The black and white dark silver-grey and shiny chrome look of this film gives it a mature and powerful look. It gently takes us deeper into the dark and sinister realms of horror through the rooms in the vampire castle and dungeons with fire torches, candles and fireplaces that create beautiful fickle of shadows in the mysterious voodoo like alien atmosphere. It is interesting to watch the reality blur successfully into a sinister dark unknown through the contrasting setting and characters. The film is gentle and calm on the nerves after setting off with some energy reminiscent of the jolly 1960's hippie culture mixed with characters that remind us of American spy thrillers. The film maintains its balance between reality and fiction. It starts like an espionage when the investigating detective that wears a turtleneck sweater under his blazer that compliments his calm demeanour maintains his aloofness but soon develops into a detective thriller horror as he openly investigates the horrors in the eerie village and castle.

Special kudos to Stane Sever, the Yugoslav actor (born in Slovenia which was once part of Yugoslavia) whom beautifully-portrayed the Inn Keeper. And thanks to the uncredited voice-over artist whom did the english-VO for him.

Yeah, the Innkeeper is truly wonderful.

Watching this movie was like taking a trip back in time. I remember watching movies like this back in the late 60's and early 70's. We didn't have a big selection back then and a lot of movies were expected to be in black and white.

Surprisingly satisfying! Crisp print, like it was filmed with Leica lens hahaha. The German style of filmmaking is unique and unlike Hollywood. This made it refreshing to watch. Thx for a great upload.

Friggin’ awesome! Is it just me, or does ‘Nani’ look in one of the shots like Yoda? Love this film! You made it look new, still not sure how you do that but keep it up. My copy is barely watchable, so thank you!!
@safehousehorror1214 жыл бұрын
When I read your comment I was confused, so I went and watched Nani scenes and... OMG you are right! Like the whole first Nani scene is like Luke's first visit to Yoda's hut. At 26:00 she does indeed have some real facial similarities. Oh, that nutty George Lucas finding inspiration in the oddest places.... Thanks for the compliment also, glad you now have a great copy to watch!

Outstanding effort...nice to see things from a completely different perspective (German film...blk co-star)loved the use of culture an the fact that the non electric castle lit only by torches and candlelight not to mention you can tell how damp and cold the place was inside and out (you could see the breathes from the actors and the young ladie had to be freezing in that last scene lmaooooo they had her on display hehe... a castle over a cave....what a layout!

Why was this rated X, by the British film board? I guess for the undressing scene, but I thought that was done tastefully.
@safehousehorror1214 жыл бұрын
It’s not the same as American X, and no longer used due to the confusion. It only restricted to 16 & up, so it was more like an R minus. In those days, yeah this film was lucky to pass their certification. But by modern American standards it could be watched on children’s television broadcasts. PG at best. Thank you for the comment, I enjoy answering film questions.

Ah, haven't seen this one in quite a while :) It was such a clean print, so I watched it again.... interestingly IMDB has Maria, the innkeepers house maid listed as the professor's assistant, and his actual assistant simply listed as Karin Schumann :D Lol Oh, I did notice something I hadn't before, John the professor's servant was Quarrel in "Dr. No" two years earlier in 62...... Anyway, fun movie :) May I ask what software you use to clean the print?

I'm a vampire but I'm very, very old and I've lost almost all my teeth ... If there's a young beautiful girl somewhere over the rainbow, blonde eventually but not necessarily, she can be also brunette, auburn or redhead, who wants to turn her into a vampire, I can bite her with the last tooth, in fact a stump, which I still have ...
@DavidRice1113 жыл бұрын
They should'a filmed in a warmer season~ at the end, the "dead" vampire was exhaling frosty breath. : )

The movie endded unexpectly? Like it was cut short.
@safehousehorror1213 жыл бұрын
Yup, it’s a huge drawback. Not sure why they went this way with it. I’ve seen this in films of that era and earlier where the goal is reached and it ends. What makes this one especially bad is there’s no final confrontation, just the vampires destruction, and then its over.
@rozchristopherson6482 жыл бұрын
@@safehousehorror121 Maybe the movie budget was running out and they had to wrap it up quickly.

It must have been a chilly filming - in some of the scenes, the steam coming from their mouths as they spoke - I guess global warming wasn't yet happening!
