and older) liked liver. I'll eat it if I have to, but don't prefer it. They come out nice and crispy.

The handiest electric fry pan presto made was called the wee-fry. It had a cooking surface that was about 6 X 9 and came with a glass lid that could be used as a baking dish. Too bad it was but rarely specified from which decade each of these "skillits" are. What was best for cooking purposes, aluminium or stainless steel ? And were the prices of both more or less similar ? Otherwise, nice collection, though I was expecting a Dormeyer too... The Dory "UFO" reminds me somewhat of the plastic Quellux Infrared lamp for health purposes, same design approach, one always expected a miniature Martian stepping out of it, and asking to be taken to our "leader". Skillets seem to have been less popular in Europe, as far as I can judge. A variety of pressure cookers (Miss Mary, Presto, SEB,...) and non-electric pans seem to have been more "en vogue" over here.

@@cavalcadeoffood I was thinking of putting a heavier pie plate type insert in the Party Chef, to help equalize out the hot spots, I bet that would work. I had another what I think of is an early 1950's electric skillet, that has a very big 'it's on' light, you can see the spirals of the nicrhrome metal lit up when it is heating. This is like the GE blue electric skillet but not nearly as thick. I like it because it is so big. You can really cook a lot in those big electric skillets. Hi Leah - I haven't heard of a Laski brand before so I'm sorry that I can't provide any information about it.

@@cavalcadeoffood thank you I'm assuming it's from the 1950 or earlier because it is directly the cord is directly into it you know you can't remove it it also has the lasko brand brand and I'd say that the base weighs as much as a old cast iron Skillet the big ones oh and the plug in the plug itself is connected to it it's on the corner of the bass in the handle is in the middle and the words is right under the handle where it tells you what degrees to put it on steak or have you but I was trying to look it up on the on KZbin couldn't find anything but I ran across your video and I thought well if anybody knows it would be you, I thank you for your time
