All Churches are meant to be tax exempt. There is a reason for this. If you tax a religious organization that violates the separation between Church and state and Churches will have every right to be involved (in every way) in politics. The wall of separation is tax exemption.

@@raptman5425 so the idea of atonement and how it fits into our lives and can improve our capacity to act forthrightly is really beneficial when the person has internalized that idea for him or her self. As an atheist, I can see the value in that lesson, and it largely parallels effective psychotherapy. One of the big differences between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other religions is that it is a lay church. People volunteer thier time. Even the President of the church is not paid. He had a long career as a heart surgeon before joining the leadership. This allows for more money to be put into serving others. Things like the welfare system (ranches, orchards, processing plants), education (universities, online degrees, training & practicums) and of course humanitarian projects. The church gave over 1 billion to humanitarian aid in 2023 alone. The church covers overhead so 100% of donations go to the projects.

It's been two years since the "whistleblower guy" did his expose in the US, but I have read about no Federal lawsuits, no indictments, no IRS anything. Or what about the Canada Revenue Agency? Our society is different. Even without religion or politics mixed into it, we do not hug and kiss for public display. It is nothing even related to homophobia. We respect other people’s private space and public sensibilities and it may also be perhaps, a mix of cultural beliefs and practices. Overwhelming affections that may have sexual intimacy variety are best done in private, and the best to display it is only with your partner in a room where nobody needs to witness it. Patting the shoulders briefly if he or she is a family or friend, or shaking hands to congratulate, smile, even bow down or acknowledging with nodding of head, waving, will just do fine in public.

It's never been a secret that tithing money is used to supplement university education at BYU. I, as a Canadian, obtained my bachelor's from one of the smaller campuses and was often reminded that my low tuition was only due to the sacrifice and tithes of others. Tithing supplements the education of those from around the world who pay as little as $100 US per year to obtain a university degree (including housing, food, courses, and insurance). A large portion of the land owned is orchards, ranches, and farms in the US that provide food for the churches' welfare system. These items are shared with those both in Canada and around the world. I'm disappointed no mention of the bishops' storehouses in Canada not mentioned. Other land holdings included those for chapels, temples, university campuses, historical sites, family camping sites etc.

Remove tax exempt status from ALL churches/cults. Edit: Leaving this cult was the smartest/best thing I've ever done for myself. No regrets here!
@gregmckenzie4315 Жыл бұрын
We need a true separation between church and state. Tax-exempt status should not be given to any church (cult) that advocates and teaches doctrines that have no basis in fact or reality. We should defund all of these institutions by making them pay the same taxes as any other corporation. This is important at this point in time because we are facing a mass extinction event that is, in large part, the result of doctrines that define human beings as a privileged species that is above all other species and which is destined to rule, and dominate all other life forms. This view forms the basis of our culture and it is the product of predatory religious practices that are destroying the ecology upon which all of us depend.

No, that would not be just nor right! Yes, remove the tax exemption from the church as in this video! You ought not paint all church denominations with the same brush! I guess you know exactly everything about the disbursement of the sacred funds the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints receives and how it is applied, do you believe if you are part of an organization that welfare funds are received by donors that it is there to help its parishioner’s who participate in the program. That the church is the biggest proponent of education and helps those members of the church with discounted tuition as part of the program, just like state and out of state students where there is a separate rate respectively. Do you realize where the church grows in population that buildings are built mortgage free to house the saints congregating in those areas, to provide a place of worship. Everything takes money and it is the faith of those members who pay tithings that these wonderful blessings are expended to facilitate the growth. I think you are stuck with your prejudices and are judging very immaturely and without the full scope of the manner of stewardship over these sacred funds how it all works together. All this show has done is take bitter hurt people who know full well the commitment these members make, and target the church based on people who have nothing better than to badger the good name of this religion. Dig deeper talk to a leader in the church and give fair time to address these questions. The hearts of these members are good, kind generous in so many ways. This show is just looking to take advantage of the hate filled world and collect their own filthy lucre in the name of entertainment.

We were not perfect, but I was impressed with the leaders' and members' effectiveness. We used a structured and principled approach to: 1) serve and minister to individuals, families, and communities (including those who are not of our faith), 2) share our personal and Church resources with those in need, and 3) help others become self-reliant through education, employment, and managing their personal finances. We did our best to fulfill this complex, sensitive, and nuanced work and the Lord blessed us to help many people.

Who is watching this while wearing their magic underwear? 🙋🏻♂

Dont want to judge or critique LDS" theology. But I feel like any religion that says you should pay your tithe before feeding your family, should raise massive red flags. Cant imagine any god want people to starve in order to pay tithe
@jodsterf2 жыл бұрын
the lds church would never do that. but if you need food or help with your rent and bills, you have to tell your bishop so he can help you, you can't just complain that you paid tithing and then couldnt feed your kids because you didn't let your bishop know.

When you apply to BYU as a student you sign an honor code that specifically outlines what is expected of your behavior. All students must sign or will not be admitted. This isn't something you're blindsided with. All these students know and are aware of the consequences of YOU breaking the honor code.

Change that tax system if Canadians have a problem with this. The church is following the law -- the law is the problem. I'll gladly keep paying my tithing. It has blessed my life and I am grateful for the charity work done by the church. No one is forced to pay tithing.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints, I can say that I give my money to this church with no doubt that it will be put to good use. Now, how many of you can say that about the governments you live under. The ex Mormons in the room have an ax to grind and it has little to do with money, and more to do with their pride. Jesus Christ is at the head of this church working through imperfect people, but non the less he is prevailing.
