Jim Browning is the man. This is personal for me because it happened to my mom last Christmas. Ironically, I got the phone call about what happened while watching Jim Brownings channel, but unfortunately it was too late. I have nothing but praise for the people who try to stop, expose and help these victims.

I work with people with dementia so I screen a lot of scam calls it's shocking how once they realise someone is vulnerable they won't let up. Even if 95% of the calls get a angry carer they still won't let up wasting there time is the only way to reduce the calls.

I am glad about the CBC Marketplace trying to stop scammers and educating Canadians, but at the same time victims need to be told to turn off their computer in case the scammer is connected to their computer as well as to call their bank and CC just in case. Why? Because even if they did not send money, as long as they had logged into their online bank while the scammers have been connected to their computer, they install keyloggers and could easily make new CC in the victim's name and details.

The guy had recently became a permanent resident(less than a year) and got a call that he owed like 10k in taxes and he had to pay up or be deported. I ended up speaking to the guy and calming him down and clearing up the problem but he was so terrified. I felt so bad for him

Ya, what people do not know is that people who are new to the country come from countries where this type of thing might actually happen from government, so they don't know what it legit or not where. They are easily victimized, and part of the immigration integration does not teach them to recognize scams. I have family from Iran that came to Canada, so I know how easily they may fall for this because of the difference in culture.

He told them he didn’t know how to access our bank account right then but could they call back in an hour when I got home. They started yelling at him and telling him he had to stay on the phone with them until I got home or they would send the police because he was trying to flee. I have worked on several stories like this, and they are always heartbreaking. Most will not admit to what has happened until it's basically too late, so the "shame" of being duped prevents the victims from moving on and the police from finding the perpetrators - or even open a case. Besides the financial ruin, these victims feel a loss of personal security that it can take years to recover from. They feel that they let their family and children down, as they often have to change lifestyle. Inheritances, money for their kids or grandchildrens education, all gone. They have no reason to feel shame though, they have been conned by people who *really* knows what they are doing. I know of CEO's, doctor's, politicians, you name it, they've been conned too, so it's about time that the shame is placed where it belongs, with the criminals, not the victims. Whenever you see a senior citizen having to work for a living, chances are... so at least give them a smile. 👍😉

I feel so sorry for the elders that aren’t aware of the types of scams going on, heck I’m 27 and consider myself “tech savvy” and almost fell for a very sneaky scam myself. My coworker ended up falling for the scam and told me about it, and I felt like he opened my eyes to the fact that this can happen to anyone. Now, I never give info over the phone if I don’t have to and if I can physically go into stores to get help for anything that’s what I do, that way you know you’re giving your secure info to people that aren’t out to steal your identity.

Considering the demographics of the victims of these types of scams, there ought to be sentences which are as severe as is possible. And, where the names of the perps are to be publicly listed for potential employers and for the general public to be mindful of. The aforementioned severe sentencing, e.g., a minimum of 10 years jail time and fines which include paying back their victims, is not as a deterrent for others. It is to lessen their reach as people without ethics/compassion will reoffend and prey upon the elderly and other vulnerable groups at the moment that they are free to. ⚖
