Rare simulator reveals if Key Bridge collapse could have been prevented

The design of that bridge was too vulnerable to a crash like this with those delicate "A" pillars at a height that could be struck by the bow of a ship that big. There should have been HUGE concrete barriers in the water around those footings to prevent a ship's bow from being able to hit those pillars. With enough of a barrier, the ship would have been pushed off to the side, instead of taking out the supports. They could have put $2,000,000 worth of concrete around each support footing, instead of paying billions to rebuild this mess.

If they put in proper barriers in the first place.

The collision could have been prevented by having compulsory tugs manoeuvre vessels whilst transiting under the bridge

speculation and whataboutism. What happened to just reporting the factual news. This does not need to be story hour about what may have happened, the entire purpose of your JOB is to REPORT FACTUAL NEWS. Bring back journalism, fire the bloggers.

Whataboutism is how changes are made. They factually reported on simulations.

This simulation is an accurate assessment. These ships cannot operate their main propulsion without electric power. Once the main propulsion diesels shut down after a power failure, it would require far more than the time available before striking the bridge to initiate a restart. End of story.

The fact there were only 2 dolphins protecting the bridge shows how poor the construction was

@@billiamc1969 While the bridge itself may have been built to spec, not protecting it was rather like shopping around for the cheapest possible insurance. If one gets in a wreck, will that company pay on the claim?

Which is exactly why they NEVER should have been operating WITHOUT TUGS!

Dropping the port anchor didn't help. Pulled the bow directly into the the supports.

You need to get them to run the simulation of 2 large tugs stopping the Dali again. Even smaller tugs would have been able to provide directional control and have the MV Dali pass under the bridge. However, this would not have mattered in any case as no tugs were tied into the Dali when the engine failed about 1-kiloretre from the bridge.

Well, THAT’S THE PROBLEM!!!

Trying their best to take blame away from the crew. Just blame the bridge, If the bridge wasn't there, it wouldn't have happened.

The Port of Balitimore did have 2 tugs put Dali into the federal channel and then the harbor pilots took command. The harbor pilots also notified others there were problems = were able to close the bridge down to traffic.

Why have the authorities not had a deeper channel dredged that would also give a second channel to use after everything is cleared by now?
@TomaszWawruszko-777
@TomaszWawruszko-777 21 күн бұрын
It is easy to say "deeper channel". There is like 25 meters of water, so basicly it is deep channel, but such depth is only in central, narrow part.

It does seem that the ship was going too fast for the narrow channel and the time of day.

Yes it could of been avoided, HOW? Building a tunnel. Bridge should of NEVER been built there. For these idiots to rebuild another bridge is insane. No reason for it in that spot for that much traffic going in and out of a port. Let alone they made it CHEAP, no protection from what just happened. Tunnel, no issues, worst scenario for a ship without a bridge, grounding. If the citizens were smart they would demand a tunnel for that area.
@farmerthatflies
@farmerthatflies 21 күн бұрын
It has to be another bridge. A tunnel won’t work for the simple fact that hazardous materials (on semis) are never allowed in a tunnel. And a lot cross there every day
