An easy build for starting out: Mutated Human Argonaut with Carapace, Regeneration, and Multiple Arms physical mutations, as well as the Analgesia physical defect. Then choose either Night Vision or Thick Fur with your last point. Stats are up to you, but I'd probably suggest 18 STR/18 AGI/18 TGH/16 INT/18 WIL/16 EGO. You'll get more attribute points as you level, so you can specialize more later. Some notes: Get Dual Wield and the Short Blade skill Jab with your first few levels. Make sure your Left Hand is equipped with a Short Blade (Dagger or Short Sword, mostly). For a total of 400 skill points (about two or three levels), this will let you attack with your off-hand 70% of the time, which is a big damage boost. Wear either a buckler of some kind on your arm and carry four weapons, or three weapons and a shield. Your next skill points should be spent on Shield skills for some extra defense. Mutation points should either be spent on Regeneration until level 5, then spread out, or you should level everything evenly as you go (mutations cap out at level 10). Regeneration will quickly become powerful enough to heal you a little every single turn of combat, Carapace becomes the strongest chest armor in the game by level 10, and Multiple Arms is a constant passive chance at extra damage in melee. Also be sure to use the Dual Wield skill "Flurry" off cooldown. It's very powerful with Extra Arms, since it will swing all four of your weapons instantly when you use it. Later on, if you're still alive, you can spend points on Tinker to play with and even construct some of the fun artifacts in the world.

Have you looked into Cogmind? It's doing a lot of interesting stuff with interface and the like while still sticking to the roguelike ideal. Think it's in alpha release at the mo, though still pretty featureful.

You might know this already but, if you take dominate you can dominate your beguiled creatures and spend their skill points, attribute points and mutation points. So yeah.. Potentially you can get a fire breathing carapace wearing goat minion.

I don't know where you got that, Catacalysm is updated 2-3 times every day, and tbh I've never heard too much of the Dev team I just play their game because it's fucking awesome. Probably my favourite game ever, I built a car from scratch and then ran it through a FEMA camp shooting turrets and selling meth to local NPC's.

Corncakes Meme I got that from being fairly involved with the game, and it's community, for a number of years. The main dev team keeps adding in features nobody wants because they think it's cool and it's turned a lot of people away from the game. Bearing in mind they don't develop the majority of this stuff because it's open source so anyone can create and suggest things but the dev team decides what gets added, yet keeps going against what their players want.

If Splatters gauge for a classic rouge-like is used keys. Than ToME is the truest in all it's ilk. Fack some of the abilty binds require Shift, Ctrl and Alt.
