When selecting the casket for my father, the guy told me that with some of the less expensive models, “sometimes the handles can break off”. I didn’t know it was a common sales tactic, and was stunned. I reflexively replied “uh...then why do you stock it?”, which caught him off guard, and he had no answer for it.
@FretlessMayhem5 жыл бұрын
I was so unnerved at the possibility of the handle I was going to be holding while bringing my father’s body to his grave breaking off, and him tumbling out, that I googled it later, finding out it’s a common lie these people tell grieving families to get them to buy more expensive caskets. Kind of a horrible way to go about it, in my opinion.

how the corporations got such a strong hold in the Funeral Industry was due to families picking out the biggest and best sign the contract and then end up not paying, the family gets to a point where they can not afford to carry all that money on the books and the corps come in and offer huge amounts of money plus they get to keep their jobs. Only now they have to collect the money BEFORE the service time can be set. So when a family needs to know up front they will be expected to write a check, pull out the plastic or hand over insurance policies. or best of all stack up the cash. So all of this is two fold, families not paying and to be a nice guy the funeral director did not push to get his money.

There should be an environmental law made to make basic wood or wood conglomerate caskets. And then one could rent the outer ornate metal one just for the service; and once you are put on the ground only the inner casket would be buried. Making decomposition more natural and complete, leaving just the bones after a couple of years. And saving a lot of money to the family left.
@mksabourinable6 жыл бұрын
Formaldehyde (what's used in embalming) is also a major environmental polluter. So like.... Even if the casket decomposes, the body won't decompose properly, and when it finally starts to, it'll pollute the ground.

As to the leaking embalming fluid.....during the embalming process the excess fluid as well as all the fluid drained from the body goes down the drain so it is only treated however your used bath water gets treated anyway. So i guess its no big deal if it leaches into the ground.

Lynn with cremation there is no more to look at no more to visit, with burial there is a casket that can take up to 200 years to decay and the body 300 years to turn to bones, decay happens quickly depending where you live, if you live in Arizona the dry heat will preserve you for 50 more additional years vs Florida where the heat and moisture decay comes within 3 months.Also if you cremate then when Jesus blows the whistle there is no body to go to him.

Sister in law passed away. The burial package that was chosen included the casket, the services at the funeral home, sign-in book, In Memory cards with her picture on them, an article in the paper...you know, the run of the mill things which came to right around 13,000. The thing that pissed me off is that included in this package was a coupon for a dinner that fed up to 10-15 people If I remember correctly. The dinner was supplied by a local family run restaurant. When I told the director we didn't want that option, he stated that if we omitted it, the package was only $20.00 cheaper. I do not understand that logic! They are forcing you to purchase a meal that cost approximately $300.00 Who are they to make that decision for us? What a rip off!! I won't tell you the name of the funeral home, but it's a well known and well established business in Montevallo, Alabama.

@brianhaflin97993 жыл бұрын
Part of the problem is that many costs are out of the funeral home control. Many people don't realize that you could easily spend $10,000 alone on obituaries costs, funeral service costs for clergy and musicians, cemeteries costs, and even repasts or luncheons afterwards . Many have the idea of the traditional viewing, service, and than burial concept but don't realize that each aspect has their own price tags that go along with it. People don't realize the small things such as staff costs and transportation costs either. I had the opportunity to talk with a funeral director a few years ago about his experiences and he says many family's are very unaware of what they want and need to be prompted though the process such as "What color casket are you thinking?" or "Do you want to do prayer cards?" or even "Do you want a service for your loved one". It ain't really pushing people to buy stuff but many people need to be pushed though the process in their time of need also to get the funeral arrangements done.

yes that's what they do. When you go with your relatives tell them they DO NOT need a 20,000.casket a 12,000. 00 one will do, they do not need prayer cards, no need for 2 viewing one will do and if its cremation. do not let them up charge you for a borrow casket, put them into a paper box casket for viewing cause that is the one they are going to burn her or his body in. they charge for the makeup 250.00 hair 300.00 for the style, etc... its all about how can we screw uncle louie and his wife aunt mary. out of their childrens inheritance. You don't need more than 4 lines of the newspaper the more lines you use its 100.00 per extra per line. not by word. so when you see a long list in newspaper of the mans life cycle his family is paying up to $10,000.00 for that article in the newspaper. or more. If you want your relative to be totally dressed bring the clothing. including shoes. my dads feet were so swollen they could not put his shoes on him, so they went inside coffin. also take off rings necklaces that of value, even if you see it when they close the grave, they find a way to remove it before you know it, also here is something else. When your family member dies in the hospital make sure the funeral home picks them up fast, cause what I have seen will make you vomit. I have seen many body parts removed from the families when they come to us. Some womans legs were taken off her for stolen body parts its a market of selling bones and body parts. Remember that man Mastromarino, he is dead now but he sold his mothers legs for 10,000.00 for one leg and made money off of her and others. so get them to the funeral home quickly. IF you wanted to see them being dressed or you want to dress them all you need to do is ask, we will allow you to dress them too.

When my father passed away, we had an outstanding funeral home . No pressure and always let my mother be in charge of the spending and the planning. They did an amazing job with the service as well. It was expensive, but we had over 360 guest come through. We had to make sure dad was put away nicely and the way he would have wanted. They left my siblings and mother alone in the picking out the casket and extras. No sales pressure. We are from Enterprise Al and the name of the funeral home was Sercey.

You are right but you see the lawyers and judges do backroom deals to prevent the exposure of this massive fraud. As a matter of fact the court room judges Chiappieta and Pattillo participated in a fraud against my late mother and I to seize the estate. Both of these judges are at the probate court Toronto feasting off the estate. All of the estates are being milked by lawyers and the judges. My late mother's scam started at the Cardinal funeral home.

It's getting just as bad in England, I'm sad to say. A friend of mine's husband asked at the funeral home, when she died, for a wicker coffin - as that had been her wish. There was a sharp intake of breath and he was told, "Well wicker coffins are very much the top end of the range, Sir ..." Oh come on - you can only get away with telling lies like that to someone who is very recently widowed, hence still very shocked and confused! Show me a 'struggling' funeral director - all the ones I know are rolling in it!

Price Funeral Home in the Sacramento area in CA never pulled any of these things on me. I have watched a number of these exposes, and that funeral home never pushed me to upgrade. I told them flat out I was low income and they gave me a very nice funeral and casket all within my budget. This was 15 years ago. Unless they have changed hands and things have changed, I would recommend them.

A year and a half ago I lost my father and the local funeral home stole thousands compliments of this grieving heart of mine.

When My Father died in 81. Our family went through that carp. Went to the home and this Director was handing out the pitch and guilt. I told him my mother hadn't lived with him for years. I hadn't spoke to him in years. He had no insurance. No money. Since I thought he was somewhat a jerk in life; I didn't care if he put the body out with next weeks trash. Whole sales pitch charged. When My Mother passed. I had a much reasonable Director. I got much older and really sorry what went on with my Father. My wish when my time come...CREMATION. I don't care what they do with the ashes. I'll be dead.

Go to your local memorial society. Chances are they will have the services you want at a huge savings from what most funeral directors want to charge. My parents and I have lived in the Pacific Northwest and we were and are members of Peoples Memorial Association of Seattle. Both of my parents were cremated, as per their wishes, and the cremations were both about 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of what "commercial" funeral homes were charging. I know that funeral homes many times are a ripoff because I worked for one for three years - I was the night attendant who lived in the apartment at the funeral home and called the funeral directors when a call came in after they had closed. The funeral home's owner's biggest brag was that he could take a family who wanted a simple cremation and upsell them to a full funeral - a jump from $2,000 to nearly $6,000 or more. I also checked out the training needed to be a funeral director. At a big school in California it was 49 college credits to get a funeral director's license - 6 credits of embalming, cosmetology, etc. and 43 credits of "business management," most of which was actually salesmanship!

The biggest thing with cremation services is yes they are cheaper but most are just a building inside a strio mall. They dont ever even handle the deceased. They do not have a chapel. Therefore if you want to have a traditional funeral service you still have to use a real funeral home. But yes a cremation soceity is much cheaper. And in reguards to schooling. There is alot more to it than what you mentioned. Alot of anatomy, legal, religious studies. For every religion there is......also 4000 hours of an internship (atleast in virginia) as well as containing education of i think its 8 hours per year after you get your lisc to keep you up to date on new laws
@robertm20005 жыл бұрын
@@bobstone1746 No, you DON'T have to use a funeral home for a "traditional funeral!" I've belonged for many years to churches that would gladly host a full funeral service for one of their members, the relative of a family member, or even someone who would basically ask the church to do a funeral service for someone that was not a member of the church. There would be no set fee for this - simply any offering would be accepted. My father was a pastor of a church that did funerals for indigent folks. He always saw to it that the person received a fitting and dignified service. I also do not recall ANY state that has a "religious education requirement" for a person to be a funeral director. Yes, there are some legal requirements for things you have to know to be a funeral director. But NOWHERE near the number of requirements that you have to fulfill to be, say, a doctor or a minster. "Funeral service" is a BUSINESS. And the basics for that are fairly easily taught, as are the procedures for basic embalming. I support the availability of a choice of basic funeral procedures that are chosen by the families of the deceased - not a whole list of actually unnecessary things that are dangled in front of a "consumer" and that are layered with all sorts of sales practices disguised as "compassion" for the purchasers!
@bobstone17465 жыл бұрын
Ok yes you could have services at a church and use a cremation soceity. I beleive they run about 800 here However there is ALOT or religous material that is covoerd to obtain your bachelors degree for mortuary science aka funeral director. One thing that i notice alot here in the comments is debate about embalming. Jews do not embalm. So it would violate their religous rights to tell them they have to embalm as well as violate the law. Every religion has alot of practices that must be respected to perform a funeral service properly and they are all different.
@robertm20005 жыл бұрын
@@bobstone1746 I do agree that there are religious practices that a person would have to know about in order to do a proper funeral service for someone of a particular denomination or religious affiliation. But as far as I know, there is no actual requirement in any state to be licensed to practice any specific religion to be a funeral director, mortician, or embalmer. Of course the potential clients of the funeral home may have specific requirements of the religion they follow. But those are personal preferences, and ultimately addressed in the commercial side of the business. In mortuary schools there will be courses in specific religious practices that funeral providers must comply with to serve particular religious groups. But that specific type of course is not required by state law in any state. And in fact, in most states it is only an associate's degree that is actually required for a funeral director's license.

A "little voice" told me to go to another funeral home, where some of my family members were viewed in the past. There they offered me the same exact package for $4,000.- I believe some funeral homes take advantage of people who are distraught, and grieving. My advice is to "shop around" before making final arrangements for your loved ones.

My grand and great grandmothers are buried there, it made for an easy choice to work there. Every funeral home isn't crooked.
