I have always been opposed to negative ads. Instead of trying to make everyone else look bad why not say what you would do right and stand behind your platform?

Cut off the best line, though, of Chrétien's remarks, "It's true, that I speak on one side of my mouth. I'm not a Tory, I don't speak on both sides of my mouth."

I’m an American who loves Canadian politics and I am certain that if the negative ad against Jean in 1993 had never been aired, the Liberal Party would have only achieved a minority government.

In 1993 Kim Campbell went from Prime Minister, to unemployed. Her party went from majority status to TWO seats, in Parliament. Some say that attack ad hurt the Progressive Conservative Party.

Get a history book about politics in Canada since confederation. Negative advertising has always been there. And yes some of it was even worse.

The "first past the post" plurality electoral system guarantees negative campaigns. With multiple parties, especially, a suppressed vote not cast for your chief rival is effective, but selling people on positive ideas may well send them to another party which is making a similar (but better) promise.

4:40 This is why timing is important when it comes to attack ads. The 1988 campaign was proof-positive. The PCs had the lead in the polls, lost the lead in the debate but then went in on Turner more specifically with a few weeks to go. Enough time to regain the lead and not enough time for the Liberals to re-swing the tide. The 2015 Conservative campaign was a clear e.g. of organizational fatigue. They'd beat the drum of individualized leader attack ads from 2007 onward (from Dion to Iggy to Trudeau) and when it stopped working the way they were used to it working, they resorted to some attempts that seemed pretty desperate to an undecided voter in the waning weeks.

Im so glad political ads like these are all but banned in the UK. Obviously the public need some way of getting to know the candidates, but it's far more informative for them to learn about them from debates and their manifesto. Constant dung slinging and election fatigue will only discourage voters, exacerbate political polarization and hinder civilised discourse.

Hurricane after hurricane slams in to the USA. BILLIONS and BILLIONS dollars of damage. ALL CAUSED BY JUSTIN TRUDEAU for his failure to meet the Paris accord carbon reduction levels. It has come to our attention the USA is going to SUE Canada for all of the damage caused by Justin's failure to meet the CLIMATE CHANGE reductions Trudeau’s increased regulations and the carbon tax are pushing jobs and investment out of Canada and into the United States, while ripping money out of the pockets of taxpayers. And yet, the US is reducing emissions without a carbon tax and while reducing regulations. So now the USA will ask for all of the CARBON TAX money Justin has collected. www.spencerfernando.com/2018/07/17/paris-accord-fail-in-2017-co2-emissions-fell-in-the-us-while-surging-nearly-20-million-tons-in-canada/
